I am really happy that the movie is PG-13. I think that it is a genious marketing idea because now people wont see it as a kid movie and think of it as more of a serious sci fi movie.

its not a marketing idea scooter... its a RATING... not a commercial. A guide for parents on what is and isnt appropriate for their children.

geez some people get way too into things.

i think its great, but to call it a marketing idea makes me wanna slap my head on a brick wall. :chewbacca:

Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and some serious shit.

Oh yeah, and has James Earl Jones been confirmed to voice Vader? Maybe I missed it with all the crap hitting these few days.

Because I think that they actually are crazy enough to just modify Hayden's voice so it sounds like a younger JEJ, which would be gay.

The way I picture the immolation scene with Anakin screaming in pain for mercy as the flesh burns off his body is enough to get a PG-13 Rating in my book.

Why woulddn't he? He recorded new stuff for the ESB dvd...why wouldn't he just do Ep 3 all at the same time? He even recorded new dialogue for a freakin toy, why not the last Star Wars film ever?

For those elsewhere - adding the A to a 12 rating basically meant it was up to the parents to decide. Given that most parents in the UK are almost entirely selfish and irresponsible, it basically meant that the rating is irrelevant.

*sigh* Not strictly true - the parents have to accompany the under 12, and watch the movie with them (giving the power to veto the movie at any point if they feel it is unacceptable).

Oh, and on behalf of responsible British parents, I'd like to say "sod off". ;)

HA ha, of course I was making sweeping generalisms and being flippant. I'm sure you're, like most people, are responsible.

Let's be honest though - there are a 'sizeable minority' of parents who go to the cinema with children who clearly shouldn't be watching the film (rather than getting baby sitters).

I've had film experiences spoiled by young children in 12As, and I stand by my opinion that for the 'A' makes the rating pointless. To give you an example, I had to bear a 6-7 year old (for a guess) asking throughout the film what the fuck was going on (not an exact quote!). Can't remember which film it was, but it goes without saying that it was a 'fairly adult' film that needed that certificate to make more money.

Haha! I see your point, but the rating of a film does not dictate what age it's aimed at - just the age under which it would be deemed 'inappropriate'. To make myself clear, taking a 9 or 10 year old to see Spider-Man seems wholly appropriate, unless they are a very sensitive child. However, taking a young child to see, say, Citizen Kane (which is rated "U") there would be a whole heap of "what the fuck's going on" for most children (expletives aside - it just made me laugh). A PG or U rating just says a child won't seen anything inappropriate, not that they will have a clue what's going on. Hell, I'm 30 (nearly), and most 99% of 18 rated movies are just fodder for the mind, and yet the "12" rated 'The Others' scared the bejesus out of me.

I'm soft like that.

I agree with the concept, but feel that not all parents think about it that sensibly. But anyway, I'm not going to moan about parent's attitude to what their children can or cannot see (fuck all to do with me).... it's more that the same parents cannot/do not control their kids either, thus spoiling other people's enjoyment.

To me it's no coincedence that the number of annoying little fuckers has increased since 12A came along.

PS Yes, the Others scared the bejesus out of me also :mrgreen:

His voice is in the film, but no one is going to “officially” admit this fact. JEJ did not receive a credit in ANH. In keeping with this tradition, he has not received a credit for ROTS. ;)

In regard to the American rating system, I found an decent article on the history of the MPAA (link). Of interesting note:
Quote:
if a film uses "one of the harsher sexually-derived words" (such as fuck) once, it remains eligible for a PG-13 rating, provided that the word is used as an expletive and not in a sexual context; However, some words will automatically garner an R rating, such as motherfucker or cunt.
Quote:
if such language is used more than once, or once if in a sexual context, it usually receives an R rating;
Quote:
a reference to drugs usually gets a movie a PG-13 at a minimum, though a few movies were rated PG for mild drug references;

Here is another breakdown of what is permitted under PG-13: (link):
Quote:
A film like this may have more cussing than a PG (Shit, SOB, maybe 1 or 2 uses of the word fuck) stronger violence than a PG (but usually with very little blood), sexual situations (maybe 2 people rolling around in a bed but a sheet covering the "good stuff") or brief nudity (a quick boob or butt shot that does not occur during sex.)

So, it appears that with PG-13, GL has room to add a couple of “fuck’s,” an overt drug reference (no need for “death sticks"), a somewhat tame sex scene, and limited nonsexual nudity.

:mfyd:

If anyone cares, the PG-13 rating is now "official". You can look it up on mpaa.org.
