Download SITH Fast and Free! An Idiot's Guide To Newsgroups

http://www.newzbot.com

First off, you want to download the Xnews News Reader. HERE YOU GO CLICK HERE

Select "Download Now", unzip it and click on "Xnews.exe"
Image

This next part could be tricky and I'll let some other site explain it better than I can:
Most ISP's maintain a news server that they allow their subscribers to access. Some are very good servers carrying most newsgroups and have high completion rates. Completion is simply the percentage of messages that make it to the server (low completion means a server is missing a lot of messages making downloading very difficult). The problem is that many ISP's neglect their news server and therefore have low completion rates. There are, however, many ISP's that have servers running that are fast and have high completion rates. The only way to know is to find out what the address of your ISP's news server is and try it out!

A news server may require you to log into it using a user name and password. Usually the news servers run by ISP's do not require you to log on using a user name and password because they assign you your IP address (your unique internet location address) and the server automatically accepts only those IPs it recognizes. However, this also means that you will not be able to access the news server from another internet connection. You would have to be using theirs.

To find out if your ISP has a news server and to find the IP address go to the customer support section of their website and search for news server. If their website doesn't help, give them a call and ask whether they have a news server and what the address is. Bargain ISP's (such as Netzero and Juno) do not maintain news servers. Even some major ISPs such as America Online (AOL) currently do not offer Newsgroup access.

FIND OUT YOUR ISP NEWSGROUP SERVER ADDRESS: http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm

So you will need to find out the newsgroup server your ISP uses (for example: news-server.san.rr.com) and enter it here:
Image

Select a nickname (pick anything it doesn't matter)
Image

If your newsserver needs a username/pass enter it here. If not, click okay.
Image

Select NO
Image

Right click the huge white box and select "Add Group Manually"
Image

A dialog box will prompt you to enter a newsgroup. As of June 4th, alt.binaries.dvdrcore has the Star.Wars.Episode.III.Revenge.of.the.Sith.INTERNAL.DVDRip.XviD release.

Note: alt.binaries.dvdr may not have ROTS, Click this link for a good place to find Newsgroups that do have Revenge of the Sith
Image

Next, you're (likely) to get a popup asking you to set how many headers you want to download. Select "Set Filter" at the bottom.

(If no popup comes up, don't worry, just wait for the headers to load, and scroll through them looking for ROTS)
Image

In the left "Subject" box type in something applicable to filter by like "Sith" or "Wars". Now click "Okay". Click "Okay" again on the previous headers prompt.
http://devaluate.com/xnews/xnews9a.gif

The red bar at the bottom right corner will indicate that it's downloading. Depending on how many headers it requires to download, it could take anywhere from 10 seconds to a 10 minutes.
Image

If all went as planned, you will see a list of .Rar files for ROTS. Highlight the relevant Rars starting by holding the SHIFT button and clicking the first and then last .Rar They files may not look exactly like what I've shown below, because there are many releases. You only want the files that end in .Rar like part01.rar or .r01

Note: The blue cubes on the left of the files indicates that it's a complete post.

Image

See that light blue Rubix Cube near the bottom? Click it.
Image

Lastly you'll be prompted to save. Choose a nice little folder to save in for later.
http://devaluate.com/xnews/xnews9d.gif

Sit back and wait a couple hours and you're done. I hope that wasn't too hard was it?

[hr]

:siren: HOW TO OPEN .RAR FILES
The download is 100% complete you say? Great!

Now, find the area of your hard drive that you saved it to in the first place.

Inside will be a collection of wacky files ending in .r01 or part01.rar, etc

These are Rar files and you need Winrar to open them.

You can download Winrar from their website right here: http://rarlab.com/rar/wrar342.exe

Install Winrar, then double click one of these files (.r01 or .rar whatever). After a little waiting Winrar will open. Choose the option "Extract files" and select where on your hard drive you want to put Revenge of the Sith.

Wait a few minutes to extract and you are done!

[hr]

:siren: HOW TO PLAY .ISO FILES

Alright so you downloaded an a file ending in ".iso" and you can't play it?

Download Daemon Tools from here:

http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/ ... load&id=34

Install it, then right click the "Lightning Icon" in your taskbar > Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > No Media > Mount Image

Image

Select the ROTS iso, play it in your Media Player like you would a CD/DVD and enjoy!

Dammit it was in dvdr? All this time I've been looking in the svcd, vcd, divx, and movie binaries. Thanks for the info.

If any of you would like to try and different newsreader you should go with NewsBin or Newsleecher, personally I though Xnews was crap but whatever floats your boat :) .

Faid, just a heads up. You might want to remove the second link you posted entitled: "Nfonews". The page has a browser hijacker on it.

Faid, okay I got this far, now how do you know the queue length (the people ahead of you for the file you want). Is that represented by the
"Lines" column?

Do you just queue the folder with the file in it that you want and wait for a confirmation box to pop up to confirm download?

Yeah see, I picked alt.binaries.dvdr first, and found out later that it wasn't there anymore. So the screenshot I took of the files was actually from alt.binaries.warez.quebec-hackers

Lots of sources here: http://www.newzbin.com/search/query/p/?q=sith&Category=6&searchFP=p

Okay, i'm in alt.binaries.dvdr (you can tell from the pic i posted)
Now, how does one go about downloading one of the files you see in the pic? Is that just info on the file and I have to go somewhere else?

I know how to d/l on IRC, but this is Greek to me. Please help.

Yeah unfortunately Star Wars isn't on that alt.binaries.dvdr anymore.

The files you will need will end in ".rar" or ".r**" and are more than 30 lines each.

ROTS was posted has been posted recently on alt.binaries.triballs and alt.binaries.movies.divx

There's a really nice divx copy on alt.binaries.movies.divx under the title "[5T4R W4R5 -3PI50D3 III] -Screener-widescreen- swe3"

Even alt.binaries.starwars has a version of ROTS right now.

Ah, man, Faid, thanks for reopening my eyes to newsgroups and the joy of their speed again. It's been years since I've used Usenet, and it was mostly for *ahem* other things (read: pr0n ;) )

Anyway, the alt.binaries.warez.quebec-hackers is where I find it, seems to be working very good.

Back when I was using Usenet, I used OE to read the groups, so I was really discouraged with how long it took.

I didn't get one either. I just searched for "Sith" next to the "S" at the bottom of the window.

I don' think I did this right. I'm decoding(downloading?) all the blue boxes I found, but I don't think I'm getting the whole thing. There are three .rar files and the rest, I don't know, they're called sw3.scr-visa.vol127+128.par2 and stuff like that. I don't know if I'm doing any of this correctly.

Well, it was there this morning (alt.binaries.dvdr). So far the guy had about 67 files uploaded. He said the total file was over 3 gigs. I think the guys name is Cody or something (I'm not at home to check).

Also, there is another posted with VISA-FIXED at the end.

When I manually add a workgroup, I do not get a popup asking me to download headers; instead I get "ERROR 480 authentication required".

If you didn't get a prompt, just wait for it to load the headers, then scroll through looking for ROTS.

It won't load any headers. Nothing happens, only the authentication error

Is the quality OK?

Since it cannot be a DVD-backup I guess it's pretty poor isn't it?

Thanks so much. The guide was very well done! I've been wanting to experiment some with newsgroups. But I do believe that I will have to pay for usenet access if this is to every pay off for me. My ISP's newsgroup server sucks. 70% of the posts for the movie files are incomplete. :(

Out of the 80 or so rar files that are listed on the usenet server, maybe 10 are complete. :(

Just in case this may help someone else, I discovered what the problem was with the server I was using... apparently it was timing out before it finished reading all the headers. Through trial and error, I basically discovered that out of the three possible servers my ISP provided, the one I am "supposed" to use is problematic. The other 2 are GREAT!! But I can still access the GREAT ones! :chewbacca:

So if you are having trouble with incomplete files, check to see if your isp has more than one newsgroup server. If so, try the other servers and see if the results aren't signifigantly better.

Now I am happily downloading. :) Thanks again for the guide Faid. You got me started on Usenet!

I have no idea what is wrong. Try connecting to a different usenet server. You might have to pay for usenet access somewhere. :\

Followed everything up to the newsgroups entering and when I type in the newsgroups and open them up nothing appears. I tried with like six different news groups and none of them show anything.

I just need a newsgroup that has sith on it. All the ones I try don't have it, just other movies such as House of Wax(like I'd waste my time downloading that garbage). I've tried groups such as alt.binaries.dvdr, alt.binaries.dvd, alt.binaries.svcd, etc without success. Someone help a fellow fan out?

ISP's often don't have every newsgroup there is available. Wait for it to hit one of the more popular groups most likely later tonight.

Hey Faid, just wondering if you know how to preview the video in a set of spanning rar files like you find on usenet. Someone commented on that ability in the DVDRip thread. I've been searching for an answer to this. Thanks. ;)

With MPC (MediaPlayerClassic) one can actually watch the video when previewing.

If you have, say the first 12 parts of a spanning rar archive, try to extract the file using WinRAR, it will start working until it encounters the first missing part of the spanning archive. Then it will pop up an error screen. Don't do anything to that screen.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and close out WinRAR. It will leave an uncompleted (corrupted) avi file that is the full file size, but only playable for the first 12 parts. Open the avi file with media player classic. MPC will buffer the avi like a streaming file and allow you to preview it.

Not the preferred way to do this, but it works. :chewbacca:

This is probably a stupid question, but after loading all the headers, I found that all of the files were missing parts. They were all listed as 58/61 or 59/61. What should I do? I assume that if I decoded them I would have incomplete files, can I search again to find the other pieces?

Thanks for the help.

Yeah if you have like only a few of the rars that are incomplete then you can repair them later, but if each rar is incomplete I'd recommend against it.

Try alt.binaries.ftn , the dvdrip was posted there about 10 hours ago.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Another question before I go much further. I assume when the files are decoded and decompressed that I'll end up with a couple of .iso files. Since I don't have a DVD burner I was planning to mount them to Daemon and view them from the computer. Possible?

You could mount them with Daemon if they were Iso files but they are actually .avi files encoded with Xvid.

Okay, I admit it, I'm stupid. Every time I search the newsgroups for the movie, I can't find a complete copy. Not even close. So, with that in mind, using Xnews, is there a way to research the newsgroup? Is it common for most of the files to be missing parts?

Unfortunately I'm only running a 256K internet connection so the process is time consuming. I really want this to work, but it's getting frustrating. Thanks again for your input.

Your BitTorrent and Newsgroups guides have been very helpful and informative.
