Thank you guys so much.

One of the most exciting moments in researching it for me was figuring out the source of the phrase "the Force." (No spoilers please -- people should read the history in context or it doesn't make much sense.) At the moment when I found it, my eyes actually teared up -- like finding a little treasure that George had buried on a distant planet decades ago.

heh thats great :)

I can only imagine how cool that must of been.

The article is (as I said before) is really great. Its motivated me to try and hunt the magazine down and fork over the cash despite already reading it for free online. That says a lot. Especially considering what a cheap bastard I can be sometimes lol.

force 2187,
love the name, dude. Great article. We have the same first names, so what I may never do, which is hang out with George Lucas and interview him, a certain Steve DID get to do and I'm very happy for you constructing such a great piece. I think your article wil go down as one of the all time great GL interviews for sure. I remember when he did a story for WIRED in 1999 right before TPM and that one was very cool also.
Much "nicer" cover photo though. The Vader thing is a bit brutal, but if he okay'd it, I guess it's alright. The man did say he had become like Vader in some respects. Again, great job. If you ever want to do a story on a fledgling inner city digital filmmaker for your mag, hit me up at dougdigitalpro@aol.com. I just finished a digital feature outta Detroit! :)

I still have the first Wired article from '99 on my shelf somewhere.. I kind of dislike how it has changed from how amazing Lucas' technology is and what an innovater he is, which was the popular angle in '99, to how he's too obsessed with technology and he needs to learn to be an innovater again.. really kind of predicatble., especially for a tech magazine. However, I have to admit this current piece was very well written, and about 1000 times more well researched than your average GL piece, so... everybody is entitled to their opinion, of course, and it's awesome to see a Star Wars article that actually has some work put into it.

Just picked it up today! I love the cover. George has created his own wonderful piece of pop culture in Darth Vader and I hope he knows how much we SW fans appreciate it. Very fitting.

Well, THIS is very cool: the film by Arthur Lipsett that so deeply affected Lucas and was the source of "the Force," 21-87, has been out of print for at least 30 years, but the National Film Board of Canada told me today that they would make it available as a DVD on demand. Unfortunately, their website doesn't list it, but the DVD can be ordered by calling the following numbers:

1-800-542-2164 (US)
1-800 267-7710 (Canada)

It's a really beautiful, haunting, weird short film.

I don’t feel that I know anymore about Lucas’s political stances from that article. He was just stating facts about the F911’s affects on the film industry in regards to documentaries, as Fatboy said.

Unless he has shifted recently, he seems to be centrist anyways. So neither fuckin’ side can claim shit. They can both hate him equally.

Bloggers.

Found another interesting Lucas and 21-87 connection news story...

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/features/starwars/

Kinda sad that a filmmaker whose influence continues to push the envelope committed suicide before he was 50. The carnival horse scene could easily have been 'borrowed' by Gus Van Sant for Elephant. Another sad movie, but very expressive of what it portrays.

BTW, I loved the article, Steve!
