Heh, it's pretty amazing what us spoiler hounds can get our hands on. :)

That said, I won't be reading those (just as I haven't read any of the MF spoiler reports in the last few months). There's a point of no return that I just don't want to cross with this final film. I crossed that point with AOTC and felt letdown by the movie not so much for what it was, but for what I knew it COULD have been. I don't want that to happen this time.

Have fun reading. :)

Yeah - cheers, Eye_H8_U, but I guess those two pages were never up in the first place... It seems they were just a duplicate of the previous pages.

"It doesn't......hurt."

Damn, I can see the look on his face now.....reminds me of something in Saving Private Ryan, where the kid is trying to put his guts back in his body, so overcome with shock that he doesn't fully understand the seriousness of his situation.

Any scans of the Jedi Temple assault? If I read the pages right it went straight from Anakin entering the Temple to Bail Organa walking in on perhaps the middle of the assault. This leads me to believe we don't see Anakin kill anyone except in hologram presentation.

For those who are so inclined - here are the three chapters of the novelization we have so far as CDisplay files...

17 - The Face of the Dark

18 - Order 66

21 - A New Jedi Order

And while we are at it - here is the first issue of the comic adaptation in the same format:

ROTS issue #1

awesome stuff. We can only hope that the stuff that George gave to Matt Stover verbally will be as good visually on screen. The apparent speed of the Mace/Sid duel might seem confusing on screen if not edited right.

Too late.

Granted that this gives something of a dramatic effect, the fact remains that it is grammatically atrocious and written at a 7th/8th-grade level. Quite frankly, the writing style gets very old after about 6 pages. The content is excellent, but the delivery is exceptionally poor.

Maybe you should worry about your own grammer and "writing level" before you criticize others. BTW its not a master's thesis on Shakespeare's influence on the development of the novel, its a SW book.

Did he make any grammar errors? I'd like you to point one out. Because there aren't any. The book is certainly enjoyable, I don't think anybody is denying that, but the writing, if you know anything about writing, is most definitely crap. Also, he was being humble and offering his opinion and he didn't deserve stupid-ass snottiness. If you look around these pages, you'll notice that a large number of people who are gushing about how well-written it is are the type of people who think that Sidious and Yoda have a "dual".... :|

The "are you threatening me" line doesn't appear to be in the novel.

Sorry to be an asshole, but why don't you enlighten us on your expertise in writing. Since you claim to have such a knowledge, put your money where your mouth is. Take a page and rewrite it better. Show us how it should be done.

For what it's worth, I'm not claiming it's some brilliantly written piece of prose. But it was a very good read. I just for once would like to see someone put their money where their mouth is.

I wrote for my highschool and college newspapers, I've written movie reviews for several sources, I've had short stories published various places, and I'm at around the 400 page mark in what I hope will be about a 500 page novel. I suppose none of that proves that I can write, but it proves that some people seem to think so, and it proves I've certainly put some thought and time into the subject. Maybe I'll rewrite a page later.. I don't really feel a need to prove myself, though.. for one thing, no insult intended, but I don't really care what people here think of me.. and for another thing, you and I seem to actually be agreeing.. I admited that the novel was a fun read, I just said it certainly wasn't "well-written".. it's certainly not literature with a capital L by anybody's standards. The main point of my post wasn't to prove my vast knowledge of writing, it was just to defend the person who got all attacked just for daring to say that the prose was disjointed and simpleminded.. which it obviously is..

writing is art.

something can be written perfectly (by rules and standards) and be total garbage. while something else may not be written perfectly and still be "a good read." it's subjective.

i like to write disjointed sometimes myself, it emphasises the thought.
that is a stylistic decision not bad writing.

and because something doesn't fit into your professor or text book parameters doesn't make it worse than something grammatically perfect. and being a word-snob or grammar-nazi won't change it either.

There are some little things in the book that kind of make sense out of some of what I expected to be somewhat questionable parts of the story. Hopefully, these will come across well in the movie.

Some truly amazing stuff in there. At first I was a bit put off by Stover's prose, but it really works once you get used to it.

What got me the most was, of course, the description of Anakin's waking nightmare. I suspected we wouldn't see a self-assured, arrogant Vader in ROTS, but rather a broken man who is only now realizing the full extent of his folly. I hope his internal anguish comes through in the film, as well as Palpatine's lack of concern for his apprentice, and the agony he's going through.

Some other moments I hope will appear on the film unaltered:

Saesse Tin and Argen Kolar's deaths. "It doesn't... Hurt"... Wow. Played right, it could be a very Saving Private Ryan-like moment, as someone said earlier.

Bail witnessing that youngling's last stand, his brutal execution.

Cody's line. Priceless.

Obi-Wan's paternal instincts being awakened by baby Luke, and his fond memory of Anakin, even after all that happened.

This novel may have pumped me up more than the trailer itself, which already had me sky-high :heavymetal:

I wonder if we could get the scene where Obi-Wan and Yoda are watching the hologram of Anakin becoming a Sith. If Obi-Wan's reaction was that bad after finding out that most of the Jedi have been destroyed, then I would love to see his reaction to Anakin turning to the Dark Side.....

The story is gripping, emotional and excellently written. I say excellently written because, for all the bashers out there: there is no perfect style of writing.

Good writing is one which adapts to the needs of its audience and also conveys the tone of the story. Its first priority is to communicate clearly. This Stover does remarkably well: it recognises the fast-paced action through broken paragraphs; it also relates, in a similar fashion, the thought processes of all the main characters.

We know it is successful because no-one's confused - everything is made clear. The intentions, motivations, the visual descriptions. Everything.

btw unless your are some listless lawyer making a complex assertion "big paragraphs" do not equate to brain size, nor are they a sign of good writing. In fact they are the sure best bet to confuse an audience.

Thanks again for posting the scans. My confidence is high for RotS.

From what I've read so far, the writing is fine. I agree there are a few too many stretches in the Lightsaber-as-Metaphor department, but overall it seems ok.

Not horrible, but not Hemingway either.

But then again, I haven't read a Star Wars book since the late 70's...

In case anyone wants it, I resized all the scans of the novel to make it a little easier to read full screen, and I renamed all the pages so its easier to read them in order.

I zipped them all together for your downloading pleasure.

Enjoy! :chewbacca:

Hello everyone - glad you've enjoyed the novel scans so far. With any luck, I should be able to acquire scans for Chapters 19 and 20 later on tonight.

That means Yoda vs. Sidious and The Duel.

Keem 'em peeled.

Do you know if anyone has tried to OCR the scanned pages instead of retyping?

I've got a scanner at work that can do it; but, I don't know if it'll work with these scans.
