I can confirm that the name "Ben" will NOT be used in EpIII. It's origins will remain unknown for the Saga.

I thought that a "clone friend" was to say Ben before turning?

I like this. I don't need to hear Ben's name in Ep3 and it's the least of Obi-Wan's lies in ANH so it's no big deal. As has already been said, I like that at least one thing is saved for ANH.

The origin of "Ben" isn't that important anyway.

I for one, think this sucks and is stupid.

The line "I haven't gone by the name of obi-wan since, oh before you were born" no longer makes any sense, and I don't buy the argument that obi-wan is deceptive and doesn't tell luke the whole truth...

To me, it's just a very simple thing that could have been included to make that work, but now, it makes the name 'Ben' useless.

Oh well, deal with it.

Frankly, it's not THAT big of a deal. He lied, oh well. Keeps the whole thing about Obi-Wan VS Ben at the beggining of ANH a little more intruiging.

It doesn't really matter. Who will be seeing Kenobi at that stage, anyway? Padme, Anakin, Bail, Yoda... none of them would have called him "Ben" to begin with. He coudl still have adopted the alias (off-screen) but it never gets used for us to see.

As predicted, TFN Boards are in an uproar over this "plot hole". Apparently every little detail needs to be onscreen, or it's an oversight. I wonder why it doesn't bother them that we've never seen any of the characters shit on screen... isn't that a plot hole too?

Man I love that I found this place.

Yet again people are reacting without knowing the full story...perhaps someone mentions in the movie that perhaps he live under an assumed name on Tatooine, we just aren't told in the movie that it is Ben...that's left for Episode IV to reveal for those viewing it for the first time in order 1 to 6 !

Well it really doesn't matter one way or another. He's with people who know him as Obi-Wan when the twins are born. Unless there was a piece written in just before the birth where he demands nobody ever call him that again what he said to Luke was a lie, whether his new name is brought up or not. Even if something as trite as that was written in, it still wouldn't fit because it's clear from Guinness' delivery that he's just giving a round-about guess on the time and so it can't be such a key moment in the film or he would have been more certain.

It's really obvious that he took the name Ben when he hid out on Tatooine whther ever mentioned or not. Like I said, in the grand scheme of his lies to Luke, this is nothing. It's hardly a plot hole.

I don't get it. Did he change his name to hide from the clan or because Gerald couldn't pronounce the name 'Obi-Wan'?

'They're saying it's a plot hole because the name "Ben" isn't mentioned. '

Actually, it's just LQ__ who is Queen Leia, who bashes for attention.
And Melonchony who does likewise. Pay them no mind.

And no Ben? Okiedokie. It's not earthshattering, or super wonderful. It just is.
But if people need to bitch about something, I'm sure they can. But then again, if people also need to shove hamsters up their ass...

Should we also take the time to explain how securely a Gundark's ear is fastened to its head?

Who the fuck cares. Do we need everything spoon-fed to us? Plot details that leave a little room for the imagination are intriguing and fun.

I think the only valid point anyone can raise is why Yoda never changed his name... to something like Bling Bling.

"You must go to the Dagobah System. There you will find Bling Bling, the Jedi Master who instructed me."

Seriously though in Regards to Obi-Wan I see 2 scenarios:

1) Lucas gives the audience the benefit of the doubt in terms of knowing the reason why Obi-Wan changes his name to Ben. The Jedi are being hunted down and killed, do you need to know anything more?

2) Who's to say(Ternian or someone else?) that there isn't some dialogue at the end of ROTS that actually refers to the reason(not the origin) and yet doesn't explicitly mention Obi-Wan's new alias. Perhaps something like Yoda saying, "Your name you must change Obi-Wan or fucked you will be." "What about you, Master" Obi-Wan says. "Worry about that you do not. Hidden shall I remain." Obi-Wan responds, "I shall monitor Luke's progress and direct him to you when the time is right." "Hmmm..." Yoda nods. "What you gotta problem with that?" Obi-Wan retorts. "At all not me who I scratch whiff ballsack," Yoda responds. "That makes no fucking sense, Master" Obi-Wan says. "Make grits beyond sense I do, yes I do," Yoda responds. "Ok now you're just being ignorant, Yoda." Obi-Wan says. "Fuck you mean ignorant am I, Obi-Wan?" Yoda snarls. "Look I've had enough of you little green bullshit" Obi-Wan responds. "End this post I will. Pointless this discussion has become" Yoda says. "Fine" Obi-Wan says. "Fine" Yoda responds.

This is what I think will happen.

In ANH, Leia asks for help from Obi-Wan Kenobi. If Bail knew he was going by Ben at the end of Episode lll, I'm sure she would've addressed Obi-Wan as Ben instead.

The name change issue is also addressed in the HS Q&A at the OS. According to what is said there, we will learn the reason why he changes his name, but not why he chooses the one he does.

Could go either way, doesn't really matter. But it does raise the intriguing possibility that not only does R2 know where he's going at the beginning of ANH, but he could actually be leading Leia to Obi-Wan. Longshot, but it would be kinda cool.

Unless he wanted "Ben" to know exactly what the importance of the message was and who it was from, before he even got chance to see it.
Only a message marked "for the attention Obi-Wan Kenobi" and carried by a droid claiming to belong to "Obi-Wan" would be important enough for "Ben" to spring into action.

Only such a message could have come from those who knew him as Obi-Wan, Bail and the House of Organa.

IMO, "Ben" is explained by that very fact - it is a sign, or rather, it makes the use of the name "Obi-Wan" into a sign.
It does not need to be uttered onscreen in ROTS and we do not really need to know why Obi picked that particular name...

Really, what I wanna know is what the fuck happens to that mole on young Obi-Wan's forehead. Does it get burned off from his catching too many Tatooine rays, or what?

I know. It's stupid. Lucas really dropped the ball on that one. He should have added it digitally to the last dvd release. How is Obi-Wan even remotely believable? Unless maybe the Obi-Wan in ANH is an imposter and we're the missing mole is the clue. He's a clone of Palpatine with the reincarnated soul of Qui-Gon and Maul's eyes painted to look different.

He's 38 in ROTS.

Fight a war for 3 years and it'll age you.
