After Palpatine's kidnapping, he immediately returns to the Senate and announces the establishment of Regional Governors across the galaxy. However, this ia a move not welcomed by many Senators since the orders for the governors comes directly from Palpatine - not the Senate.

Two influential members of the Senate decide to act against the Chancellor. Senator Bail Organa and Senator Mon Mothma decide to pull together the Star Systems that are opposed to Palpatine's new dictatorship.

One influential senator that is mentioned is Senator Amidala of Naboo. However, Bail and Mon Mothma, and other senators, are unsure whether or not she is to be trusted. Her alignment with Palpatine's home planet of Naboo is a cause of concern to them.

They decide to have a meeting with Senator Amidala where Amidala discusses the move against the Chancellor. After a short while, Amidala agrees to join their cause.

Suddenly all heads turn as Commander Tagge's speech is cut short and the Grand Moff Tarkin, governor of the Imperial outland regions, enters. He is followed by his powerful ally, The Sith Lord, Darth Vader. All of the generals stand and bow before the thin, evil-looking governor as he takes his place at the head of the table. The Dark Lord stands behind him.

TARKIN
The Imperial Senate will no longer
be of any concern to us. I've
just received word that the Emperor
has dissolved the council permanently.
The last remnants of the Old Republic
have been swept away.

TAGGE
That's impossible! How will the
Emperor maintain control without
the bureaucracy?

TARKIN
The regional governors now have
direct control over territories.
Fear will keep the local systems
in line. Fear of this battle station.

Can anyone tell me if Tarkin appears at this early juncture in the film? When Palps appoints the regional governors?


I'd love it if he did, because I've always loved Tarkin.

Am I the only one who is beginning to feel like maybe too many things are leading to the situation in ANH? I mean, with what we're hearing it feels like just a few days before Ep4 and, while Luke and Leia grew up, the rest of the Galaxy stood still and no time passed.

Nothing seems to be left for that (quite considerable) time gap.

In the time gap i guess the rebellion is carefully planning their actions, because of their leaders withnessing a lot of chaos and destruction, it can be compared to a modernday dictatorship it might take years to plan a first carefull counterstrike if you know what I mean.

Ofcourse there will be strikes against the Empire , maybe by the Mon Calamarians who haven't joined the Rebellion yet or some other races failing terribly, from which other cultures learn from those mistakes.

I think the Empire gaines a strong overpowering hand across the Galaxy, and lots of planets are even to scared to think of joining the Rebellion untill the Rebellion starts to make progress........

That might take a couple of years , Maybe....

The revelation that the Death Star would be in the new film made me feel just as you do. However, Tarkin says that "the Regional Governors now have direct control over their territories." That, to me, infers that they previously did not have direct control, but merely limited or "indirect" control. This could possibly be because of Senate "interference." With that, I can assume that the Regional Governors have been around for a while by the time ANH rolls around. Some spoilers have made me question both sides of the coin, but this one regarding the Regional Governors makes sense to me.

Not forgetting that it takes 20 years or so before Palpatine can REALLY dissolve the Senate as at the time of Episode III he still has the support OF the Senate and this will continue for some years...by the time Senators realise what's happened, it's too late as Palpatine has a tight enough grip on the galaxy (and a helluva lot of military might and powers, given to him willingly by the Senate).

We see the beginnings of the Rebellion in Episode III, we see the architects of the Rebellion in Episode III but we won't see outright Rebellion for a long time in the GFFA because when Luke states to Threepio "You know of the rebellion against the Empire ?", it's like outright Rebellion has only started to happen (1 to 2 years max) and the reason for the Death Star taking so long to build is purely because there's no way Palpatine can come out with this `Ultimate Weapon` so early in his `reign` so it has to be kept secret...for a lo-o-o-ong time !

And he can't be seen to be spending a lot of money without the approval of the Senate so everything regarding cost with the DS has to be done behind the scenes.

THAT makes sense. I didn't think of that. The second Death Star was constructed much faster because, by that point, he was already blatantly ruling with an iron fist. I'm suprised that I didn't think of that. It totally makes me think of another movie I saw where the government was forced to go public with a huge secret project that they couldn't hide in the budget any longer.
