Hasn't every Star Wars Video release been limited edition? I always thought they did this since they want to release them over and over again every few years.

The 1997 Special Editions were limited editions. Then they brought them out again 3 years later with new packaging and an Episode 2 on the set preview. The interesting thing about this set is that when the new HD-DVD set makes its way out in a few years, Lucas will change some stuff for that release, so this makes this one unique. The theatrical release of the Special Editions have never seen DVD, so there's a chance history will repeat it's self and we will never see this edition hit HD-DVD.

That being said, there has never been a Star Wars release that didn't have enough units out there to fill the shelves for six months.

Good marketing by Lucasfilm...

I'd guess that they will be re-released as indivdual movies sometime early 2005 (similar to The Godfather), then we'll get ROTS DVD and then the box set of all 6 movies...

In that case I'll just buy RotS. I don't really need a stupid box . . .

My thoughts exactly.
Unless there's some kind of massive, super exclusive bonus material in the proposed HD box set they can get fucked with their marketing scams.
Seriously, this is the third time I've bought the OT.
Enough's enough!

So this has been confirmed, eh? Not good news for my friend, who plans on not buying the set right away. I'll have to tell him he'd better make some kind of plan or suffer the consequences.

I worked at a Suncoast Motion Picture Company for a while, and yes this is nothing more than a marketing ploy to "scare" people into the purchase. It always happens with big releases, and Disney is very known for this.

When Disney was releasing things "for a limited time" it was highly advertised, and it worked. We had people coming in to the store buying 5 copies to send to their friends and relatives because it wasn't "going to last".

HA HA! and after this so called "limited time" you could still get the movie for months afterward.

I know... I got suckered into buying Fantasia because they said it was the ONLY TIME IT WOULD BE AVAILABLE for home video. And I still see it in stores to this day and that was about 12 years ago.

My advice? Just rent the things... especially if you are sure that they will be releasing another version of these films after E3 is released. Just rent them, get it out of your system, then wait for the next edition. You'll probably be a happier person for it, and won't feel suckered into something that you know could be much better quality.

Wishful thinking. We'll never get the "real" editions, as you call them. The "REAL" editions of Star Wars is whatever version George Lucas feels they are at the time he decides to release them.

The reality is that with HD-DVD and Blue-Ray players coming out very soon, people may end up buying all their current DVDs all over again on HD for the better picture quality. Lucas realized this and took full advantage of the current peak in DVD sales. Waiting two more years after the saga was complete would have been a wasted opportunity.

I agree, Lucas realized that, in just a short time, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, will emerge as the next BIG home entertainment medium, and he will have missed the chance to profit off of the current DVD craze. Every company is currently dumping their catalogs on the market, hoping to cash in. Then, the cycle will repeat, again, with the next generation. The funny thing is, when asked why he decided to release these dvd's, now, instead of 2007 (his original intention), George said it was because the climate had changed, and everyone is so worried about copyright laws, and that he might as well release them now, so they will be available, and people won't have to make bootlegs. He is right about one thing...the climate is changing. Soon, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray will be out, and he doesn't want to miss the chance to CASH IN, baby! If he was so worried about people making copies, he would have released the dvd's years ago!

Lucas can't win. No matter what he does, people bitch and moan. If I were him, I would have dropped the whole project after the EP I complaints and publicly told everyone to go to hell.

But he's nicer than I am.

Damn You Lucas of course I bought them yesterday at a super target and there was a huge pile of them sitting around so we'll see. I only have this set, the pan n' scan SE VHS, OT VHS, and episodes 1 and 2 on DVD.
