In case you guys didnt know this, IGN has their review up. I didnt see any other threads saying this so I thought I would make one. It is actually a pretty good review. Its more of a nastalgia trip than a review though.

hmmm what's interesting in their review is they say that one of the change on ESB is "The battle of Hoth is enhanced with a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers." This is the first time I hear that one. Can anyone confirm that?

so far most reviews haven't mentioned anything about the lightsabers being inconsistent.

i'll be a very happy camper if the pics we've been seeing so far are WiP.

well, guess I will find out by the 21st.

There's no such thing as a WIP DVD.

There is no new "ground battle" on Hoth. All the same old, same old.

Seven pages of pointless reminiscing, followed by a short, not particularly in-depth review...

Even their Attack of the Clones review was more detailed...

I think its pretty cool. What do you want them to say? This isnt just some random movies that came out 6 months ago. This is the fucking star wars trilogy. The holy trilogy if you will. Arguably, the most anticipated release ever. What could they have said that hasnt already been said. We know the video and audio will be topnotch. We know about the changes. If your a regular on this forum, then you probably have the movies downloaded already. I think talking about the impact of the movies was much more meaningful and appropriate than just the standard review. Just my thoughts.

But the video and audio aren't top notch. There are issues with the saber effects, and some of the dialogue. A decent review would have pointed that out. Too many reviewers get carried away with spouting their opinions about films, rather than doing what they're supposed to be doing - critiquing the DVDs.

Isnt there opinions the hole point of the DVD Review?
They cant be totally anual, and dont have time to freeze frame every minute of the movie.

Well no release is ever perfect, but I think the idea is to gauge whether or not the blemishes in quality detract from the overall experiance of seeing the films. Take some of the oft critiqued lightsaber effects shots. Now, they may indeed look crappy when freeze framed, analyzed, and compared with other video releases, the new films, etc.... However, those same lightsabers in motion for the few seconds they flash across the screen may not look so bad. Since I dont have the discs and have not seen any of the rips, I cant tell. It is relevant to note that these releases were stepped up in major fashion as the original plan was to release them after EP. III was out on DVD as well. We bitched and pissed and moaned and fucking lamented Lucasfilm for not putting them out when we wanted them so much so that the powers at Lucasfilm finally caved. since there was still a major film in production at the time the discs were being done, a production that was tying up major resources and people at ILM and Skywalker Sound, it's reasonable to assume they set aside resources as they could get them to do the job. The result of such a less than focused approach is not going to be without some mistakes. Overall I think you will find that what was achieved will be quite an experiance regardless of the problems that were faced, or the expectations that were not met. Thre will always be issues with the films as they are twenty years old and older, so they will never be the same consistant quality as many newer films. But just the fact that they were, at all, able to produce somethign that most reviews say stand up to the quality of films that were just shot last year, is a testement to the work that went into them.

Oh yeah, and fuck that guy, that guy's wrong, TFN is for BIG nerds, blah blah blah and all the rest of the bullshit that seems to pass around here like so much bowel-stoked methane. You guys are way too smart to be such unrelenting asses sometimes.

Opinions relating to the quality of the DVD yes, but when I look at a DVD review I want to know if the audio, video and bonus content is up to scratch. If I want to read a film review I'll read one. I'm not saying they can't do it, but I don't like reviews that are padded out with pages of opinion about the films (which I've invariably seen anyway).

I'm not referring to anyone in particular, merely paraphrasing the majority of the commentary I have seen in the few weeks I've been visiting the boards. Call me a nub or whatever, since I don't pay particular attention to message board hierarchy, bu I don't think theres a topic that can be posed in here that isn't worthy of discussion, as long as all the involved parties maintain some semblance of decorum. There's just too much senseless ego showing going on by people who, for whatever reason they may have, refuse to be wrong about either fact or opinion. And this whole thing with TFN, come on, it's just another message board. It's just very visible and accessable to more people, so you have a much broader mix of ages and experiances. Anyway, I wasn't referring to any individual.
