They're still holding out on us...I wish we could get the music when Rey steals the lightsaber from Kylo.

That version of the Force theme was taken from the original Star Wars score.

It's from the Burning Homestead track. Using recordings from other scores is a major pet peeve of mine. It takes me right out of the movie because I've heard it so many times.

The PT did this constantly.

Yeah but the PT did it to a ridiculous amount.

I thought in this instance it was simply perfect.

It was a perfect use of that version of the theme, although the first thing I thought of was Luke standing in front of the burning homestead.

This is becoming my favorite John Williams score, yet it's taking a beating from the sheep.

I'm digging it too, and I've been analyzing the living fuck out of Williams since 1976.

How can anyone hear this and not just love what he's done is beyond me: http://waltdisneystudiosawards.com/musi ... rack23.mp3

I've warmed up more to the score after buying the soundtrack. While I don't love the whole score on the same level as Empire's or a couple of the others, The Jedi Steps has definitely become one of my favorite tracks in the whole saga.

It's so haunting and perfect for that last build up to seeing Luke again, and probably even better for someone that jumped into Star Wars for the first time with TFA and is waiting to see Luke for the first time after hearing about him for so long.

Thematically, it's cohesive and it bests the prequel scores in that regard. There are plenty of big moments in the score, but at least in my viewing of the film, the music was constantly buried in the sound mix and never really able to come alive. There are some key moments where it does, however, such as Rey's Theme and the Force Theme in the finale and the tracked "The Return Home" when Rey gets the lightsaber (two moments where there are no sound effects or dialogue), which didn't fit stylistically with the rest of the score, in my opinion.

The second half of "Torn Apart" (OST version, not the FYC) wasn't even used in the film as I recall and it's positively epic.

I thought the score ‘in film’ was rather underwhelming. The notable exception being ‘The Scavenger’ sequence. The rest of the time it seemed quite 'background' (more so than usual). In terms of the score itself, Williams can do little wrong, but I do think this is one of the weaker entries into Star Wars (on par with AOTC or perhaps better). Not sure if that is due to Williams himself or the material he had to work with. In terms of the OST, for me, the standout tracks are Rey's Theme (which is reminiscent of Harry Potter ATCOS) and March of the Resistance (which is very Indiana Jones like). I also like Kylo Ren's leitmotif, which in its undeveloped form calls back to the imperial leitmotif of ANH.

After listening to the OST, the score has certainly grown on me. I do think it could have been used a bit better in the film.

It's easily better than the scores for AOTC and ROTS. I'm not sure if it's quite as good as TPM, which was more thematic. There's still plenty of filler in TFA, but it's well done overall.

JW recorded a unique Force Theme cue when Rey grabs the saber that JJ replaced with the cue from ANH. It's an interesting choice, but I might have gone with the new one just for uniqueness.

Better than the OST for ROTS? That's surprising... whilst respecting your preference of course.

RotS is the most unique and outstanding scores of all 7 movie scores we have so far. Anakiny Betrayl, Anakins Dark Deeds, Battle of the Heros, Padmes Rumination, the Opera Scene, Grievous Theme, the complete Battle at the Beginning...so much to take from this score. It was an instand classic, for me at least.

I do agree that after first seeing the movie I really didnt take any of the Music with me. I just didnt delivered the way I expected. After listening the score alone I must say that this is a great score which goes along with movie just perfectly. Kylos "Theme" is much like the Vader/Empire Theme of Ep IV, Reys theme, Resistance Theme, Scherzo of X-Wings, the Attack of the Jakku Camp and the Millenium Falcon are all very great Music cues which suit the movie great. When I saw the movie the second time and was able to notice much more stuff I was Aware of the score much more then when I viewed the movie in the first place.

I cant say anything bad about the score itself beside that its track titles are much more blank than the ones of the other movie scores.

Thanks DP. It is great to have access to all this material.

As I said in the other thread, I still have very mixed feelings on this score. It grows on me with each listen. But there are some tracks (Rathtars, I Can Fly Anything) that are so chaotic and frenzied, and mickey-mouse each beat so much that it's a different piece of music each ten seconds. I much prefer Williams when he is more thematic and less literal. TESB is my favorite soundtrack for that reason. He seemed to look at a scene as a whole and come up with something that worked for the entire scene, not just the next few seconds.

I also thought the music was really down in the mix. Not sure why. That didn't help. I really walked out of their not remembering a single musical cue. It lacked that feature track that all the prequels had. There are still a lot of great pieces of music in here though, and my feelings on it gets more favorable dach day. I'd probably rank it my 6th favorite score in the saga at this point. The AOTC score is my least favorite - and that has nothing to do with Williams. That's for the ridiculous hack job Lucas & Burtt did of the score in the edit. Probably the worst thing Lucas did in the prequels.

I'd like to know if they are ever going to release unused music. There's also lots of great JW music from the trailers and TV spots.

The first one-minute spot that opens with Jedi Steps has some great cues. I absolutely love the stuff that immediately follows Jedi Steps and closes out the spot. Feels like it was pulled from 1980.
