Quote:
“I think the fans are going to love it”

“It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

Lucas finally saw the movie and had this to say about it.

There is something very double-edged about that comment.

Thoughts?

A movie made to pander the masses. Not surprised at all, considering what has been released so far.

I think it's fair to say that The Flanneled One is aware of fans being less than pleased with the prequels, and his edits to the classic films.

I take his statement as an acknowledgement of those critiques, and that this film is at least in line with the fan base, even if it is a less than gracious compliment. Besides, J.J. is a childhood fan of the films so it's only fair to expect that he craft something that harkens back to what he loved as a kid.

Whats with the negativity? Everything that was released so far looks far and beyond better than anything the prequels done IMO. Masses? Bud if you pay $4bill for a franchise you sure as hell want to make sure everyone will see it. Something wrong what that? :vfuckoff:

No matter what Lucas says, people will find negativity in it. He could say "wow it's the best Star Wars movie yet!" and people would say that means he hated it.

He also doesn't have to be a passive-aggressive little shit about it. Because the comment is on top of the Charlie Rose interview where he speaks about divorcing himself from the production, it reeks of derision.

The most fan servicing prequel was Attack of the Clones. It was written and produced entirely as a reaction to the ire and criticisms the fans had with Phantom Menace. Yeah, I'd say there was something wrong with that. Let me list them for you in case I forget a few :

Less Jar Jar-like....sorry guys
Bounty hunters-SHITE bounty hunters, that just happened to be shape shifters for absolutely no reason at all.
Yellow speeder-cos y'know Anakin would remember it from his adventures on Naboo
Jango Fett-the kids loved Boba, lets shove him and his family into the story.
Clones....hunners of them. All looking stiff and huge of thigh!
Anakin riding a giant tick because......
Anakin wishing he could wish his wishes away
Padme having to get her tight abs out to appease the sheep cos the arena scene was boring as hell
the horrible editing, both musically and visiually. Ben Burtt is a genius but this was horrendous

GL seems to think you can direct a film from the edit suite, rather than trying to get a performance from the actors while actually filming them. No wonder there was no actual chemistry among people when they had to show up on set and respond to a tennis ball on a stick that would eventually become his mothe or some other character important and emotionally vital to the story.

Literally half of your points do not even qualify as fan service, but whatever.

I can't be-grunge Lucas for complement/slight.

Ironically, he is now in the same mind state as the "fans" who didn't agree with his vision for the PT. In other words: Lucas gave Disney his treatments, which probably provided them with a road map to make an Episode 7 that would be deeper than a general audience pleaser. He trusted Kennedy to take his ideas very seriously and the end product isn't what he hoped for or expected.

As I said before, I would like Lucas' original concepts for the ST get made into a film some day. I'm sure there's a lot of substance behind his original take on the ST.

In any case, I expect Episode 7 and the subsequent debate about its place in the franchise to be fun. Almost there.

Huh? What indicator do you use to think that "Ep 7 would be deeper" if they used his treatment? The last time he was doing SW he created 3 worthless films and you haven't even seen Ep7 yet.

Its pretty clear that Lucas is still btfo. And while I do agree that the fan community can be harsh (incl. myself) he really has only himself and his ego to blame. I know this is like beating a dead horse but to me the prequels have no redeeming value. I have no desire to ever see them again. So even if Ep7 is really good Lucas will of course not admit it. His quote did not even reveal if he liked it. He only said that everyone else will.

I kind of lost my focus halfway through, though in my defence I was very, very drunk.

Thank you for posting that link. I hadn't seen it, and its lovely.

I wish I didn't know that Lucas didn't write the "I know" line. (Ford ad-libed it.)
