Got my tickets for the IMAX 3D premiere Thursday evening secured just a few minutes before Fandango went down. Not going to do the whole saga marathon... I love Star Wars, but not quite enough to spend that much time in a movie theater.

Getting the tickets was an adventure itself. Seems everyone crashed the servers on release.

So can we finally declare the "The prequels killed Star Wars" narrative to be the piece of shit that it is?

They've already raked in more than $6.5 million in presales for IMAX alone.

Quote:
Still, Fandango has already confirmed a new record in pre-sales, selling eight times as many tickets as it did on the first day of sales for the previous record holder, the first Hunger Games film. AMC also has reported sales for The Force Awakens beat the previous record holder by more than 10 fold (IMAX ticket sales accounted for approximately 38 percent of AMC’s ticket sales gross), and the theater chain sold out more than 1,000 shows nationwide.

Force Awakens also has set a new record for MovieTickets.com, with Monday-night sales coming in three times higher than at any point in the company's 15-year history. And sales for the movie are already four times greater than advance sales for the last title in the franchise, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, during the same time period. Overall, tickets for Abrams' film represents 95 percent of all tickets sold on MovieTickets.com

The hype has been managed meticulously and will be paying off big-time for Disney.

Depends how well the new movie is received it might end up being "The sequels killed Star Wars".

This could be as great as the OT, and some asshole will still say that.

From the new trailer I think the tone is noticeably different from the OT. I would even go as far to say it feels "un-Star Wars." It could be partly because of John Williams using a very different tone for the trailer music, but also JJ Abrams' camera movements and style.

This is to say that the OT was a clear product of its time and I don't think it's actually possible to recapture that magic. It's come and gone. It doesn't mean there can't be another great Star Wars movie; it just won't feel like it did. I love John Williams, but he isn't the same guy he was 35 years ago. His style has evolved and changed. The OT scores are magic. They're perfect in every way and incredibly thematic. JW's scores of late haven't had that quality or consistency to them.

Then again, I thought he first 2 trailers felt very OT-like and JW referenced the tone of his OT work very well in them. 2 months to find out how it comes together.

EDIT: http://makingstarwars.net/2015/10/the-s ... o-himself/

Knew there was something off about the music.

Tickets are bought for the night from December 16th to 17th, 0:00 am. Girlfriend is joining me, even she is excited about the movie.

Got best seats in the house lucky me. Counting down the seconds...
