The word terrible is thrown around a lot these days...

Incredibly disappointing. If there was any film (and studio) I thought would bring back the classic Struzan-style poster I thought it would be this one. This has to be a Disney move, because it's photoshop garbage like the Marvel films.

Just, ugh.

My first takeaway from this poster is wtf that is behind Rens shoulder? Pseudo Death Star?

It's so terrible that I'm convinced it's a fake even though it's posted on StarWars.com.

I'm glad it looks so average. It brings my expectations down for the first time in the lead up to the movie. Where is the rumored new logo? They're waiting for the trailer?

Scrolled up from the comments and was expecting something far worse.

It ain't Struzan, which is a shame, but I'm diggin' it. Very colorful and well-composed.

And another Death Star?! Of course!

I half expected a poster like this as most, if not all of the Marvel posters are the same....Disney seem to stick with a theme that works.
I can’t say I’m disappointed with it...disappointed that Struzan wasn’t involved, but he has retired saying that.

No Luke was my 1st thought...however going from what has leaked so far about Luke, and not wanting to spoil it for anyone on here, I can understand why he’s not on it.

Also wonder why General Hux & Supreme Leader Snoke dont make an appearance...lots of Resistance characters in the poster..not many First Order...

I believe they confused "new logo" with "new poster." I'm not banking on a new logo, otherwise they'd have put it on the poster. I was really hoping for something in the same vein as the OT logos, but alas it was not meant to be.

Remember the ROTS One-sheet? That one was also a mess. Didn't Struzan say that one was also digitally altered and composed? I somehow remember that there wasn't supposed to be a composition of the ROTS Cast with the image of Vader's helmet.

This one? It's just bad as that one. I didn't like how the credits on this one-sheet is your typical generic credit format...They could have gone with the style of credit format that the first six movies employed.

The only thing I can say about this digital shitfest is "Beautiful." That's it. Beautiful but lacks the cohesiveness and emotion used by the first six one-sheets.

Edit: For comparison - The ROTS one sheet.

Looks fine to me.

Interesting that Mark has 2nd billing, but Luke isn't on the poster.

Also, Michael Arndt is listed in the writing credits. So much for the stupid rumor about him having been "fired" because JJ didn't like his script.

Bander - Well Remember Leigh Brackett still received writing credit for The Empire Strikes Back even though her draft was tossed out and Kasdan was hired to write a draft that ended up becoming the final film. I suspect Arndt is listed for the same reason.

As for Mark's second billing - Remember Alec Guinness got second billing for A New Hope and the Classic Three got top billing? That's the same approach here as with OT. "Focus on the new generation of heroes and make the legends get second billing."

The ROTS one sheet was indeed digitally altered and is the worst of the PT posters. However, character art and style is still pretty good.

I'm just going to accept the D23 poster as the one sheet.

Very true.

I'm still of the belief that Arndt was contracted for one year, did his thing and moved on, and then the script was re-done by JJ and Kasden. Not an unusual set of circumstances. Happens with movies all the time.

Didn't Abrams or someone claim that the D23 poster is "incomplete" and that we might see it as part of a larger puzzle?

I'm convinced Disney is holding back Luke from the movie so as to not spoil his appearance in the movie.

I think it's alright, but I like the horizontal treatment a lot more than the vertical. There's so much going on that it really feels like they're doing separate character posters for promotion and then everything gets mashed together for the one sheet.

I've been vocal about my love of all things TFA so far... but this looks like bunk. I would have liked to see a traditional artist produce something rather than a photoshop team.

You know, if SW was still under George Lucas' control, the actual poster might have had a lot more Jar Jar in it.

Since we're all on Trailer hype, We haven't speculated on if the rerelease of the OT for the Marathon would feature the theatrical cuts or the butchered Blu-Ray editions?

What makes that perfect is that it doesn't look any more/less real than the actual poster.

And this:

The poster was like "It's gonna be majestic!" The movie ended up being Okay.

Don't you mean double fml Since ROTJ did the whole "Let's resurrect the Death Star" ploy...Switching sides might not work. At least PT Sorta worked without a Death Star as a mechanism in the overall trilogy.

Brackett was given credit because she died after she gave her first draft and before she started the second and Lucas wanted to pay respect to her memory (and probably take care of her family forever and ever).

Even if you already knew that, I just love that story.

Oh thats very cool! glad its not another Death Star.

I think poster is average. It would have been nice if they just tried something else for a change. I guess it only matters that the movie is good anyways.

I could be wrong but isn't that just a bigger badder Death Star? That will be replaced by something even more terrifying once it's knocked out? Seems gimmicky but it could be awesome.

I already knew that. I didn't mention her death because I was under the impression that Bander knew that about Brackett. So why the need to point that out if Bander clearly knew that? But I bet you didn't know that Lucas had her draft tossed out in favor of the Kasdan draft huh?

Whoa man chill. I wasn't trying to call anyone out or anything. It seems like a different situation with the screenwriters on TFA and like I said I love that story and to share it.

Wha...? I never was angry when I wrote what I said. I was sitting here giving you that confused look and questioning why you would bring Brackett's death up if you knew her draft was eventually tossed out.

Was Ardnt's draft tossed out? Yes. So it has nothing to do with her death or paying respect to her family/estate. Both screenwriters had their drafts tossed out. That's the nature of the film industry. Studio "X" hires Screenwriter Joe to do a draft; later decides not to use it then hires Screenwriter Steve to do a draft that they think can be better. It's a cyclical thing in the industry.

I wasn't accusing you of calling anyone else out. You're making me sit here longer and giving you even more confused expression on my face than I was 10 minutes ago.

Sorry, buddy. My bad.

Here's a bizarre Deadline article: deadline.com/ /george-lucas-star-wars-poster-the-force-awakens/

Anyone think Uncle George should have been included?

I'm likely in the minority on this, but without George Lucas involved, this just won't feel the same to me. I hope TFA is great, and I am looking forward to it. But without George, yeah, not the same.

I detailed all that in a post here the day of the Disney acquisition.

I do have to say though, I did not expect this level of overall excitement for this film. It is great to see.

Same here. I've said this before but this new trilogy, since it doesn't follow George's treatments nor is he involved in its production, is nothing more than licensed fan-fiction. Good or bad, wether I like it or not as a film, it will be nothing but that. 'What-if' stories.

Psst... It does follow the treatments with some tweaks. They simply chose not to use Ardnt's revised treatment and script.
