Hmmmm, that's a 'light' themed robe.

What's with the 360 degree camera set-up. To create a digital stunt double?

Probably just the intense studio lighting.

Luke Desilijic Tiure. Like I'm one to talk. The years have been slightly kinder to myself than Mark, very slightly.

I do like the light theme but does it really mean anything. When he was young and fully on the light path he wore Black so the color doesn't seem to represent his current state.

My guess? Hologram. Camera rig to capture Mark in a way that will allow ILM to composite him as a hologram which can be rotated as needed shot to shot.

"You shall not....." sorry wrong movie franchise...... :D

The white under-robes reminded me instantly of old Ben from New Hope....not so sure about the lighter outer cloak though.....

yea thats what I thought of with the small white platform he is on

I just hope it isn't a force ghost being filmed. I don't believe they will kill him off but those robes don't look like the ones the guy putting his hand on artoo was wearing.

Here is the bts picture for that scene (Luke and R2 are in the burned village from the beginning of the film). Maybe it is a different robe.

Informed speculation based upon concept art, promo pictures, articles, and trailers seem to indicate that pirate Maz Kanata tells the 'Story of Luke' which features a lore dump about Rey and Ren to the Old Solo group - perhaps on the Greenwood commons set referrred to as "Yavin".

I think it is more than lighting, but there is no reason he can't be wearing two different robes. Perhaps the dark one is his alone in hiding robes and the white ones are him returning to the galaxy and the resistance and all cleaned up. I picture end of seven similar to end of empire where they are talking to Lando setting up Hans rescue.

The end of 7 could be Luke communicating via holo to Leia saying that he has begun training Rey and Finn or sending a message meant to go out to all the citizens of the galaxy that he has returned he isn't crazy and evil, "see I'm wearing very non threatening light colored garb"

since it is being taken down around the net it is likely significant.

Over the past 30 years, it’s possible that Luke hasn’t had to deal with circumstances as dark as the OT. Hence, his ditching of the dark Skywalker color scheme.

It’s also possible that times have been so dark that he’s responded by going in the complete opposite direction. His clothing is an outward reflection of his inner-peace and virtue.

Or maybe, Abrams and Kaplan just liked how the outfit looked on Hamill. As far as traditional Jedi get-up goes, it’s a pretty cool design.

To me, it seems like Abrams is simply saying that Luke is the new "old Ben."
