I mean wow. JJ nailed it. You can nit pick all you want, this teaser is perfect IMO. Love the new faces and voice of Mark H. Actually had a tear in my eye because it returned me into a galaxy far far away I loved so much when I saw EP4 in '78 as a kid.

They've nailed so much of the promotion for this film. Everything just feels right. Hopefully the actual film delivers.

It's stuff like this that has me assured about Disney's takeover of Lucasfilm, because they've got blockbuster movie-making down to a science right now with their Marvel properties and what (little) we've seen from TFA.

I agree with everyone: it's as good a trailer as you could hope for. Visually, everything looks as an OT sequel should.

I'll have to watch it a few more times to figure out where it ranks on my list of favorite SW trailers.

I was hoping that Luke's ROTJ saber would be the linking lightsaber for the new trilogy. That succession would have been the most balanced (Anakin's final PT saber links to the OT; Luke's final OT saber links to the ST). I guess it was obliterated with the Death Star II.

When it comes to Anakin's saber surviving the Bespin plunge, I'll give Abrams a pass by citing "Star Wars physics."

I wan't expecting to appreciate the Vader mask but the skull-like charred remains are actually quite chilling. I love it!
I was also really impressed with the physical BB-8 prop during the presentation. Seeing him roll around was a real 'movie magic' moment.

Great trailer. Any doubts I ever had for this movie has been wiped clean by the mere fact that this feels very OT-like for me.

IIRC, Luke has his saber swinging from his belt when he walks into the Ewok village st the end of ROJ. I've always thought he picked the saber up "off-screen" while he was transporting Vader to the shuttle after the Emperor's death.

Gotta mention JJ's clear skirting of any reference to the PT during the initial panel discussion. I see their game.

Either way, this is the beginning of new Star Wars I think we'll all enjoy regardless of where you stand with respect to the now somewhat disavowed first third of the saga.

--- Back to trailer discussion ---

Some stand out elements and moments:

Love the new Lucasfilm logo. Classy.

Poe's ecstatic "woooohoooo!" was a lump-in-the-throat moment. The humanity is The rebels are back!

That outstretched hand and Finn eagerly reaching toward it felt so Spielbergian to me.

That Abrams-ZoomTM! :o

"Chewie, we're home." That means so much more than what it does in the as-yet-unknown (to my spoiler-free self, anyway) narrative context.

I agree. The new logo makes up for the 20th Century Fox logo getting the shaft and FINALLY, it doesn't feel like we're stuck in 1997 with the old LFL intro as we have for the last ten years.

And the surprise with Solo and Chewie... That right there grabbed me.

I think ueber analyzing everything will only lead to anger. And anger will lead to hate and hate....:)

I will def not make the mistake again like I did with the prequels. It's going to make the movie a lot more enjoyable. I think.

I do have one question: Luke's voiceover, is new? Someone said its from ROTJ which clearly it's not. The original line is "The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia."

I could see the comments about having practical effects and constructed sets make George shake in his seat with nerd rage. It's paid off though; the blend of old and new looks so good so far. Internet commentary seems overwhelmingly positive.

The progression makes sense. Squeaky clean PT, lived-in OT and now a gnarly as hell ST.

And I highly doubt The Flanneled One was in the audience or even watching from home.

Anyone notice the ominous echo after every one of Luke's lines? Very subtle, but it's there.

Quote:
I do have one question: Luke's voiceover, is new? Someone said its from ROTJ which clearly it's not. The original line is "The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia."

Luke first says "You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too" before going into "The Force runs strong in my family..."

They could have just switched the order, but I think the reading sounds slightly different.

Notably, in ROTJ "you have that power too" ends with a bit of a whisper, but in the trailer it's more pronounced. The line readings also end a bit more suddenly in the trailer than they do in the movie.

It does sounds like a younger Mark Hamill, mind you so it wouldn't shock me if this were an older recording repurposed just for this trailer.

It's a re-wording of the ROTJ dialogue.

That trailer was off-fucking-tap btw. Thanks also for posting the hi-res version :)

I've never been good with lightsabres. Is the one shown in the trailer from the PT or OT?

The prequel one was machined while word is that they sourced a vintage flash handle for the new one. Assuming it's Anakin's recovered from Bespin.

I can guess how BB works with magnets, motors and gyros, but it's so refreshing to see something that the brain doesn't register to be 'fake' in an instant. I imagine that's how audiences perceived Yoda in 1980.

The music seems to have been scored specifically for this teaser, like the last one. The piano key after the first part of the Force Theme when the screen goes black stuck out. Phenomenal stuff.

Also convinced the dogfight at the end is through a super star destroyer.

Day #1 at Anaheim was absolutely amazing - crazy shit as you can imagine.
I arrived in LA the day before and went to pick up my 4 day pass. After wondering back outside, up walks Dave Filoni (sans hat) with his missus.
Introduced myself, shook his hand and thanked him for his awesome contribution to Star Wars. And he in turn thanked me and said that "he's here for us guys".

He was kind enough for a photo and that was that.
Day #1 of the Con was absolutely nuts. I didn't get in to see the opening panel (that line up was insane) but that trailer is absolutely farking insane. I'm a grown man and Ford's line at the end made me fucking tear up. I love the Prequels, loved The Clone Wars but this speaks to my ten year old inner child and lets him know his old friends are alive and well and send their regards. Great job - magnificent. JJ you glorious mother fucker, you've done it!

Otherwise, shouldn't it be "my father HAD it" instead of "my father HAS it"?

I was thinking the exact same thing.....why would Luke say that as it was in the present tense and not the past?

Anyway....after watching the trailer countless times & going through every last detail I thought id throw a few things out there...

I have no idea whatsoever how to post images up on here (im not that technical) so appologies for such a lengthy post...but here are a few points. (Please bear in mind that I have tried to avoid all spoilers so im not that much up to date on things that have already been leaked.)

Loved the clip of Vader's helmet....I hope we see how it got to where it is in the movie....a flashback to Endor would be very cool.

Id definitely say that's Luke touching R2...but what's happened to the synthetic skin on his mechanical hand? How has he lost it???

Not sure if anyone else on here has seen this , but if you frame advance the next scene where Anakin/Luke's saber gets handed to the female (which is presumably Leia as Lukes narrative says "my sister" as this happens)...you can just make out a profile shot of a large alien eye and nose. If you haven't seen it, give it a look.

Skip a few shots then check out the shot with all the Stormtroopers. I love this shot! There's so much in it...The new Snowtrooper right in the middle, to the left what looks like a new style of trooper dressed in black. It remained me of the Death Star Commander that was in A New Hope. The new design logo for The Empire, or should I say First Order. All the huge laser turrets nestled into the mountain side, that must be some base to be that heavily defended and lastly...who is the guy bang in the centre on the podium (the one who looks like he/she is addressing the troops.).

Here's where it gets a bit complicated....the shot of the battle in what looks like a hanger bay...Stormtroopers V Stormtroopers???? That Tie Fighter that is firing on the troops in the foreground is totally different to what we've seen so far. It has different marking on it and the viewport is a slit not the standard round style. Also...check out the ships in the background...they're the same ones you see flying towards the new style Star Destroyer in the shot later in the trailer. Im wondering if these two separate shots are from the same battle?

And finally....not to nit-pick or anything, but does anyone else think Chewie looks a little too well groomed? I seem to remember him more shaggy. Maybe since the fall of the Empire he has had the time to find a better salon!!!! ;P

All in all, and for what my opinion matters, I cant stop watching this trailer...it feels so right, so Star Wars more than any of the prequels ever did....it has taken me back to my childhood back in '77 so many times....JJ looks like he has worked his magic once again...to be truthful, after what he did for the other Star....I cant say it or i'll burn...franchise there was never any doubt that this was going to be epic! Desperatly trying to keep my feet on the ground till December.... " The boy has no patience" you're god dam right he doesn't! Anyone got a time travelling DeLorean that can lend!!!!!

Let's not forget that the Prequels, Crystal Skull and Star Trek 2009 all had incredible trailers.

The Breathing trailer made Attack of the Clones look like it was going to be better than The Godfather.

Crystal Skull had Harrison delivering the boner-inducing original "part time" line (and holding his gun, which literally was the ONLY time he used it in that film and he didn't even kill anyone!) before they fucked it up in ADR, along with everything else in that film.

With Star Trek, all they needed to show us was the Enterprise and they'd sold the film. This thing went above and beyond that with a melange of iconic shit galore. Really, all they needed to show us was Han and Chewie standing there.

Remember back to your early teachings. It'd be pretty hard to fuck this thing up from a marketing standpoint when you're basically showing off stuff we know in our hearts is better than
basically everything.

Vader's helmet, Luke's lightsaber, the Falcon, Stormtroopers, X-Wings, Han and Chewie. I want to get my hopes up but I'm still expecting the worst. But that's what happens. That's what happens when so many of your favorite things get awful sequels, prequels and remakes. You become a jaded fuckhead that hates everything.

That being said, I was disappointed that this minute-long teaser seemed to confirm all the rumors/spoilers that they called bullshit on. I'm now certain we have a fairly accurate synopsis for this film, yeah? I guess I just hoped they'd had more up their sleeve.

I don't disagree that we've been burned before by great trailers and we may very well be burned again by TFA. There's a bunch of areas this could go wrong:

- The ST feels totally unnecessary narratively

- The OT cast isn't up to the task, is irrelevant, out of place and is shoehorned into the story - I'm already expecting Carrie to be a clusterfuck and after seeing Peter Mayhew struggle to walk I'm not sure how he was able to convincingly portray Chewbacca. I actually think they will hide Leia from the marketing as much as possible

- The script tries to cram too much into one movie
- The movie tries to give the fans too much of what they want and not enough of what they need
- The unknown actress, whose performance the movie hinges on, falls flat on her face

And so forth. We all know this stuff going in but it would be a waste not to soak up these good vibes and enjoy the ride. It might take us to a damned amazing Star Wars movie or to a place of disappointment we've already visited. I don't think fans are nearly as deluded as we once were. There's more of a "reserved optimism" than a fanatical proclamation that Ep7 will be the best movie of all time.

Personally, I trust JJ Abrams. I think he's certainly more qualified to deliver an amazing Star Wars movie than George was in 1999. I think at worst we're going to get a love-letter to the OT (hopefully without the kind of winks that made Crystal Skull uncomfortable to watch), and at best we get a strong chapter in the saga that kicks off a worthy sequel trilogy.

Also worth noting that there were plenty of warning signs that TPM, AOTC and KOTCS could be trouble. I remember the leaked audio clip of Jar Jar and Qui-Gon's exchange in the sub and the utter panic it caused fandom. That panic seemed validated by the second trailer and stiff acting that was revealed in promotional clips. The forbidden love trailer for AOTC was a mess and there were all sorts of concerns around the love story, which proved to be true. By ROTS, fans knew what to expect.

Indy had decent trailers, but I think fan hope was greater than what was actually shown. Most of the footage in the trailers played as self-parody and self-referential than worthy entry to the Indy canon. Not to mention the fears about Shia's presence.

As for Trek, it currently sits at a 95% on RT and is widely considered to have brought Star Trek back to relevance. I don't know anyone who doesn't like that film and even though it isn't what fans want from their Star Trek, it absolutely made it accessible and entertaining for a broader audience.

I don't think fans have anything to fret over with VII. After viewing the teaser with fans and getting a pulse of the community at Celebration, I have all the faith in the world that J.J. Abrams will deliver a film Star Wars fans will love. Just enjoy the ride until December.

I feel like I'm sort of viewing this whole thing on the outside looking in. There are some cool shots and if I cared more about the Star Wars lore beyond George's films I would likely be going nuts about this but as an admirer of Lucas' work as a filmmaker I can help but see all that's missing from the frames we've glimpsed thus far.

I've seen the teaser four times now and feel like I've gotten everything I'm going to get out of it. Conversely, I watched the teasers and trailers for the prequels endlessly when they were released, searching for clues to a story that I already knew how it would end and still watch them from time to time for inspiration. No one can pitch a movie like George Lucas and these two teasers for The Force Awakens make that glaringly apparent to me.

Comparison of Luke's speech from ROTJ to the TFA trailer voiceover. It's the same.
