Release Date: July 17, 2015

Director: Peyton Reed

Story: Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish

Screenplay: Adam McKay & Paul Rudd

Composer: Christophe Beck

Cast:
Paul Rudd - Scott Lang
Michael Douglas - Hank Pym

Official Synopsis:
Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Before Edgar Wright left the project he stated in several interviews over the years that the film's plot would be based on the comic-book story "To Steal An Ant-Man" from Marvel Premiere 47-48. Despite the change in directors, it seems the film will still follow the basics of this story.

Edgar Wright no longer directing Ant Man

Well, that's out of left field. Gotta be more to this situation than just "creative differences". They've been developing this for almost ten years, it finally goes into production and they all of a sudden have a clash in creative direction? C'mon. There's all sorts of rumors going around. Ant Man sheep are going apeshit over this news. I'm not really familiar with Wright's other work as a director (I've only seen Scott Pilgrim which I liked) to have a major opinion on his departure one way or the other. It'll be interesting to see how this affects the cast and script/story if at all when they pick a new director.

This production is already looking like a clusterfuck. What a shame considering that Edgar Wright would have surely given the film a totally different feel from what is typical of a Marvel movie.

I'm sure it'll be at least a half-decent product as most Marvel movies are (Iron Man 2 and 3 are the studios worst movies.)

Peyton Reed has been selected to take over directing duties from the departed Edgar Wright. Adam McKay will be contributing to the script. Based off the loose synopsis it seems they're still keeping the Lang & old Pym scenario from Wright's script.

Never heard of either of them and their credits don't exactly inspire confidence. Neither did the laundry list of other names that Marvel met with. I wish they had just delayed this in order to iron out whatever issues there were with the script but they're obviously hellbent to make the 2015 summer release date. Marvel's last film to have production issues was TDW and it definitely showed in the final product, imo. Hopefully it will work out but I'm leery and I'll be keeping my expectations low.

Comic-con footage description:
Source: io9.com

They haven't started filming yet, but we were able to see a brief teaser that showcased some visual effects tests and some stuff that they had already filmed — basically some great action sequences and voice work from Michael Douglas (Hank Pym) and Paul Rudd (Scott Lang).

There are two components to this pretty zany footage: a scene in Hank Pym's lab, where the camera just pans across the space, showing off all of the weird scientific equipment and bubbling beakers and creepy anthills, before finishing up at an Ant-Man helmet.

During this, Michael Douglas is convincing Scott Lang to do something. Lang protests that Hank seems nice but "I'm not a superhero." That means he's not an egomaniac, and he's not an "undisciplined moron causing more destruciton than he stops," Pym retorts. Superheroes are a "ridiculous concept. You're doing this because it's the right thing to do."

"Someone already stole your balls," Pym taunts Lang. "It's just a small job, he adds.

Cut to a tiny Scott Lang in the Ant-Man suit, running away after completing the "small job" — his Ant-Man helmet is on the fritz, and he keeps losing his connection to Hank Pym, who's barking instructions.

He's supposed to use the helmet to control "the transport" — which turns out to be a small flying ant. He tries to convince the flying ant to help him out, but the ant isn't listening. And then some flying lights show up, chasing him — so Scott has no choice but to jump off the building onto the flying ant, which he doesn't have a very stable grip on. He's trying to reach a rendezvous with Hank, but first he has to survive.

New director Peyton Reed is eager to prove he's up to the job, sharing that it's his 20th Comic-Con in a row. Plus back in the day, Reed was in a punk band called Johnny Quest and once drew the band as the Avengers on a flier, and drew himself as Ant-Man. He showed us that flier.

And Michael Douglas kind of explains the plot of Ant-Man for us: "This is basically the story of a heist. [Hank's] partner has taken the company in a different evil direction, and I have found a [mentee] in Paul [Rudd] to take over my position as Ant-Man. The only problem is Paul is in such incredible shape, such great shape that the Ant-Man suit didn't fit."

Also, it's confirmed that Evangeline Lilly is playing Hank Pym's daughter Hope, and Corey Stoll is the evil ex-partner Darren Cross, who gets his own shrinking suit and becomes the Yellowjacket — the film's villain.

First reaction was that it was very underwhelming but after some repeat viewings, it's grown on me (no pun intended). Kinda looks and feels like a phase 1 film in some ways. People seem to be bitching about the suit, I don't know why, I think it's pretty neat especially the helmet. I look forward to seeing an actual film shot of the Yellowjacket suit because the design judging from the promo art/leaked pic looks really cool. Still holding some optimism for this one.

New images and info from Empire magazine:
Updated with official Marvel pics.

New tidbits:

- Wright's script featured a villain called "Nano Warrior" which was changed to Yellowjacket. Other elements dropped were a car chase and a number of other characters two of which were Dave Callaham and Eric Pearson's which led to Wright's departure. The basic premise of Scott Lang being guided by an older Hank Pym in a mentor like role remains intact.
- Wright had written a post-credit scene for Age of Ultron.
- Evangeline Lilly describes Hope Van Dyne as "kind of a bitch...a very hard woman on a journey towards becoming a decent person."
- She describes the tonal differences between Wright's script and Rudd/McKay's version, "I met with Paul in a little restaurant in New York City, and he talked me through how the movie was changing. I think the most defining difference between the two scripts was that Edgar's didn't take itself as seriously. It was fun and silly and brilliant irreverent - a romp from beginning to end, in classic English fashion. Whereas where we've gotten to is so much more American. There's tons of levity, but just as much emotion."
- Peyton Reed teases appearances from Falcon and other Avengers.
- Peyton Reed on taking over from Edgar Wright, "Was it a strange situation? Absolutely, one of my concerns upfront was, 'Someone else has developed this movie for a really long time. Can I come in and make it my own?' And that has absolutely been the case. For one thing Marvel have let me explore the dark side of Hank Pym, this tortured, guilt-ridden guy. I love that this is a mentor/pupil story, but with a [frick]ed up pupil and a really [frick]ed up mentor."
- Reed mentions that he spoke with Wright via email after accepting the directing job, "We both acknowledged the general weirdness of the situation. It's all very odd, but it's been really nice to communicate with him."

Could've been executed better but I like the concept behind this one.

Japanese trailer with lots of spoilery footage:

Darren Cross "Yellowjacket" Technology promo:

TV spots, trailers and images dropping left and right now. I'm not going to watch this trailer as I read it's pretty spoilerish and even shows part of a certain scene involving
Lang meeting with one of the Avengers at Avengers Academy.

There's gonna be two credit scenes according to twitter reactions from the press screening.

Sub-Atomic !

I only hung around for the mid-credit scene which foreshadows Hope's character. I'm not certain whether there is a post-credit scene?

I can see why James Gunn was so jazzed about this flick it really is fun and has enough one-liners and sly nods to garner a chuckle or 3. It's on par with the first Iron-Man movie in terms of story.

Marvel just keep on producing. After Ant-Man's run in with Falcon I am super keen on seeing him join the Avengers.

p.s retro Michael Douglas looks fckn amazing too

I thoroughly enjoyed this flick! It does start off a bit sluggish but once it hits its stride it is a very fun romp all the way to the end with a more personal, smaller scale story.

The shrinking/microverse environments looked fantastic, the ants looked great and the vfx for the young Michael Douglas was shockingly photo-real. The shrinking elements provided a fresh breath of air to all the action scenes and there were some truly unique ideas ranging from Ant-Man and Yellowjacket fighting inside a briefcase to the entertaining finale in Scott's daughter's room with shrinking/enlarging hijinx galore, (Thomas Tank Engine!). Another great sequence was the trip through the Quantum realm. It literally was trippy  and something we haven't seen before. That's the type of crazy, psychedelic imagery I hope we see in Dr. Strange.

Scott's motley crew of burglars walk a tight rope of being either funny or annoying but luckily it never felt like the action and drama were undercut due to their involvement. I was especially worried about Pena but he actually shined in all his scenes.

Darren Cross won't make any top ten lists for villains, he's kind of a poor man's Obidiah Stane complete with bald head but he fits in with the student/mentor relationships explored in the film. If I was going to reach you could say he's similar to Ultron in the comics in that he both loves and hates Hank for taking him under his wing and then abandoning him. Also much like Stane, he sports a badass suit. I said it before and I'll say it again, love the Yellowjacket design.

Marvel's casting continues to be stellar with Rudd, Douglas and Lily. All of them turn in good performances and each of them had issues and traits one could identify with. Their chemistry was great and by the end they felt like a tight family. I mentioned the young Michael Douglas already but it should be stated again, the de-aging fx were superb. It'll be interesting to find out how they accomplished the effect but if I had to guess, I imagine it was something similar to how they achieved the older Peggy Carter in TWS only reversed. (And if you're like me and interested in reading how the vfx were accomplished, FXGuide.com has a great article on how they achieved the young Douglas as well as many of the film's other effects.)

Falcon's guest appearance was a fun one. It's just too bad Marvel chose to spoil it in the commercials.

Evangeline Lily is perfectly set up to become the (2nd) Wasp by the end of the film but I loved that a backstory for Janet was explored and shown briefly. The film also sets up the possibility of her return with Scott's escape from the Quantum realm planting the seeds in Hank's mind that she could still be alive and rescued.

Considering this film's loooong development history and sudden directorial change so close to production it's very surprising and allaying that it turned out as well as it did. Personally I never understood the adulation for Edgar Wright based on his previous films but you could also say the same for Peyton Reed and he turned in a solid effort. I'm sure there will now always be a debate of what Edgar's version might have been for better or worse but I feel we got a pretty damn good Ant-Man film in the end.

Go see it, spread the word! I saw it in 3D and thought it looked great, this is probably one of the few films that is perfect for a 3D experience. Looking forward to seeing it again!

Regarding the 2nd credit scene:

I'm not sure what was going on in the scene exactly. Cap and Falcon have Bucky (visibly beaten with his metal arm seemingly restrained in some sort of vice). Did Cap restrain him or did he find him like that? Whatever's happening they need Ant-Man's help and they don't want Stark involved.

I loved it. One of the tighter Marvel movies that gave me a constant smile throughout.

I don't think they were able to market Ant-Man properly, which is a shame because I think it deserves to make money. They nailed the marketing for Guardians by playing up the music and space fantasy but the message was muddled and the tone confused for the Ant-Man campaign. I might have focussed on the comedy / heist aspects to make this Marvel entry feel fresh and not seem like just another superhero flick.

The post-credit stingers: awesome.

EDIT: Also saw TFA trailer in 3D. Was awesome.
