Release on SW.com here: focusing-on-star-wars-episode-vii-lucasfilm-postpones-episodes-ii-and-iii-3d.html

This sucks, but seems understandable, given the targeted 2015 release date for EP7.

Hasbro must be shitting bricks right now. They cancelled their 2013 droid factory line to push the 3D releases in the fall.

From what I understand, Episodes II and III conversions were already done (at least EPII is).

I'm kind bummed, but in talking to some of my friends, with the thought that Episode 7 may be 2016 or later....why rush Episode II and III in today, hold them off so you can satiate the crowds, or release them in a marathon type scenario right before Episode 7 lands, build up the hype.

Best to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Sounds good to me! I hate 3D anyway, and this makes me think that they will more than likely want to try and stick with the 2015 release date.

Was kind of looking forward to the 3D, as a novelty at least before the fad (of the current formats) fades away. There are about two dozen scenes I thought would have been impressive even in the standard conversion-ist formats. But the delay here isn't going bunch up my boxers either. Seems like about fifteen minutes ago it was 2005, so whats a year or two at this point. I'm fucking old.

Cool. I'd be surprised if there isn't.

There is not a chance in hell they theatrically release any prequel trilogy film leading up to Episode VII.

Why not? Why not do all 6 of them? Even in some sort of limited run in October / November.

There's a rumour all six films are getting a digital release in early summer, but not theatrically. Possibly the 3D prequel conversions will be released as three individual sets (3d Blu-ray + 2D Blu-ray + Ultraviolet - something like that, in non-episodic movie years. Just my speculation).

Yes, Disney seems to be catering to the older fanbase. But there's also a money-making opportunity to theatrically release the conversions that Lucasfilm has essentially been sitting on these past couple years. I could see all six put out in a run up to December.
