This episode was excellent Jedi-centric storytelling. But should this series, being set when it is and the galaxy in the state that it's in, be focused on the Force and Jedi as much as it is? While I don't like projecting my own personal expectations onto the story direction dictated by others (something prequel haters are guilty of), it feels off to have Jedi and the Force be so central to Rebels' storyline.

I agree with you. While the storytelling was strong and the series has been good overall, I can't help but feel like the idea that Kanan and Ezra are communicating with Yoda cheapens the Skywalker journey. Rebels, while entertaining, kind of feels like an alternate timeline where the saga's protagonists are replaced with the Ghost's gang.

Unless Kanan, Ezra and every other known Jedi are killed by ANH "when gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be" goes from being a really heavy emotional moment to a head-shaking plot hole. That line hits the hardest when taken as is (and the music at that moment backs up that Yoda is being serious) so it would really annoy me if Filoni and co's (and apologists') logic is that Yoda wasn't being totally literal.

The PT created enough of those kinds of plot holes already and it would be a shame for this series - developed by devoted fans like Filoni - to negatively impact some of the saga's strongest moments.

Don't see why these things are so big. Yoda says he didn't notice them until they walked into the temple in the first place. It's less egrarious than "Vader killed Anakin" from Obi-Wan. He could just have lost contact and never regained it with anyone and assumed the worst. It doesn't cheapen anything if the most they do is beat some minor villains and a Dark Jedi or two.

I do know I want to see that Chopper animatronic they made in Ep. VII somewhere. :)

Don't buy it.

And Obi-wan hiding Anakin's fate from Luke is called out by the character and then explained in the same trilogy. It's a plot point, not a plot hole.

It's not a plot hole if the hole is down to viewer's personal opinions. They explained away the Vader-Anakin thing, yes. But, there's also been other issues like "no ship that small has a cloaking device" (ESB) / "ships this size don't usually carry cloaking devices" (TCW).

Luke's definitely the last Jedi trained, at least. Though it would be fun if they found a way to avoid killing off everyone else, but have them lose hope in their cause and give up against overwhelming odds, or something.

Talking about holes. You can only get a lightsaber crystal from so called "crystal caves" from the Adega system, llum and dantoonie (tcw). So when he got one in a temple I was really confused.

Nothing to say the lightsabre crystal did not originate from any of those worlds and was being stored in the Lothal temple ... may have been the possession of a padawan who never got to install it in a lightsabre, or a spare crystal that was never required. Star Wars is a greatly expanding mythology in years to come, with lots of revelations and twists and discoveries along the way. What we already know isn't all there is to know.

To be honest, the only Star Wars mythology I was particulary interested in was the George Lucas lead stories. Everything now is just sanctioned fan fiction.

It was always George Lucas' intent that other writers and directors come into the saga to take it in fresh directions, so finally he'll enjoy discovering (hopefully) what a new generation of creators brings. Star Wars was long overdue new blood, especially younger, more energetic folk with interesting outlooks on life and how SW can be taken forward. Maybe Lucas' aspiration in this matter might fall short if Disney is more concerned about playing safe, but if the first two movies are big enough box office hits, then maybe some exciting creative risks will be taken.

IMO its obvious that Ezra went through the trials the Younglings went through in TCWs "The Gathering" of Season 5 to get his and their crystals. It's obvious too that this Lothal enclave was one of the possible locations to test the students. You can see this with the 2 dead Jedi "waiting" for their Padawans to return. I dont see a plot hole there. I think this outpost storaged some crystals for the trials.

My thoughts exactly. Couldn't help but think that if they are serious about "Rebels" being canon that it cheapens the skywalker story a lot.

The action and dialogue in a film is not an opinion: it's expected to be taken as fact. It's an opinion that the audience should infer half-meanings from what's said or done on screen. You're comparing a very core narrative point with a throwaway line about technology. Not the same thing.

Here's a canonical fact: Yoda knows that Kanan and Ezra are alive and well, and training to become impactful Jedi -5 BBY.

Here's another canonical fact: Yoda says to Luke in ROTJ that he is the last of the Jedi, with the exception of "another" (the inference being that Leia is indeed the LAST hope).

THEREFORE, Kanan and Ezra must be dead by the time Yoda makes that statement, otherwise it is a PLOT HOLE. If you - the viewer - decides to make inferences on what Yoda "could" have meant, then you are trying to explain a PLOT HOLE. This isn't a throwaway line, it's a critical dramatic moment that adds weight to Luke's journey. Literally the fate of the entire galaxy is on Luke's shoulders. Had he turned to the dark side ALL would have been lost (unless of course Leia emerged, but there's nobody left to train her).

If you are suggesting that Kanan (a Jedi trained during the time of the Republic no less) and Ezra (a promising and seemingly powerful young Jedi) can be alive and well during the timeline of the OT and it not negatively impact the Episodic Star Wars story then I will respectfully but strongly disagree with you.

It might be revealed to be the case that one of the two - Kanan or Ezra - could have died before ANH, and the other no consequently longer following the Jedi Path, or even having fallen to the Dark Side, which would technically no longer make them Jedi and be excluded from Yoda's 'Last of the Jedi' speech.

Interesting... if Ezra is the same age as Luke he could most certainly be an antagonist in sequel times. We watched Anakin turn evil, so why not Ezra? And if he killed Kanan, the last of Jedi would Luke be. So tidy. There are dozens of ways to explainify and plottize this point. All I want to know is ... who cut off Savage Opress' horn - Anakin or Obi? Now THERE is a plot hole! ;-) Happy 2015 Awakens, y'all!

The odds of either of those things happening are slim for a Disney show geared towards kids.

That being said either of those outcomes would make for great Star Wars TV.

Looks like we'll get to see Billy Dee in new Star Wars after all. Looking forward to seeing Lando as a card playing scoundrel as opposed to a responsible businessman.

Looking forward to the episode. I am not sure yet how I feel about Lando being introduced before The Empire Strikes Back. Patiently waiting for a link.

Yes, thanks Max! I was not that impressed that they brought Lando into it. He will apparently be back in the future. I did however really love the sound design and the music from this episode! I really liked the blockade scene as well. What did you all think?

I think the episode captured Lando's scheming nature perfectly. However, the story seemed a little small-time for someone of Lando's stature. It's good to know that this one is just a stepping stone for other Rebels appearances.

I thought it was a nice little episode. To be frank, I'm impressed Billy Dee was able to inject so much life into Lando. It was a good performance.

Disagree that the story is too "small-time" for Lando. It's a backstory and he's basically no different than Han was when we met him in ANH. It especially works because we can see how far he's come by the time we meet him in ESB: he's gone from this small-time scam artist to a "responsible businessman."

Remember that Han is legitimately shocked (and impressed) by Lando when he sees him again on Cloud City. Before he gets to Bespin he remarks to Leia that Lando must have "conned somebody out of (the gas mine)" almost like he discounts his ability to do business legitimately. It's kind of like hearing that you're degenerate drug addict party animal friend from college became Jack Dorsey.

Unlike last week, another uneventful episode. This one was basically a 20-minute cameo of Lando...

Don't know why, but this episode seemed much more fun and packed than the Yoda one. New character, new alien, a segmented story and a bit of action - all check in my book. I hope that Lando will return for more episodes ... at least for one where he gets the Falcon.

I got this one from the 4chan thread

If anything gets taken down the Rebels thread there quickly comes up with a new upload.

Found it on YT last night.
Pretty solid ep. Billy Dee was great.
The "Villain" was a cool RMC nod, but the portrayal was a little weak, IMO.

I think we're just a little too spoiled after having so many great TCW characters like Cad Bane/Hondo/Ventress - Vizago and this new guy (whatever his name was) are just a little too "bland"

Plus, he's a bit of a pushover. Though can work better as part of a bigger organization than just being the head of something.

I agree that CW characters were far more fleshed out, but it's still early. We didn't get Bane until the end of Season 1 I think.

I'm actually hoping they put Xizor back into Canon and he pops up at some point. They should canonize a lot of SOTE.
