Ok, watched Attack the Block this weekend. Very much warmed up to Boyega now.

It still feels weird that we don't have a new generation Skywalker in this film though. Yeah, I know, Ridley is supposed to be a Solo, but Star Wars doesn't feel like Star Wars without
a young Skywalker holding a lightsaber.

In that respect, I think the EU spoiled me a bit. I was really hoping to see Luke getting a bit of a happy ending by finding (non-sisterly) love and having a child instead of being a tweaked out hobo lunatic living in a cave.

Although one glimmer of hope is that apparently Karen Gillan made a comment that she donated all of the red hair she had shaved off for Guardians of the Galaxy to the Lucasfilm guys....

That Special Edition trailer is really good. Also worthwhile:

Mr. Plinkett Reacts to The Force Awakens Trailer

The flamesaber has blown up as a meme. I saw those auxiliary blades as vents, but we'll wait and see their purpose. I'm really surprised at the derision John Boyega is getting. As a group (meaning fandom and the internet, not the cool cats at MF), are we really made up of that many racist assholes?

It's more of an internet thing than a Star Wars group thing. There are just so many assholes in the internet in general partially because its so easy to be an asshole without facing people in person.

Way too much attention is being paid to the John Boyega photoshops by the outraged. Most of the outraged are so because they want to feel morally superior and to draw attention to themselves being morally superior.

John Boyega is fine and looks fine. The issue here is the general public's first glimpse of the Sequel Trilogy (which most everyone wanted to happen) was of a Black British Stormtrooper caught at a bad camera angle, Astromechball, and the Flamesaber. The last two considered by many to be impractical in a franchise known for incorporating some realism in it's concepts.

Another issue (which also plagued the Prequels) are pre-conceived notions of what the Sequel Trilogy should be. This Trilogy will feature non-clone Stormtroopers, futuristic versions of Original Trilogy designs, and perhaps even a scenario where Luke and Adam Driver's character have formed some sort of Tea Party Militia.

Lucasfilm was extremely generous for providing a teaser a year before the film's release. Promotional photographs featuring Boyega, Astromechball, and Adam Driver's character should be released to combat any negative perceptions.

Also there is now this - The Teaser De-specialized Fan-Edit:

Things like the issue with Boyega or the new Droid/Lightsaber are reasons why I hate the internet communities sometimes! It's so easy to hate everything others created. beeing creative and creating something original without ripping of something in an established franchise is very hard. And those people seem to manage to pull that off.

What happens?! People start to complain that there are different things happening and new concepts are showed in the new stuff. It's so annoying! I really hope that LFL will NOT (!!!) listen to this crap and continuing making their thing through VIII and IX! I love those original concepts establishing something new and never before seen in this franchise which has seen SOOO MANY things in many ways, shapes and forms.

Keep it it up LFL! Dont listen to the haters...they gonna hate ANYWAY!

Lucas getting top notch performances from actors? When did this happen? I'm not a lucas hater, i like the prequels, especially episode iii, but that is by far his weakness. Visually, its hard to judge from an 88 second teaser, but that was his strength but i don't think empire missed having lucas at the chair.

Sorry, let me re-phrase: Lucas is not good with actors, not awful, but not the best. Sorry if I sounded misleading.

In regards to Empire, Lucas did everything but sit in the chair. Same with Jedi. He took the performances created by the actors and Kersh/Marquand but the visual design, tone, rhythm, composition was all Lucas from storyboards to the final mix.

LOL. Are you just trolling for fun or are you serious? You obviously need to read up on some SW books to get the inside scoop. You really dont know what your talking about.

Few thoughts:

- Now the question turns to: what's the next piece of official news / material going to be? I'm thinking we will get a few stills in the months leading up to the second trailer. Only 5 months to go.

- No production credits / logos in the trailer. I'm thinking they are going to create a "fresh" LFL logo opening (in the vein of Marvel) and christen it with Episode VII. I'm almost imaging a zoomed in version of the LFL logo where the camera pans across the letters "LUCASFILM" and there are video clips of LFL movies playing in each letter. It zooms out to reveal the popular logo and it turns from silver to gold.

Guess u might be right with both thoughts. I assume stilss of the new cast though. Classic heros will get a big reveal (or none until the movie is out!)

Lol, bet the original cast will be overjoyed with that...getting the same treatment the dinosaurs did on the 1st Jurassic Park movie. Sayin that they are about the same age as the dinos now!!!! :D

Just a quick thought from me...while the trailer looked awesome, the shots of the Falcon at the end reminded me so much of how Abrams did the same with the Enterprise on both Star Trek movies.

While this type of shot looks cool, it hasn't been filmed like that in any of the other 6 Star Wars movies, I feel that while its fresh to see new shots like that, its not in the style of Star Wars & sort of copy's what has been done in Star Trek.

I suppose its like every Michael Bay movie has an awesome car chase in it, Abrams obviously likes this type of shot in his movies. I hope I explained that clear enough...

This was my first thought as well. Then I watched the trailer 400 times and decided that it's an exhilarating shot and Star Wars is about delivering awe-inspiring visuals and thrills.

Space battles have basically looked the same for 30 years. It's time for something fresh, but in the spirit of the original style and I think that shot accomplished that.

Not to mention that there are plenty of shots in the PT that broke convention i.e. the zooms (and their unnecessary overuse) during the battle of Geonosis.

Falcon in the asteroid field, Falcon passing the medical frigate, we've seen this action shot following the Falcon in at least two of the old films.

Ones I can immediately recall:

- The first zoom is on the gunship at the start of the battle.
- Then zoom on watchtower.
- Then zoom through smoke on gunship holding Anakin and Obi-wan about 10 seconds later.

I do remember the one in the battle being a bit jarring in theaters the first time. If they had used that approach previously (like during the Battle of Naboo in Episode 1) I would have felt better about it. Seemed to be used in that movie exclusively and ultimately felt out of place.

A week later, I've come up with the theory that the "saber" in the trailer isn't a weapon. It's a key that happens to look like a laser sword. The two side "blades" are crucial components to whatever the key opens or activates.

Does this sound crazy?

Didn't the opening of Revenge of the Sith break convention as well? I seem to remember that being not too dissimilar.

It was Attack of the Clones with the pan up. The Geonosis zooms were distracting but by that point it was all kind of cartoonish anyway.

:cigar: This teaser is a little deceiving from my point of view..... so few is shown and too much is revealed.... I do hope that the plot will be consistent despite the nonsense of negating all the expanded universe :comedyscience:

I'm quite sad that His Imperial Majesty will not return in this Episode VII, perhaps on the next one who knows? :whatevaho:

My great expectation will be with the now old Skywalker. Will this stupid once farm boy understand how greatly he has been mistaken? If he turns to the Dark Side I'm sure it could be a great asset for the Sith. I'm impatient to see the rebel's traitors pay for their crimes against the Empire!

Rumour is that we will get a "teaser" for the trailer on April 14. The trailer will be released April 16 (as it premieres at Celebration).

When I first saw the trailer back in November, there was an enormous, uncanny sense of unreality for me in the first few moments of the teaser. Almost like I was watching a bizarre parody of Star Wars. This isn't to denigrate this whole Disney/Abrams-led effort, but it's a feeling like it's too good to be true and accepted. I mean, new Star Wars beyond ROTJ?! Picking up roughly where 1983 left off?! I hope that same sensation envelops my brain upon watching the new trailer when it supposedly drops in the coming week or so.

I felt exactly as you did. It was all very surreal. Unknown characters, new moving pictures taking place in the Star Wars universe, no idea what the story is about, x-wings and the Falcon in extremely hi-res. Bonkers.
