Sorry, my team was on MNF last night. I had other priorities.

I liked this one a lot. The character stuff, imperial antics, and Star Wars-style action were all done in the proper proportion. I hope there's a decent payoff with Ezra's parents.

The series ratio may be one okay episode to two good ones. I can live with that.

The Inquisitor's helmet design was great! Love how much detail they put into each episode as they progress in the series.

And the music just keeps on getting better and better! :meatwad:

This was a great episode. Finally the stakes are starting to raise and it looks like they're going to start progressing the narrative. With the Inquisitor and co. identifying and pursuing the Lothal rebels, it looks like the crew might have to finally think about going off world.

This could very well be the turning point episode of the series.

The data disc was a call back to Jedi Knight: DF2. Any reference to Jedi Knight is A-OK with me.

Someone at MakingSW.net complained there's too little variety in the extras. That's right, we're now getting complaints there's TOO LITTLE CGI in SW. The circle is complete. :(

I wondered where I remembered that from!

That was a great game I miss the days of playing it on the MSN gaming Zone dueling it out.

How is the 4chan copy? Pretty clean?

I will say hello officially. I am an older 1977 Star Wars generation fan and have been lurking on MF since the early Prequel days. Once things opened back up, I decided to finally jump in the pool. Look forward to chiming in.

Yeah, it looks pretty good, at least compared to the web streams. I must say that this show doesn't benefit that much from HD as did the Clone Wars, but hopefully in time it will. Right now the lines on walls are extremely bothersome due to their grain-like structure.

I thought it was a really great episode. The new TIE Advanced was finally on display instead of just in toy form. I am really big into the ships of Star Wars and I think it is interesting they used a design that has been around since before ROTS. The design was know as a Republic TIE.

Image

This is the original TIE fighter, that formed the basis for all of the designs the Galactic Empire would eventually use. Designed in the days when the Emperor's New Order was just beginning to take control of the Republic, the TIE was sold on the open market unlike its decendants. The orignal features a more rugged hull than the later Tie fighters, but is slower and less manueverable. The Republic TIE has duel laser cannons mounted on the chin of the command pod. Although no longer in use by the Empire, the TIE is still used by some companies and pirate groups, but is uncommon even there.

Now here is the Empire Day version:

Image

Seems almost like a straight lift in design to me. Thoughts?

Similar design for sure.

I saw this as a precursor to Vader's TIE advanced.

Here you go on DisneyXD.

Just when you think you've seen everything in the GFFA, along comes hyperspace detachment. Way cool.

I guess this episode is the season one finale. If so, I want season 2 to start soon.

Isn't season one 16 episodes?
Anyway, this episode was on another level of quality. The space battles, the force - everything was perfect. If this show is going to get better, it's hard to imagine how awesome it will be. I felt like I was watching the old trilogy again.

The shorts we saw on Youtube tally as parts of one episode, the opening televised episode as two conjoined episodes, according to Lucasfilm (I think!).

Wow; someone did a nice bit of detective work on this one:

Has A Major Clone Wars Character Already Appeared In Star Wars Rebels?

That explains why Fulcrum's voice sounds so familiar. I'd been hearing for six plus years on The Clone Wars.

Best episode of the season. It felt like I was watching a new piece of Star Wars cinema. Fantastic all the way around: Inquisitor, space battles, lightsaber fight, the Force, the characters - they were all nailed.

I also like the mystery around Fulcrum that has developed over these last few episodes. The show is getting better and the threat is starting to feel real.

Yes this 2 episode arc was handled very well. I love how easily the Inquisitor disarmed the two. The hunt should become quite entertaining now.

This was an EPIC episode. The best with Empire Day. Ezras Arc is very emotional. The handywork of this episode was outstanding. Music, Animation, Voice Acting...just outstanding.

Filoni IS the man who keeps STAR WARS alive since 2008! And he learned it from the best which is appearent in REBELS and the latest TCW Stuff!!

This episode actually blew me away. Completely made up for the less than thrilling Out Of Darkness episode a few weeks back.
Loved how Ezra was utilized in this episode - fantastic stuff. My favorite episode so far.

Did anyone notice now much Ezra's father looks like a certain TFA actor?

Image

Could Oscar Issac be playing a relative - possibly even Ezra's son? Kane Bridger (?)

This. All of this. I certainly hope that's the case as I think Oscar Isaac is yet to play his definitive role, so I'm hoping his character in EpVII has some weight/connection to other parts of the timeline.

Although I'm not actively seeking out spoilers for TFA (while at the same time I won't stamp my feet if I stumble across them), so I don't know how strong the connection might be at this point.

Per the latest Recon segment, this episode was the only mid-season finale. Good to know.

The mystery seems to be solved, but that doesn't make the character any less intriguing:

The dude's now Apocalypse - that's an exciting Kinberg connection.

Once again I totally agree with you. Just got round to watching the episode with my kids. We all loved it!

My youngest who's just turned 11 last week came up with another outlandish but highly possible idea.....he thinks Ezra might be the X-Wing pilot out of the new teaser trailer (Isaac)...if Ezra is 15 in Rebels that would make him middle to late 40's in The Force Awakens. He came up with this as he's read that some of the things that are shown in Rebels will make an appearance in the new movie...then thought that Ezra might have laid low for some reason or other until the time was right....after his training was as far as it could go with Kanan & he needed a new master (Luke) to complete it...he might be onto something there...

My kid worked it out that its 5 years between A New Hope to Return of the Jedi, then add 30 years for The Force Awakens....I thought that would make Ezra roughly in his late forties....Luke & Leia were 18 in A New Hope so that makes them roughly 53ish....so yeah he'd be about the same age....

"I felt personally to keep Yoda as this disembodied thing it would confuse the audience less," says executive producer Dave Filoni, who also directed the installment. "I didn't want you to think Yoda could be teleporting from planet to planet."

It helped that Filoni was directing an actor so closely associated with one sci-fi's most beloved characters. "What's great about Frank, by keeping the voice very present and active, you do feel that it's a watchfulness and that he's speaking to you from afar," he says. "And I didn't want anyone to think that he had left Dagobah [the planet where Yoda first trains Luke Skywalker]. It was on the outer rim of what we do, but I think we were able to pull it off."

Star Wars fans will notice several homages to the lore, including The Empire Strikes Back and the final episodes of The Clone Wars. "This is show is meant to fit in with everything that's going on: Clone Wars, features, novels," Filoni says. "We do a lot of work to make sure there's continuity between these things now."

I don't know, given the character and its state during this time period, it seems like a shoehorned idea.

I'm starting to think you're onto something. I don't see why they'd ask Oz and not Tom Kane who would have provided MORE consistency with respect to how Yoda sounds in animation. Remember that they didn't ask Ewan McGreggor to voice Obi-wan in the opening episode, so maybe Yoda and Vader do have some kind of presence in Episode VII.

Then again, Liam Neeson and Pernilla August did voice their characters in Clone Wars...but there were never actors that had established their characters in animation.

This episode is up at the XD site. In some ways, this episode is the Rebels counterpart to the Clone Wars episode Voices. Here, Frank OZ subs for Liam Nesson in amazing fashion. The way that Kanan and Ezra are being developed as characters is pretty wonderful.

Regarding the music, it seems as if Kiner is finally being allowed to be himself rather than a parrot of Williams.

For the stories they are trying to tell, the series' budget is starting to affect the series. The episodes already felt too contrived to Lothal, now there is an hidden Jedi temple there as well?

I think this board is a bit off-center. From what I hear elsewhere, it's the best in the series and I kinda agree with that.
It's more akin to Luke's training on Dagobah than anything we've seen in either tv series so far.
There's elements of the surrealism of Mortis, elements from the Yoda arc in TCW, some nice Jedi lore.
I loved Frank Oz's cameo and that it didn't make Yoda out to have omnipresent abilities, just contacting people at places that are strong in the Force.
The McQuarrie wall-tiles were also great.

Good episode, enjoyed it.
To be fair to Tom Kane, he does a great Yoda, but he's nowhere near Frank Oz...the true master....Yoda has never sounded better. Hats of to Frank for returning another time.
Ezra's lightsaber hilt reminded me of the first control leaver from the tractor beam control that Kenobi disabled while on the Death Star.

all in all im loving the series so far...looking forward to 2015 with more Rebels & The Force Awakens! Its gonna be a great year!!!!

I agree as well. This episode was the best executed, most well written, and deepest one so far.

A new interview with Frank Oz about Yoda is below.

Q. What was your initial reaction to Yoda when you viewed the concept sketches for the character in 1979?

A. When I saw the first sketches they were different from the Yoda we now know. But still, I sensed who he was right away. That rarely happens, but it happened with him.

Q. Do you remember what George Lucas said to you to inspire you to come up with the voice that you chose for Yoda?

A. Actually George didn’t ask me to do the voice. I gave him a voice tape early on but I was told he wanted to try other people doing the voice. Over the year or so while post was going on, I would hear that many men were auditioned for Yoda’s voice. But at the last minute, when I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii with my first wife, I got a call that George would like to use my voice after all. So we shortened the honeymoon and I went to LA to record Yoda for EMPIRE. But to answer your question, I studied old men’s voices.

Q. You reportedly created your own personal backstory for Yoda in 1979 to help you get into character. Is that true? Do you still have those notes?

A. I may have them deep in storage…somewhere. The content was about Yoda’s history. His likes and dislikes. How he came to be on Dagobah. How Jedi behaved hundreds of years ago, etc. And also the notes included what Yoda knew about various people. What he knew about Luke, what he knew about Princess Leia, what he knew about Han Solo, and what he knew about Darth Vader. What he knew about all the characters impacted by the Force. I had asked George early on in the rehearsal period of The Empire Strikes Back, to let me have the whole script instead of having just my scenes. I felt if Yoda was so wise I needed to know what was going on throughout the script so Yoda could sense it all.

Q. You’ve created so many wonderful characters over the years—how difficult or easy was Yoda compared to others you’ve created?

A. Creating characters is really not about one person. Yoda was designed by someone, built by someone, costumed by someone, described and had dialogue written by someone (George and Lawrence Kasdan), and directed by Kersh (Director, Irvin Kershner). What I do is take all the elements, plus what’s inside me, and bring them to life with, hopefully, a transformational and transcendent result. That’s what happens with all the characters I’ve originated.

As I said I sensed who Yoda was right away when I saw the sketches, but what was different with Yoda is that he was not performing for an audience. I had to have him truthful to the script. And the major physical difference was that I had to have three people working him with me – all needing to be in exact sync with each other. That was really the challenging part – but the fun part too.

Q. How does it feel to be reprising the voice of Yoda for Rebels after nearly ten years?

A. It was wonderful to be him again.

Q. How did you like working with Dave Filoni, EP/Supervising Director of Star Wars Rebels?

A. Dave was great. He “got it.” We worked well together.

Q. What is your favorite Yoda line from the Star Wars movies?

A. I don’t really have a favorite. Although I liked reaching for the gravitas when Yoda says to Luke, “You will be. You will be,” after Luke says he’s not scared. I love opposites in characters. At first glance, Yoda is an impish character, butwhen he speaks of anything having to do with the Force he becomes profoundly serious. That paradox is interesting tome. One doesn’t expect that kind of gravitas from a character that small and impish.

This was an excellent episode, but one I am conflicted on. Actually I feel somewhat conflicted about the series.

This episode was excellent Jedi-centric storytelling. But should this series, being set when it is and the galaxy in the state that it's in, be focused on the Force and Jedi as much as it is? While I don't like projecting my own personal expectations onto the story direction dictated by others (something prequel haters are guilty of), it feels off to have Jedi and the Force be so central to Rebels' storyline.

I envisioned the between ROTS-ANH era as one of oppression, blind obedience to authority and a dirty, gritty existence for many of the galaxy's inhabitants. Jedi and the Force have been snuffed out. Maybe there's one around a corner there, hidden under a cloak, or another one doing odd jobs, trying to hide in plain sight, much like what Kannan was doing in "A New Dawn."

I really did like this episode. The animation and storytelling were top-notch. The Mortis and Yoda arcs were my favorite from TCW, and this called back to those themes. But my feeling is that the less Force and Jedi stuff in the series, the truer it is to the era.
