I don't think Darth Vader should have any part in this beyond being referenced. The trilogies were not always "his" story. Continue with the Skywalker dynasty, make it "rhyme" if you will, but the Vader chapter is over.

There's a quote from a 1980 Bantha Tracks interview where Lucas was asked about the third trilogy of films -

"It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his adventures."

- which quite a few people (retrospectively) presumed refered to what we now know as Episode III, when it is more likely Lucas was simply refering Episode VI as "Star Wars III - ie the as yet unnamed third Star Wars film" given the date and context of the question, IMHO...
Makes sense to me he was simply talking about Luke.

This quote maybe...?

"The next trilogy - the first one - [will be] about Ben Kenobi as a young man. Luke ends up in the third film at just three-and-a-half years old. The first trilogy will not be as much of an action adventure thing. Maybe we'll make it have some humor, but right now it's much more humorless than this one. [Episodes 4-6] is where all the excitement is, which is why I started there. The other ones are a little more Machiavellian - it's all plotting - more of a mystery. I think we'll try, on the next series of films, to write all three scripts at once."

From the collection of quotes from previous interviews published in Starlog #120, the Star Wars 10th anniversary special from July 1987.

Debunking the Jaina-Jacen Solo casting by Drew @ HitFlix:

Quote:
More importantly, though, the process that is underway with Michael Arndt writing the film involves a number of other voices all thinking about how to further expand the universe of the movies.

Simon Kinberg, Lawrence Kasdan, and voices you aren't even aware of yet are all contributing to the conversation, and they are not sitting there as a group taking notes on stories that were told in book form. They did not walk into the situation handcuffed to the idea of just adapting something. The people that have signed on have signed on so that they can take advantage of the freedom of a wide-open universe, and they are working to build something that you don't expect, something that does something new.

I'm being careful here because I don't want to make the same mistakes I've made in the past, dropping casual revelations of information that would spoil things early. And while I'm not going to tell you my sources, my track record with both Abrams films and "Star Wars" films more than speaks for itself.

I can just tell you that they hired people to dream big, and this rumor is about as far from "dreaming big" as you can get. This rumor is 100% fabricated, and when 2015 rolls around, you'll get an idea of just how completely they're leaving the already-existent books behind.

You want to know something cool and genuine about the new film? vWork on the major set pieces has already begun at ILM, and this is going to end up being the most elaborate physical build they've done for the effects team since "Return Of The Jedi," something I look forward to discussing with John Knoll when I see him at the "Pacific Rim" press day.

While I approve that they don't go with the EU, that quote has me a little worried that George isn't as involved as I thought (story wise).

Good for Drew for puncturing this so quickly (because there's a ton of SW fans who'll eagerly eat shit off of any plate they're served), and good for him for saving his career and becoming quasi-respectable by getting far away from Harry Knowles' freakshow of a website.

Turns out that wasn't the script to Episode 7. Bad Robot legitimately thought people cared about any other script they have coming out soon. Or else they purposely wanted to yank our cranks.

I would apply a proper grain of salt to this, but this made me stand up and take notice.

J.J. Abrams could drop out of directing E7? If so, what on earth will Disney tell its Investors (who ponied up a lot of the $4 billion to buy LFL) then?

The entire recent discussion is why my gut feeling keeps coming back to the idea that Episode 7 isn't necessary, and is very likely to undercut the end of Return of the Jedi in a way that will piss a lot of fans off, rightfully so.

I feel like the only chance Ep. 7 has a chance to really succeed is to sort of "reset" with new characters and a new story arc, separate from the Skywalker family. Palpatine/Sidious was THE ultimate evil of all time. That's what made ROJ so satisfying. The ultimate good defeated the ultimate evil. Where do you go from this point? I feel like anything involving the characters from Ep. 1-6 is akin to fitting a square peg into a round hole. Just don't see how it works.

Don't get me wrong, I am very curious to see what happens and I *want* it to succeed. I'm just struggling with *how* it's going to succeed, if it continues the tale of the Skywalker family post-ROJ.

I'm excited as hell for Episode VII, but I'm struggling mightily with where it's going to go and why it's going to be necessary.

If anyone can crack the code, it's probably Arndt / Abrams but ROTJ closes on such a perfect note that we're going to need something jarringly compelling to make this sequel trilogy worth while.

Indy IV felt completely and utterly unnecessary and basically ruined what was a fitting end to a great trilogy. The worst that can happen isn't that Episode VII feels like the worst of the prequels; it's that it resembles Indy IV.

Latest rumour is that Disney is thinking of pushing Episode VII to December 2015 to give it healthy distance from the Avengers.

It would feel strange for Star Wars not to be a spring/summer blockbuster.

December makes sense from a merchandising standpoint. Al least, it's not a midwinter release like the SE's and TPM 3D.

CoGro wrote:

The big difference between Episode VII and Indy IV is that Lucas was aware of Episode VII while he was making the OT and Indy IV came to him long after The Last Crusade was in the can. He knew where the story was going after ROTJ while he was making ROTJ.

Personally, I don't think any of the Raiders sequels lend themselves to a natural ending for Indy's character.

Umm, maybe I'm fucking stupid or something. But if I was investing in Disney stock, I don't think I'd be upset that they had two hugely anticipated films in the theatre at the same time. I don't think I'd release them on the same weekend, but I don't see how they would even 'compete' per se. Juggernaut on the quarterly earnings statement is not a bad thing.

Loosing money on "Captain Jack as a Fictitious Native-ish American-ish Sidekick" is a bad idea. Massively bloodletting your practically guaranteed audience in a three or four week span isn't a bad idea. You just have to do it right. I do charge for consultations but they should hit me up :whatevaho:

Palpatine has no place in my new republic, I mean Star Wars. Red Sith force ghosts? Oh my fucking god no, please, no.

Hows about a purple Nick Fury force-ghost crossover dueling a Darth Maul ghost that can split in two and come at you from both angles. And a time machine, so that I can go back in time and murder my parents before they create me so I don't have to live through that shit. That is some Saturday morning cartoon shit right there. I still have faith that they will come up with something more original.

And why do we need such a deep rooted connection to the past anyway? Do we need to use Palpatine as the ultimate 'evil' forever, or Kenobi to tie us into the philosophical core of the Star Wars universe if we have Luke freaking Skywalker all old and sage-like filling that role already? Do they not have any good ideas that don't recycle all of that?

Hope so, time will tell.

Watching the ESB trailer again ... how cool would it be to have a teaser like that, with weird new concept art from SW7?

Just about anything would be exciting at this point, however I'd be much more jazzed about a trailer along those lines, as opposed to something like the Avengers 2 teaser.

Strap yourselves in, we're about to launch into hyperspace with some HUGE news, and Jedi News brings you it first and exclusively. Let us repeat that, this is confirmed and official - these are all FACTS!

Attendees of the European Brand Licensing Show were given this brochure, and within the magazine was this page detailing Disney's plans for the next two years.

Via the image sent to us by Scruffy Bothan (you'll notice we've highlighted the relevant news) we learn of the arrival of classic LEGO games on mobile platforms in Spring/Summer 2014, a digital library launching in Autumn/Winter 2014, and the continued confirmation that the release of Episode VII is Spring/Summer 2015 but keep reading for the most surprising and exciting news...

This is a page from the Disney brochure given out to the attendees of the European Brand Licensing Show. This is the detailed current calendar plan from Disney for the Star Wars brand. Plenty of little bits of info that will stir much debate and discussion:

Star Wars Mobile LEGO games following on from successful app releases of the Batman and Harry Potter platform ports. Coming in Spring / Summer 2014.
A Star Wars Digital Library is to launch in Autumn / Winter 2014.

Confirmation that the plan remains for Star Wars Episode VII to be released in the Spring / Summer of 2015.
But perhaps the most surprising, exciting and fast approaching news is the release of “Darth Vader Themed TV Specials.”

Darth Vader TV Specials - most impressive! Now that you have been able to digest that incredible news, what does it all mean? Our very own Jedi Master SQL will give you his inside take from behind his impenetrable firewall on the Holonet here on Jedi News later.

I would imagine the "Darth Vader TV Specials" mentioned here have something to do with the "Rebels" series.

We're going to get something, that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a video with J.J. Abrams followed by a very brief teaser with some concept art cut to the theme (I'm thinking something along the lines of the Empire teaser).

Has anyone else noticed that all of the teasers that have been posted on the You Tube channel were sourced from pretty low-fi materials? I haven't broken out the 2004 OT box set in a while but I'm 90% certain that all of the teasers that have been posted recently are on that set and in higher quality; could just be rose tinted glasses on my part though.

That was actually in the back of my mind before I posted!

It would probably get some attention from the blogs and what not being that the teaser was released what, 15 years ago now and basically kicked off the trend of watching trailers online before any sort of real infrastructure was in place to facilitate that kind of demand.

It'd be even better if they just posted one of those crappy cam videos just for nostalgia's sake.

If that's the case, no way they make the summer 2015 release window now. I know some people will be cooing about that (like Devin Faraci over at Bad Ass Digest) but it's not like Disney/LFL will be missing some major, important milestone or anniversary if they don't make that date.

Wow this is getting interesting. How is Star Wars still the most fascinating franchise in terms of hype?

Star Trek? Marvel films? cast announcements, plot twists evident from day one, etc. etc. Star Wars? cryptic dispatches from "insiders" that start Spoiler Wars

I'm more eager to see the spoiler/spy reports play out over the course of a year or two than for the actual new Episodes.
