A forum member who attended the February 9 concert of Williams conducting the Young Musician’s Foundation Debut Orchestra reports on the following comment by the maestro before conducting the Star Wars theme:

“We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”

JJ "confirms" that Williams is handling the score. "Apparently, he was there long before I was".

Saw this news and it gave me a sigh of relief.

In that same video, JJA also says that nothing has been set in stone yet.

I think we can count on it ever since Williams confirmed he wanted to do it.

John Williams confirmed for Ep. VII ! Worth staying up 'til 5:30am for:
John Williams official for Ep.7
:chewbacca: :chewbacca: :chewbacca:

edit: starwars.com changed the contents of the liveblog of KK's appearance--it originally said that he'd committed to the "next trilogy", now it just says "Episode 7"--but other people who were there heard "the next trilogy"--maybe they changed it because contracts aren't signed?

I'm pleasantly surprised by this. Not that I didn't think John Williams would be interested, but that Disney wanted him, and that he has the energy to do so. The man is over 80 years old now. Very thankful he's going to be part of Ep. 7!

He has previously expressed interest on doing it, so...

Great news! He seems to be in good shape for an octogenarian, and there have been other composers/conductors who have worked well into their 90's. Elliot Carter, who died at the age of 103 last year, comes to mind.

Also, Williams could easily score this and have his other colleagues or helpers work on orchestrations, conducting rehearsals, etc. Being over 80 is a non-issue, imo.

My concern was not so much Williams' desire to do it, but his ability to do it. Hope he continues to have good health for many years to come. Williams is as essential part of Star Wars as any other person or idea, IMO. His involvement alone makes me more interested in Ep. 7 than I otherwise would have had.

Good to finally get the official word about Williams' return.

I think it's really important to note the wording in Lucasfilm's official statement. Williams is confirmed to return just for Episode VII at the moment, not the entire sequel trilogy or further movies. I really think his involvement will be limited just to this movie. We may see him write some additional themes for the other movies but that's about it. I expect Episode VII will largely be about transition, in more ways than one.

According to those in attendance at Celebration Europe today, Kathleen Kennedy said in a video that John Williams was on board to score ALL 3 of the sequel films. Tweet about it came from @swactionnews at 10:35 this morning.

I watched the "liveblog" on starwars.com as it was happening, and it definitely did say something to the effect of "the next trilogy" or "the next 3 Star Wars movies" before being changed within a few minutes (since I had to keep refreshing the page to get new entries) to just saying "Episode 7".

In other news, the next SW Celebration was announced for April 16-19, 2015 in Anaheim, CA--moving it back to April totally seems to suggest that Ep. VII will come out sometime in May, 2015.

Didn't have much doubt he would be back but good to have confirmation.

D23 can't come fast enough. Throw us a bone, Disney.

Until we get something official that says otherwise it's all hearsay at this point. I'm going off the official word that's up on starwars.com.

I'm glad Celebration is coming back to the west coast in 2015. I was already making plans to hit up the next Celebration, the fact that it's basically in my backyard only sweetens the deal.
