"Lucas Clarifies His Role As "Consultant" On The New STAR WARS Trilogy"

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ ... s/?a=70830

Another shitty article that can't help itself from needlessly bashing the Prequels. But there is one kind of interesting quote that confirms what Spielberg said:
"As for those recent reports about Steven Spielberg helming Episode VII, Lucas was also quick to dismiss the idea, stating: "I’m pretty sure he’d never want to do that!""

I've read articles saying that Lucas is involved with the movie development but I can't get a clear idea of just how involved? Is it purely advisory with no real authority and just a courtesy that JJ consults with him? Does his being the creator carry enough authority to give him a veto type power without contractually him having it?

I don't pretend to know anything about filmmaking, I just know I do or do not like something, and with JJ I have felt both ways. What are your guys opinions about his writing and filming style and how it might or might not be a good fit for these prequels?

Kathy Kennedy said this just a few days ago:

Quote:
George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, episode seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created.

There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it’s a roadmap that George made pretty clear.

My take is that George is what they've said he is: a highly respected story consultant and author of the outline they're broadly following for Episodes VII-IX. I don't think he has final say on anything anymore, and he's cool with that - if he wanted that power he wouldn't have sold the company.

Based on George's past feelings on the matter, I do suspect he did retain some sort of final cut clause for his movies. i.e. the OT and the PT, but that's just speculation on my part.

In the end, Disney and Lucasfilm will respect what he has done before and will listen carefully to his advice on what is and isn't "Star Wars", but it will be just that - advice.

I just don't like the double talk in regards to canon.

So you want folks to be excited bout these movies, but they may not even be canon...

I think you are misinformed. Everything created with the name "Star Wars" on it from here on out.... is Canon.

and they are evaluating past items to determine if they are canon- (In what form that info will be released to the public, i do not know)

the article below is from a few weeks ago and is the best source of understanding on the topic.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-576 ... ory-group/

the news from a couple days ago was rehashed poorly quoted movie blog garbage, those garbage articles have been popping up more and more often recently and its so irritating. These movie sites are afraid someone will post news before them (news that they are already reposting because they never do any research) and they blindly post stuff without making sure it is accurate. And then people take that trash as fact and everyone is misinformed.

There's a lot of Star Wars stuff out there, and there's a lot of stuff that contradicts other Star Wars stuff.
The bottom line is - "canon" isn't someone's attempt to tell a story, it is someone's attempt to make sense of stories that have already been told.
However much they big up the importance of Chee and Hidalgo, ultimately the films dictate what they do - not the other way round.
At the end of the day, if you enjoy a story, you enjoy a story whether it is considered canon or not.

So long as the films don't contradict the other films. With these sequels they've got pretty much a free rein to do whatever they want to do in a narrative sense - they should just get on with it. I'd like to think their research is coming from watching the six existing movies rather than thumbing through Timothy Zahn or Dark Empire...

This is what I'm referring to:

Quote:
"The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that [George Lucas] created. ... There is no attempt being made to carry characters [from the standalone films] in and out of the saga episodes,"

This is Kathleen Kennedy talking about the the various products coming up.

This is the same type of talk that George used to describe the games, books, comics, movies, tv shows, and we all know that not all canon is created equal, and only what george finally graced with his stamp of approval he considered real, which created a lot of heartburn for star wars fandom in the past. Until they show signs of this changing, their new "canon decision" group or not, I find it hard to get excited for things that aren't just the sequel movies.

Tread, I understand where you are coming from, but there are great many stories out there that i would love to see on the big screen. I was completely over-joyed to see Aalya Secura in the movies....loved the Republic Series.

JJ Abrams has revealed that he thinks there’s a ‘purity’ in keeping details about Star Wars Episode 7 secret. The director is notoriously secretive about his projects and the new Star Wars film is no exception. Talking about keeping Benedict Cumberbatch’s identity a secret in Star Trek Into Darkness, he told The Daily Telegraph: ‘Star Wars is in every way a different animal. It’s always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I’ve been used to, so I’m sure there’ll be some sort of compromise.
‘But it feels to me like there’s a purity in not knowing every little thing.’
JJ described how even his staff were going to extraordinary lengths to maintain his privacy. He said: ‘My office… I’m working on the Star Wars script today and the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. ‘I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing.’ He added: ‘It seems rather extreme.’
