Rationalization stage: Actually all of these changes make perfect sense when you think about it. They were bound to happen one way or another.

You forgot the crucial part of rationilization "WAH!!! THEY'RE GEORGE'S MOVIES, HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS TO THEM...IN FACT, HE'S MAKING THEM BETTER!"

So let's all take a deep breath - there seems to be growing feelings around the net that these are fakes where are we on that? Is it at all conceivable that this is all BS?

The uploader is in this thread and goes by "adywan"

The audio came from this thread and is sourced from the BluRay

There is now actual video from the BluRay because the BluRayRips are now online.

Forgive this question but: does this mean the footage is real or fake?

So, that's where that dog thing was, right? This just gets weirder and weirder. Not Sebulba, I don't think, it's a different costume isn't it? More like the Dug from AotC. Kinda sad for me, I was going to show my oldest son the complete saga when the Blu's hit, as he hasn't seen RotS yet, but I'll be damned if I'm supporting this release, this is just finally too far.

It's going to be the first time EVER that I've not owned a copy of the movies in a new format, from beta all the way through the DVDs.

You mean Obi-Wan? I thought that too and it's possible but most dugs look alike. To me it looked the same dug that we see in a few scenes later in Dex's diner.

That is the truth, my friend. While the commentary in this thread has degenerated quickly, one can understand the knee-jerk reactions. R2 hiding behind rocks for absolutely no reason? CGI minions invading Jabba's palace for, again, no reason? Aesthetic effects that were brought upon by restoring the film to a new "color space" are glaringly ignored. It's not hard to be disappointed.

I remember something about the Dug in AOTC, I think it was from the commentary, where someone (John Knowles maybe? Or Rob Coleman?) said it's not Sebulba. Yeah, no reason it couldn't be, but whatever.

ON the subject of real vs. fake, I'm hoping against hope, but in my heart I know these are real. Just look at Wickett's unholy eyes, no one would go to the trouble of hoaxing that. Is it do-able on home based software? Absolutely. Would there be any reason at all to do it? Doubtful as it would no doubt be revealed as fake shortly.

These also line up with what I was kinda wondering about since the first confirmed BR screencaps started coming out - while we've got a brighter image, that's ALL we've got. To clarify, the files have just had a gamma boost, and this is not representative of a larger contrast ratio, just someone moving the middle levels. That all leads to light, washed-out looking video, which is what these look like.

I need commentary from LFL on these changes that doesn't include the words "George's vision."

I'm flabbergasted and in need of answers. It's harder for me to be a Star Wars fan today than it was yesterday.

Matt Wood's a real fan? Nice mix on that ROTS Vader scream. You earned yourself an instant bust in the Star Wars pantheon of crapolla between Jar Jar Binks and 'Han Shooting First'.

Could these "leaks" somehow be PRE-check discs? I hope? Anyway, here's my thoughts on the first MKV. I watched on my HD LCD widescreen computer monitor.

Still not fixed....

Star Wars

01. Still has 1954 recording of 20th Century Fox Fanfare
02. Both R2 jump-cuts in the Blockade Runner hallway still there.
03. Vader's chest box lights still not working in several shots.
04. Jawa's eyes look almost red from the artificial dimming of the scene.
05. Inside the Jawa Sandcrawler is almost too dark to see anything.
06. SE Sandtroopers and Dewbacks still look like 1997 effects.
07. SE Obi-Wan's home still looks fake.
08. SE Ronto's still look like 1997 effects.
09. SE Cantina aliens still look like 1997 effects.
10. The Han Greedo scene now has them both shoot at the SAME TIME, and there is still a freeze-frame there that throws off the scene.
11. Jabba scene is still there from the 2004 DVD.
12. Slooooow Millennium Falcon flyby from Tatooine.
13. After Han says "I know a few maneuvers....", it's still the old static shot of the Falcon NOT making any maneuvers.
14. Luke still has green saber blade.
15. "I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion" followed by Vader's hand gesture still there.
16. Falcon cockpit window still incorrect.
17. Spacetroopers and laser cannons still sloppily matted.
18. Old monitor graphics still there in Death Star control room.
19. Breakaway door in detention center still not fixed.
20. Death Star chasm matte painting still not fixed.
21. Jump-cut Obi-Wan lightsaber blade on the Death Star still there.
22. Millennium Falcon vs. Sentry TIE's, there is still an X-Wing flyby sound during the battle.
23. Still no "wormhole tunnel" out the cockpit window during the "They're tracking us" chat.
24. 1970's monitors and graphics still on Yavin 4.
25. Jumps between 1970's models and 1997 effects still there.

Changes noticed:

01. Escape pod launcher lights now have heat trails over them, making them flicker.
02. Escape pod hatch is no longer blue.
03. More moisture vaporators added.
04. Leia hologram now looks more blue and prequelish.
05. Treadwell droid behind Uncle Owen while talking at the table (Was this there before?).
06. Binary sunset still has the passing clouds added.
07. The area beneath the Landspeeder actually looks GOOD.
08. As pointed out by Adywan, there are now rocks in front of R2 in his hiding spot in the canyon.
09. If you thought the DVD version of Obi-Wan's Krayt Dragon roar was hideous, keep your thumb on the Mute button. That's right. It's WORSE now.
10. The new CG rocks that covered R2 are magically gone after he comes out of hiding.
11. 2004 detention center hallway still there and actually looks good.
12. Obi-Wan/Vader duel on Death Star lightsaber blades are bright and more consistent, though Vader's is a bit pink in some of the shots.
13. Millennium Falcon vs. Sentry TIE's, the shot that was revealed to us by LFL at the press event with the partial laser bolt IS FIXED in this MKV.
14. Brass can now be heard during X-Wing dive to the Death Star.
15. The glitch under Vader's TIE and his escorts after "Three marks at two-ten!" has been fixed.
16. Energy wave sound from Death Star explosion sounds more balanced.
17. Vader's breath sound can be heard when his TIE is spinning, but is very faint.

I'm too cross-eyed now to look at Empire. I'll look later once I rest my eyeballs.

That's it, right there, put a fork in the "real/fake" debate. The fix was only revealed recently, and lasers are a pain to match to what was hand-done and already existed in the shot. These are real, guys.

Thanks, User897. And thanks for the clips, duke.

Here's ady's quick review of empire:

[hr]
Well just watched ESB. No changes that i could spot other than the Wampa arm. Same old crappy 2004 colouring with the blown out detail in the bright areas in Cloud city.

They haven't touched one lightsabre by the looks of things although i would have to run it side by side with the 2004 version to confirm it, but i'm 99% sure that this is the case. Same dull cores and pink lightsabres.

The audio is the same as 2004. the lightsabre sound is still there as Luke exits the cave, yet the lightsabre is still activated.

you can still see the garbage mattes, especially during the asteroid chase.

Yeah, but I liked the old carbon thawing effect. It's not so much a matter of judging these changes on their own individual merits (even though they all seem pretty appalling to me) it is more a case of were they even needed in the first place?

Okay, just to reiterate - I don't actually consider there is anything that needs "fixing". The jump cuts don't bother me, the spinning reflective tube lightsabers with little or no colour never bothered me, and the matte boxes never bothered me. These are films made 30 years ago. They should represent that.

Otherwise what is the point - we may as well go back and replace all of Ray Harryhausen's work with CGI while we are at it. If the team working on these really had to change some stuff, aside from correcting the blunders that have been made since the late 90s, these are the kinds of things they could have spent the last three years addressing. But no, what disappoints me is that they clearly spent those past three years pissing around.

Where can we put a Dug in ROTJ, that'd be cool? Let's put some rocks in front of Artoo. What if the gate to Jabba's Palace was, like, totally massive - like, even more massive than it was before? What if Vader shouted "nooooooo!" again like he did in ROTS? Awesome. Let's give the Ewok creepy eyes that stare vacantly off into the middle distance. How long have we got left to finish this thing now? Three weeks? Shit, we'd better start doing the audio mix, and touch up a few of those lightsaber shots the fans complained about.

Give me one good reason why there needs to be a Dug on a step in Jabba's palace? One reason that isn't - well, because we saw Dugs in the prequel films, and if we put the same species in the other episodes, then it enriches the environment in which these films take place and links the films together. There isn't another reason. There can't be.

And it is a very poor reason, because there are already Grans, and Quarren, and Niktos, and Ishi Tibs, and Aqualish and countless other species from Jabba's palace featured in the prequels. So then the reason for putting a Dug in there actually translates as - what computer-generated species UNIQUE to the prequels can we add in there... because we can.

Whoa, Treadwell, I didn't say I thought any of this was good news, I just said I think they've improved the colour timing, and the effect is pretty good; it's not intrusive, it's not radically different, and the original was pretty shitty anyways.

If there's GOT to be changes, this kind of stuff is what I'd vote for. As for the rest, no, it's all bullshit (and the dug looks like crap composited in there - very shoddy) that is totally needless.
I am still VERY curious as to why the PT is not dropping. We're still only seeing stuff that could conceivably be hoaxed, once we see the wider framing on TPM we'll have a 100% on these as the real thing.

Yes, it's very confusing. And as I asked yesterday, the shot of Luke's saber being corrected to blue on the MF was not true?

The official screenshot is fake? Really hard to believe:

I think people are complaining because they literally only fixed that one shot and not others.

As Ady posted:

Personally, my stance on the whole green saber thing is rather radical. I couldn't give a fuck, really.

I am already suspending my disbelief that a beam of light can be a sword, them being a slightly different hue from one scene to the next doesn't for a second flip me out of the narrative or stop me suspending my disbelief that these things could actually work in the first place.

The sabers in ANH always looked different to the rest of the saga anyway. It's totally moot to me. No, the saber issues in and of themselves have never bothered me one jot. But what the current colour issues represent, what they are the product of - a complete lack of care, basically - does bother me, I guess.

My three year old came into my studio last night and asked "Daddy, why are you crying." Just plain sad.

This is totally surreal. Truthfully, after sleeping on this and waking up feeling totally disillusioned: I propose a march on Skywalker Ranch with a ceremonial dumping of all Star Wars 21st century laser media in the middle of the fucking road.

I never thought for one instant that I would be considering the cancellation of my pre-order. Thirty plus years of fucking loyalty - hundreds of thousands of dollars on star wars schwag bought by mom and dad and myself. The "14 years of tinkering" special edition crap. The god damn prequels- which over the years I convinced myself, that they were just not meant for my generation and accepted it.

I really believe the post 1985 motto in the lucasfilm inner circle is along the lines of "it doesn't matter if its bad." Some will put the date at 1981-2 with the exodus of gary kurtz. I'm thinking about Matt Wood who puts on a game face and assures the press at the pre-screening event "to not worry" and the "we're fans too" schtick. (not direct quotes just gave off that vibe) God damnit.

This is even ruining fucking clone wars for me. I don't want to just end up accepting this. I feel like such an asshole buying this thing now. They keep diminishing the avant garde in the classic films. Why the fuck would you do that?

Yeah, I agree with you 100% there, but still my brain hurts

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but here's where I am coming from:

I liked the prequels. I even defended some of the narrative issues people had with them back in the day. There's no defending Jar Jar Binks though. I hated the SE alterations, but never felt the need to bang on and on about them online. I disliked the 2004 additions too, but still never put myself in the "I demand the originals, NOW" camp. But this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

That Lucasfilm has now had (at the very least) seven years of fans bittching about specific mistakes they made with the colour correction. And they have said they have taken some of these issues on board.
And frankly, they haven't. Or they have, but have been satisfied with a half-assed job addressing those concerns.

Which, in itself doesn't bother me too much, but that fact coupled with everything that has come before - added to the fact that they have spent time, effort and money on making Ewoks blink, adding a Dug to Jabba's palace, putting random rocks in front of Artoo etc is just too much. They could have put all that effort into better correcting real issues they definitely knew about, rather than creating new problems.

It is just too much now. They are genuinely pissing around. Having fun with computers when they should be doing something more productive, something more in line with the PRESERVATION project the special editions were originally meant to be. It's just been downhill from there really.

It's sad - I've never felt this disappointed by a SW release since the CGI goofery of 1997 first reared its ugly head. In fact, I feel more disappointed because, as I said, all these things are stacked up on top of one another, and at least in 1997 there was the thrill of a theatrical release, however butchered the movies were.
