Official Plot Synopsis:
Green Lantern

'Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”).

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Campbell directs “Green Lantern” from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.

The film also stars Blake Lively (upcoming “The Town,” TV’s “Gossip Girl”) as the spirited Carol Ferris, a test pilot and the heir apparent to her father’s aviation company; Peter Sarsgaard (“An Education,” “Flightplan”) as scientist Dr. Hector Hammond; Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes”) as Sinestro, Jordan’s powerful mentor in the Green Lantern Corps; Jay O. Sanders (“Revolutionary Road”) as Carl Ferris, Carol’s aircraft designer dad; Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Abin Sur, Jordan’s alien predecessor; Taika Waititi (TV’s “The Flight of the Conchords”) as flight navigator Tom Kalmaku, Hal’s good friend and confidante; Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as enigmatic government scientist Amanda Waller; and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as Hector’s influential father, Senator Robert Hammond.

The film is being produced by Donald De Line (“The Italian Job”) and Greg Berlanti (upcoming “Life As We Know It”). Herbert W. Gains and Andrew Haas serve as executive producers. Geoff Johns and Lucienne Papon are co-producing.

The film’s behind-the-scenes creative team is led by a number of Academy Award® winners, including director of photography Dion Beebe (“Memoirs of a Geisha”), production designer Grant Major (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”), and costume designer Ngila Dickson (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”), as well as Oscar®-nominated editor and longtime Campbell collaborator, Stuart Baird (“Gorillas in the Mist,” “Superman”). The film’s visual effects are being overseen by Oscar®-nominee Kent Houston (“The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen,” “Casino Royale”).

The film is currently scheduled for release in 3D and 2D on June 17, 2011. “Green Lantern” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. '

Gotta admit-Reynolds definitely looks the part. Not sure what to expect given the project's pedigree; I'm getting a real "Spider-Man" '02 vibe from what I've seen so far (i.e. a little too funny book-y for my cinematic tastes).

To me, it seems like this movie is on point visually and conceptually.

However, if Reynolds gives a brain-dead performance, all the work in these areas is wasted.

HI-RES Van Wilder

The all-white eyes are freaky and the mask is not working for me. Perhaps the design should be more like Kyle Rayner's mask.

It does look a bit like face paint (and poor face paint at that in the high-res copy). I'm guessing that's part of the aesthetic design since it looks like the suit "emanates" from the ring itself but if that's the case, why not go with a full face mask or drop it all together? I mean the general public isn't that familiar with the character and they could have just as easily taken more risks with the suit to make it work for the big screen adaptation.

I've got my hopes up but not too high. Best case scenario-we're looking at another "Iron Man."

Given that the first minute made the movie seem like another unfunny Ryan Reynolds comedy, the seeming depth in the second half caught me off guard.

I can deal with the subpar cg, as long as there is intelligence behind the characters, story, and production design. Based on this brief trailer, this could still be the case.

Upon research, it appears that Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) is the lead effects company. These are the same guys and gals who did the Raimi Spiderman films. (Enjoy your no-prize, Joe.)

It’s too bad they didn’t use ILM. After the PT, otherworldly locals are right up their alley.

In lieu of a trophy or statue, I think I'll just stare at those Kat Dennings pics again.

"No matter how bad things get, there's always something good just over the horizon."

Good sentiment. Utter bullshit from a fighter pilot dude who leaves behind one hot chick in his bed to go skyriding with another. Even the trailer's "profound" moments came across as ridiculously cheesy as the CGI.

Plus add the fact that The Green HORNET is set to drop first and totally turn potential on-the-fence Lantern viewers off.

Every single time this trailer has shown to an audience i've sat with, it's gotten a God awful response. When you mix a leading man who turns off a lot of people off with a hero the mainstream hardly cares about and terrible CGI effects, you usually get a failed project.

Green Hornet had Seth Rogan in a time when there were absolutely NO crowd pleasing movies in cinemas and it still only net a far-below-average-for-a-movie-of-its-kind $96M domestic.

Unless the film manages to score great with the press, it's going to bomb.

Andddd the press isn't doing this movie any favours. Apparently it's an utter trainwreck.

Now go back to directing Bond films, Martin Campbell. You're better at that.

I dunno, looks to me like a cgi barf-fest. Never really was very interested in the GL as a comic character, and this doesn't go far to change that. Just seems that the marvel films look superior and with a far better production value and style.

The latest trailer is below.

Even though the cg is spotty, I really like the sci-fi approach they've taken. I hope Campbell delivers.

Everything looks appropriately Green Lantern - at least from what I remember of the comics I read more than a decade ago. But I still don't like Reynolds in the main role (or perhaps any role).
