Thanks for the heads-up - I was able to snag a pass. Per the ticket, the theater has been overbooked for the event. If I can get in, I'll give a report.

Security is very thorough at these events. I'm still impressed by the night vision goggles at the TDK prologue screening.

It's interesting to see that they will be using an already updated Anakin model.

The Obi-Wan new model is old news.

One thing's for certain: LFL knows how to do marketing. That trailer is fantastic. I really hope this new character is much, much more than Darth Maul redux -- and from the trailer, the signs are very promising.

I don't have high expectations for a yellow Darth Maul. It seems unnecessary to add another Dark Jedi into the mix considering Tyrannus, Ventress and even General Grievous. This one's for the kiddies.

That being said the action and music in that clip are very much awesome.

Maul's screen time in the prequels is said by many to have been too short and this though not saga screen-related it is a revisit of Maul and a way to have a proxy of Maul in the CW series.

Looking forward to seeing it unfold.

The vicious hatred of this character mixed with the evil stealth and cunning of Darth Maul should have been a single prequel villain.

I think this has potential to be a very entertaining thread.

I'm open to the character. Although I'm sorta conflicted to the name: Opress is in keeping with Lucas' naming convention while Oppress is correctly spelled.

For a lot of younger fans the New Clone Wars is Star Wars. Featuring movie characters and derivative ones such as Savage in the series - younger fans will be introduced to the movies - which will help sales of 3D and HD Box Set releases.

I hope someone will confirm one way or another after the charity premier, however, I've seen it suggested enough that I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. God, I hope it works.

The ratings for the first half of Season Three has declined somewhat. Perhaps the Ventress-Opress theatrical run is designed to regain some momentum from this season's politics-heavy first half.

Hope bloody so ... The second half of season III needs no more political machinations BS episodes as the first half has saturated CW series viewers with plenty of it.

Well the entire Savage Arc edited into a movie was shown and news is starting to trickle out. We seen a good chunk of arc from previews and trailers such as Dooku's bedroom duel with Sith Witch ghosts and Republic Commandos.

The good news is that Savage is superpowered via sorcery.

The weird news is Darth Maul is inferred to be still "out there".

The idea of a tailsman is taken from a draft of TESB. Originally, Luke receives a talisman that has the location of Dagobah.

• Ahsoka is taken hostage in an attempt to lure Anakin to the Darkside.

• Lucas himself, asked to expand the Darth Maul story by introducing his "sib" (sibling) the fantastically formidable Savage Opress.

There's one thing about missing my chance to see the screenings that really concerns me. After reading reviews and comments about how the story is "so dark" and that "shit goes down" on screen I'm really worried that CN may tweak these episodes to make them younger-kid friendly. Just based on their track record of earlier this year with the Asajj kiss, the network has shown that it will censor the show if deemed necessary.

I did hear that the network will be airing CW a half hour later after the break (maybe as an effort to allow for more mature themes or violence), but received no confirmation on that, yet. I just don't want to wait until the Season III box set comes out to get the whole story as it was intended.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the violence. There are a few neck snaps and one bloodless spear impalement. There’s nothing as racy like Asajj kissing a dead man.

SAVAGE THEATRICAL REPORT

- To start with, the opening space battle is a blast. In the theater, I was able to sit center in the last row (almost under the projector.) This is the same position I sat when I viewed ROTS for the first time. I had a big case of déjà vu as the opening sequence in this arch is obviously structured in the same manner as Sith’s.

- The running theme from the show and films is that the bad guys only look out for themselves and treat others poorly.

Sidious specifically tells Dooku that he is worried that Dooku is training Asajj to kill him. Since she has become to powerful, Sidious wants her dead.

Later, Dooku tells Savage that he is being trained to destroy Sidious so that they can rule the galaxy.

The cannibalistic nature of the Sith is demonstrated with the three way duel between Asajj, Dooku, and Savage. Visually, it was interesting to see a red doubled-bladed saber versus a red single saber versus two red sabers. It reminded by of the Jedi Academy video game.

Image

- Asajj is treated by the Witches with something called the water of life. Witches hold this water in bowls and a mist emanates and surrounds Asajj. Later, with Savage, the water is not used. The witches chant in rhythm and the mist appears. The mist is also used to make Asajj and two Sisters invisible. Savage’s metal staff is conjured from the mist as well.

- Mother Talzin and Asajj place their index fingers on Savage’s temple to control him.

- The series has its first ever flashback. It is shown in the same gauzed manner of Anakin’s vision in ROTS and Ahsoka’s premonitions this season.

As a baby, Asajj is given to Siniteen male by Mother Talzin. She says that Asajj was promised to him. They go live on an unidentified world. The Siniteen male dies when she is a child. At this point, a Jedi adopts her when he sees her use the force to ward off pirate attackers. The Jedi is later killed by pirates.

As a child, Ventress is indeed cute. She wears a shoulder-less dress that reminded me of Betty in the Flintstones.

Tip of the hat to JWFan, who correctly identified teenage Asajj from an earlier teaser trailer. She wears a comb-over hairstyle and is seen training along side her Jedi mentor who is a middle-aged white male. He is square jawed with Eeth Koth-like tattoos on his face. His haircut is essentially the same as Obi-wan’s in TPM. Both he and she use green bladed lightsabers. When he dies, she picks up his saber and delivers her first blow with her signature dual-sword style.

I wonder if the show will have further flashbacks sequences in the future. (Will Qui Gon make a cameo?)

- Asajj dons her new hooded outfit through most the arch. It comes complete with a ninja style scarf which she wears over her mouth.

Her weapon on the Clone Wars magazine cover is not a lightsaber whip, but a rope and sickle.

- During the night attack on Dooku, Asajj wields a blue lightsaber and the two Sisters wield green blades. Lightsabers are used to make Dooku think that he is being attacked by Jedi.

- It’s hard to read Mother Talzin. She can be compassionate towards her daughters, Asajj, and Savage. Yet, there is also a streak of depiction and cruelty in her. Her voice has a slight processed echo. It’s like Sidious’ in ROTS only more subtle.

Talzin states that Dooku had performed a favor for her in the past. It is left unsaid as to what that favor was.

Contrary to an earlier report, Obi-wan and Talzin had not meet prior to this arch.

- Savage’s fraternal ties to Maul are somewhat ambiguous. They are brothers in the sense that they are part of the same clan. Whether they came from the same mother is not fully disclosed. His markings closely resemble Maul’s while his fellow clansmen are all unique. Their colors range from red to orange to yellow. Their pupils are yellow and glow in the dark. (Savage’s pupils later develop the red Sith ring on the outside.)

The Iridonian males on Dathomir are wholly submissive to the Witches. Asajj verbally abuses and physically beats a few without resistance. She has little trouble when fighting them in combat.

- During, the trial sequence Savage and Asajj fight hand-to-hand for awhile. It’s a well choreographed and exciting sequence.

- As a whole, Savage is not a simple clone of Maul, but his own outright character. In a number of ways, he is portrayed sympathetically. He looks out for a fellow clansman, tires to resist Asajj, is forced into the Darkside against his free will, is forced to kill someone close to him, is shocked by Dooku for all his mistakes, and is called Monster by Dooku, Asajj, and Obi-wan.

After his transformation, his voice becomes more like a low growl. When he is not speaking, he gives periodic gorilla grunts. His fighting style is powerful and full of rage. At one point, he sends both Anakin and Obi-wan flying through the air like rag dolls.

- In a move to appease EU’ers, Mace states that Maul’s species is from Iridonia, but he came from a clan living on Dathomir.

- One of the biggest laughs came during a training sequence. At one point, Dooku tries to get Savage to lift heavy stones with the force. After a failed attempt, Savage whines that Dooku wants the impossible a la Luke in ESB.

- There are some brief and legitimately funny Battledriod hijinx during the final fight. One hapless droid gets shoved into a furiously advancing Savage.

- Earlier in the episode Mother Talzin locates Savage in her crystal ball. Through the ball, he is seen moving and scowling. Conversely, Maul’s face is expressionless. He doesn’t even blink. I wonder if Maul’s inertness is a hint to his condition?

- The three episodes are called “The Night Sisters,” “Monster,” and “Witches of the Mist.” All three story credits go to Katie Lucas. If I remember correctly, “The Night Sisters” and “The Witches of the Mist” are directed by Giancarlo Volpe and “Monster” is directed by Kyle Dunlevy.

- In regard to the trailer, it looks the show is venturing into fantasy territory. There is indeed a white bearded, pointy-hated, and Merlin type wizard in the footage. There is also a white-clad woman who looks like the good witch from the Wizard of Oz. The most ominous being is a very tall black-clad, white headed, bald gentleman who looks like pure evil. At one point, it appears that he turns himself into a giant bat.

In terms of locales, a rocky planet figured prominently. This is where Anakin and Ahsoka face off (not Dathomir). Evil Ahsoka looked discolored and veiny.

There is one shot where Obi-wan and Ahsoka are walking on a lifeless planet. Where they step, a bubble of life and energy surround them. Plants and trees come alive within this bubble.

Even Piell wields a green lightsaber and is seen fighting Battledriods on a Republic Destroyer’s bridge.

I’m not sure about the guy in carbonite. It almost looked like a clone (or Jango).

Savage is physically and emotionally defeated. It appears that Mother Talzin is genuinely trying to help and there is no indication that she is deceiving him. She tells Savage that his training will be completed by his brother who is in exile in the outer rim. The talisman she gives Savage glows a little. The camera lense of the crystal ball pans around Maul’s face from left to right. It is unmistakably him.

Again, the odd thing about Maul's face is that it doesn’t move or emote. It like a frozen photograph:

I'm even more excited about these episodes now after reading your last few posts.

A question for you, ECT: I've read from a few places that this episode arc just "felt" like classic Star Wars. Is that your impression as well?

I'm hoping that it's not just an after effect of people seeing another SW venture in the theaters, but rather a genuine feeling that you get from watching the show. I find it promising that if Katie Lucas can bring out that voice we're all familiar with, we may have a competent writer for future forays into the gffa. At the very least, she's one of the few people who could be truly honest with GL and not be afraid to tell him when an idea for the show is stupid.

It doesn’t it feel like an OT film. Even though there are a lot of action sequences, the story isn’t structured in a serial manner.

Due to the opening sequence, Anakin and Obi-wan’s new look, and the dark storyline, it comes across like a prequel to ROTS. As a whole, the creative design is on par with any of the films. The locales, outfits, and enhanced animation add a cinematic quality. Given the success of these episodes, it makes me wonder if the sequel scripts rumor was attached to the wrong Lucas.

One thing I forgot to mention about Savage is that he uses a solar sailor ship (minus the sail) to fly between worlds.

I just have a few questions about the arc:

- I heard that Dooku is finally called 'Lord Tyranus' by Darth Sidious in these episodes. Is that correct? And is Sidious the only person who knows his true name as of yet? I remember Sidious calling Tyranus 'Count' in the TCW movie, which pissed me off a lot. Ventress was present during this conversation, so this might be due to the fact that the Sith wanted to keep Ventress from learning the truth about Dooku.

- Is Tyranus eager to comply with Sidious' order to kill off Ventress, or does he try to make Sidious believe that he would never rebel against him?

- Does Sidious reappear in the arc after he orders Tyranus to kill Ventress? And does he know that Tyranus has found a replacement for Ventress?

- Is Tyranus' home (where he sleeps and trains Opress as is seen in the trailer) located on Serenno, and if so, is it identified by name?

- Do we get some 'political background information' on Savage's missions? Why does he attack Devaron, and why does Tyranus want King Katuunko as a hostage?

- Is there any talk about how Sidious made Maul his apprentice? Do Mother Talzin or Tyranus/Sidious talk about that?

- Is Savage mind-controlled the whole time, or is this just some kind of trigger device activated by Ventress in the end? And comes Savage breaking through this control as a huge surprise, or are there hints that this could happen?

- What is Talzin's agenda? She apparently helps Ventress to get her revenge on Tyranus, but in the end she also seems to want to help Opress to get his revenge.

- If I remember correctly, Sidious calls him Darth Tyranus. No one else is in the room where this happens.

- In Asajj’s defense, Dooku states that she is very important to him. Sidious is fixed in his decision and wants her killed as a test of loyalty. Dooku says that he will do as Sidious wishes. (This is echoed later when Dooku tells Savage that he is to help him destroy Sidious. Savage states that he will do as Dooku wishes.)

The power structure is that Sidious is the biggest fish. While Dooku is powerful in his own right, he needs either Asajj or Savage to destroy Sidious. After the failed assignation attempt on Dooku, Mother Talzin realizes that Asajj needs assistance if Dooku is to die. She then hatches the Savage scheme. Savage attempts to take out both Dooku and Asajj, but ironically they briefly team-up to thwart his attack. Mother Talzin realizes that Savage needs assistance to get his revenge and sends him after brother Maul.

- Dooku contacts Sidious to tell him that Asajj is dead. Sidious states that Dooku has once again proven his loyalty. After this exchange, Sidious does not appear again. If he is made aware of Savage, it is off screen.

- I don’t believe that the planet’s name is discussed. It’s a very attractive, but empty and lonely place.

- Savage is told that Devaron is a key outpost. The Republic headquarters are located in a temple on the planet. Savage is alarmed that he is attacking a holy place. But, Dooku insists on the importance of the mission.

An explanation is given for the capture of King Katuunko, but I can’t remember the specifics. Sorry.

- There is no mention as to how or why Maul became a Sith apprentice.

- Savage’s mind control begins with his transformation. Asajj is surprised that he breaks the spell. However, as a viewer, it’s not too shocking. Before the transformation, he is an honorable person. Also, Dooku treats him poorly. You want the guy to resist.

- Let’s just say that Mother Talzin is a complicated character. Personally, I would be surprised if she lets Savage destroy Asajj. She may be using Savage’s desire for revenge as a means for him to reunite with his brother and finish his training. Of course, it could be that she is angry with Asajj for turning on her mate.

The two revenge schemes could be part of some larger agenda. (Maybe she is really after Sidious.) However, Talzin tells Dooku that after he is provided with Savage, she never wants to hear from Dooku again. So, she may simply want Dathomir left in isolation after the revenge plots play out.

There is a lot more left to be explained in this storyline.

Thanks, E_Chu_Ta!,

I really would be surprised if Sidious would know about or be involved in Maul's apparent survival. Maul would most likely be at his master's side, and not somewhere in exile, if Sidious had known about him. There would also be no Darth Tyranus, if Darth Sidious still had a living Sith apprentice. And he can't have been on Naboo when Maul 'died', as Palpatine was elected Supreme Chancellor when that happened. So it's pretty likely that the witches were involved in Maul's survival, or he somehow managed to pull this off all by himself (which seems to be unlikely given his rather sincere condition).

So hiding Maul and pulling him out of her sleeve at the very end has to be part of a larger game. Maul may just want to get rid of Darth Tyranus to regain his former position, but I'd be rather surprised if he would not feel betrayed by his former master, and intending to go after him. After all, Maul really should be the one person besides Darth Tyranus to know pretty much everything about Darth Sidious and his plans.

Oh, and the Zabraks living on Dathomir are just a non-force-sensitive people until Savage is transformed?

The first lightsaber duel is during the end of a space battle. Obi-wan is shot down into the hangar of a Separatist destroyer. Asajj and Anakin land inside and the three begin to fight. The duel is fairly brief, and at some point, Asajj force chokes both Anakin and Obi-wan at the same time. Asajj is eventually defeated by the Jedi and loses her lightsabers. Dooku instructs all Separatist ships to fire on the destroyer where Asajj is located. In attempting to kill Asajj, Dooku ironically saves her. Once the ship is hit with blasts, Obi-wan, Anakin, and Asajj make a break for their lives. Asajj retrieves her sabers via the force as she is running to her ship.

The second duel is the assassination attempt on Dooku. You can see most of this sequence with the Celebration footage. Dooku is in control for most the fight. At the end, he is knocked to the ground and loses his lightsaber. Because he appears to be unconscious, Asajj goes in for the kill. However, Dooku is faking and, at the last moment, is able to shock all three assassins. He force throws them out of a window like Palpatine does to Mace in ROTS.

The third lightsaber duel is between Dooku and Savage. This is the first time Savage is seen using a double bladed lightsaber. He mainly uses one blade during the fight. Since Savage is too aggressive with his attacks, Dooku has little trouble with him. Dooku eventually wrests Savages lightsaber away from him. The sequence ends with Dooku holding both lightsaber blades at Savage’s neck just like Anakin does to Dooku in ROTS.

The fourth lightsaber duel is between Savage, Asajj, and Dooku. Savage takes the dead king to a Separatist destroyer where Dooku is waiting. The fight takes place in a somewhat narrow trapezoid shaped room. Dooku is angry at Savage for killing the king. Asajj enters through the doorway of the room. She places her index finger on Savage’s temple. This initiates the spell.

Savage and Asajj attack Dooku. During this sequence, Savage is knocked down and shocked several times. This eventually breaks the spell and he then attacks Asajj and Dooku. He force chokes both Asajj and Dooku at the same time. They break free somehow (maybe through force lightening – I can’t remember). The three go against each other. Dooku and Asajj quickly work together the stave-off Savage. Savage is beaten back and makes a break for the door.

Obi-wan and Anakin enter the doorway just as Savage is charging for it. Savage sends them flying through the air via the force. Dooku escapes down a hatch in the floor and Asajj follows him. Savage, Anakin, and Obi-wan fight down a narrow hallway going right to left on screen. Their fight is intercut with Asajj and Dooku fighting down a narrow hallway going left to right. Dooku orders the droids to attack Savage.

When Savage, Obi-wan, and Anakin make it to the hangar, the droids attack. Obi-wan and Anakin break away from Savage. Savage eventually escapes to the solar sailor and flys off. Dooku dominates Asajj in their fight. Asajj loses her lightsabers and is cornered on the ground. As Dooku goes in for the kill, Asajj uses the force to break open a steam pipe. The steam shoots in Dooku’s face and she escapes.

If I had to rank the fights, I would say: 1) the Sith battle, 2) the Dooku assassination attempt at, 3) Asajj versus Dooku / Anakin and Obi-wan versus Savage, 4) Obi-wan and Anakin versus Asajj, and 5) Dooku versus Savage.

In regard to Zabraks, none other than a transformed Savage are seen using the force. The same goes for the Witches. The exceptions are Maul and Asajj. After his defeat on Naboo, Maul may be out of favor with Sidious. So, there is no guarantee that he would take precedent over Dooku.

I am going to guess that Talzin’s endgame is to have one of her disciples supplant Sidious as chief Sith. Since this disciple would be beholden to his / her Mother, Talzin would be top dog in the galaxy.

Thanks for the summaries, really looking forward to these episodes, just one question:

You summarized 4 duels, but your ranking says its 5, including an unsummarized “Sith Duel” being number 1. What happens in that one, and isn’t there another Anakin and Obi-Wan vs. Savage fight?

The duels really sound to be great. Is there any talk between Asajj and Tyranus during their duels? Does she accuse him of betraying her, and is he somewhat trying to explain his motivation to her ('I've to obey my master' or something like that)? And is Tyranus still believing the assassins attacking him at home were Jedi? Doesn't he send guards after them to capture them and find out who they are exactly?

On Maul: Well, I agree with you, Sidious most likely was very displeased with Maul's performance on Naboo. This makes it very likely that Sidious would have killed Maul himself, had he known that he survived. It makes little sense for him to train a new apprentice if his former apprentice is still alive.

Although Dooku seems to be a better alternative to Maul (especially with the whole plan about the Clone Wars - I can't see Maul as charismatic head of the CIS), Sidious most likely had these two to fight for the right to become/remain his apprentice. It may be possible that such an event actually took place, and that Maul escaped Sidious and Tyranus the way Asajj escaped Tyranus is this arc, but until we know the details the better and more interesting explanation would be if Maul eluded the Sith and went into hiding immediately after Naboo.

The really interesting question is now how Maul became Sidious' apprentice in the first place? Was he also a sleeper agent of the witches, destined to assassinate Darth Sidious when the time was right? Or did Sidious choose Maul as his apprentice all by himself? Was Maul really supposed to be a real Sith apprentice or just Sidious' equivalent to Tyranus' use of Ventress/Opress? Getting flashbacks to how Dooku fell and became Darth Sidious' apprentice would be really great.

Oh, and seems the ending to you really like a cliffhanger as the description indicates? And can you imagine the that the three episodes would work as standalone episodes? It would be great, if the series finally developed beyond the whole standalone episode thing.

I completely spaced on the duel between Anakin, Obi-wan, and Savage on Toydaria. Savage lands on the planet easily dispatches with a few royal guards. He enters the throne room, fights off of a few more guards, and uses a hover pod to rise to the same level as the King. The King draws his sword to resist, but Savage is able to grab him.

Obi-wan and Anakin enter the throne room. They use the pods to rise to the same level as Savage. Savage engages Obi-wan first and then Anakin. In between parries, he loses grip of the King and keeps having to grab him back. Eventually, he snaps his neck. Savage knocks Obi-wan and Anakin from the pods. He destroys the hover system on one pod and it falls on Anakin and Obi-wan. He then makes his escape.

With the Toydarian duel considered, my new rankings are:

1. Dooku versus Savage versus Asajj (“the Sith battle”)
2. the Dooku assassination attempt
3. Asajj versus Dooku & Anakin and Obi-wan versus Savage (the end part of “the Sith battle”)
4. Obi-wan and Anakin versus Savage on Toydaria
5. Obi-wan and Anakin versus Asajj
6. Dooku versus Savage.

During their battles, the discussion between Asajj and Dooku are mainly along the lines of Asajj stating that she will get her revenge and Dooku stating that she is not strong enough to defeat him. Before he orders the attack on the Separatist destroyer, Dooku tells Asajj that she has failed him for the last time. In their subsequent encounters, he offers no further explanation for his decision to kill her.

There is no indication that Dooku does not believe that the assassination attempt was by anyone other than Jedi. In throwing the assassins through the windows, it appears that he believes the assassins to be dead. No further action is taken on them.

The ending is definitely a cliffhanger. There is no resolution, but a sense that the series is done with this story for now. It’s like the end of the Mandalorian trilogy from season 2.

How do you feel the different duels compare to the ones we have gotten before in the series and in the movies?

The duels in the arch are as good as any in the series. To me, the best duels have been Kit Fisto versus Grievous, Asajj versus Luminara and Ahsoka, and Obi-wan versus Pre Vizsla. I would say that the Dooku assassination duel and the Dooku versus Asajj versus Savage duel are on the same level as those sequences. However, none of the fights match the drama of the OT duels or the athleticism of the PT duels.

Oh, just thought about the fact that Ventress is a born Nightsister. Is there an indication that she remembers anything of her time on Dathomir? And can she do some of the Nightsisters' magic stuff or is interested in learning their magical traditions now?

Asajj comes to Mother Talzin for help after Dooku turns on her. So, she is aware of her heritage somehow. She doesn't discuss her childhood on Dathomir. I don't believe she participates in either ritual. However, she knows the trick to controlling Savage - placing an index finger on his temple.
