So I know it's only September 16th and all, but it kinda feels like Christmas morning. That’s because when I opened up my Macbook just now, an insanely cool visual treat from a trusted source was just sitting there, patiently waiting in my inbox like a hungry kitty (that weak metaphor will become a sly pun by the end of this story).

Lets face it. After the 'Fallen' got their 'Revenge' on us last summer by duping us into spending our hard-earned coin on a lackluster TRANSFORMERS sequel, it quickly became apparent that Optimus and Co. were already starting to gather a bit of rust. But for those anxiously awaiting an heir apparent to breathe fresh life into the massive-metal-monster genre, it looks like the oft-rumored VOLTRON movie may finally be gaining some traction.

It appears that Atlas Entertainment has taken the reins on the project and is gearing up a pretty impressive pitch. Apparently, they've hired the currently hot screenwriting tag-team of Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The names may not sound familiar to you, but they might soon. The duo wrote the upcoming CONAN flick, and are currently scribing the DR. STRANGE and UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE adaptations.

Now for that whole "Christmas morning" part. The highlight of the pitch comes in the form of a handful of wicked (and carnage-heavy) concept art. Looks like they're definitely not prepping a Saturday morning cartoon for the kiddies. Check out the JoBlo.com exclusive images of Voltron and Robeast tearing our planet to shreds now (click to see them in hi-res) and here's hoping we get more feline robot exclusives in the future!

I heard about this a year ago and wondered what ever happened to it. That is cool that it looks like it might actually happen. Voltron had always been one of my favorite TV shows in the 80's when I was growing up.

All though I'm not sure how the idea of Voltron being on Earth will fare as it never originated from Earth to begin with. The concept art isn't too bad but I hope they make the Lions more closer to the original TV versions.

that looks really nice. I'm confused though, the series was on a distant planet. And the subtitle was "Defender of the UNIVERSE". Why are these defending the lower Bronx and built in a hangar by humans??

What you don't realize is that it's been thousands of years since these explorers have been back to earth and it's been taken over by talking monkeys.

I dunno', I think I like the idea that people would build such a ridiculously fantastic machine.

I was never a fan. I had discovered naked womens by the time this was popular, and it felt too much like a Battle of the Planets/Robotech smoothie to get me interested. It also reminded me a lot of the Mighty Orbots, in as much as the modular robot concept, which wasn't too popular yet. That show was underated, shortlived, and fantastic. I don't know which came first, but I saw Orbots first and dug it. So, basically, I don't know much about Voltron.

But it looks impressive in the concept art.

When I first heard about this a year or so ago, I had read a possible story line that a group of Marines, or at least the Military in general found Voltron buried some where on Earth.

I too hope that the origins of Voltron aren't originated from Earth as it never was from our planet to begin with.

I can see though that Voltron came to Earth long ago to defend it from the forces of evil. Once the forces of evil were destroyed (or so thought) and Voltron was no longer needed, they decided to bury it here on Earth. I could see that as a potential plot for the movie and it would be a pretty good one.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens though on how the story is developed. I hope they don't bastardize the story too much.

let me introduce you, Troy, to the awesomeness of Voltron. The voice over is by none other than Optimus "Peter Cullen" Prime. Voltron is made up of 5 gigantic war-lions that transform and combine into an even gianter ass kicking robot named Voltron. Voltron defends universes and hot princesses and kills some giant mutant ro-beasts by the shows end and starts all over next week. It IS awesome.

There were Transformers, G.I. Joe, Thundercats and Voltron back in the day. They kicked butt and told you to eat your vitamins and are now being mined for half-assed but hopefully cool movies.

So we're not going to mention Vehicle Voltron or Robot Voltron?

Thanks for sharing the pics. But I dunno why no one else is saying this, so I'll just come right out with it:

The designs are mind-numbingly stupid. It's the Transformers "make it so complex it HAS to be cool" designs all over again.

the only voltron that happened were the lion version. and at least the designs look like cats. yes, they're busy, but they also match the colors of the original too. No flames on my Voltron.

I think they should look like big colored cardboard boxes!!! I dont want any realistic looking parts! Just big, cell animation, blocks! ...preferably 8-bit nintendo graphics... because those were the best!

I still have the giant toy versions of the lions and vehicles. In a closet at my parents house, of course!

From the official site there were three Voltrons: Lion Voltron, Vehicle Voltron, then a Gladiator Voltron. There was a White Voltron shown in either the closing credits or commericals of which I have always been curious about. All episodes are up on it's youtube channel.

For me, the animation and writing of the cartoon wasn't on par with the Hasbro/Marvel/Sunbow productions of Transformers - GIJOE - Visionaries - Inhumanoids - JEM - Dungeons & Dragons. However that's not what I'm in this thread for:

There is a Robert Rodriguez Double-Header now playing in the MF Video Forum: PREDATORS & MACHETE DVDRips are up :filez:

true, the writing was subpar. comparable silliness to that of Speedracer. But it was cool. he was a giant robot that could make a flaming sword from his lion hands! I mean COME ON! And usually, Voltron came on right before Thundercats so you had a two-fer.

and :heavymetal: for Predators

I never cared for Vehicle Voltron or the other incarnations of it. I agree Bearvomit the only true Voltron was the lion version and yes the original series they at least made the lions look like lions.
