Just read on some status update that this is being released 2011 with new material and deleted scenes, including never-before-seen Luke constructing the lightsaber from Return of the Jedi! Ho. Ly. Shit.

THANK THE MAKER! he's keeping the new stuff (deleted scenes) separate!

Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray
[spoil]
[align=left]
[hr]
We're there as Lucas talks about the upcoming release of all six films and debuts a very cool deleted scene.

The Star Wars Blu-ray release is now as official as it can be, as none other than George Lucas announced the films were coming to the format. "I wish I could say it's coming out this year, but it's coming out next year," Lucas said to the packed audience at the "Main Event" at Star Wars Celebration V today, which was moderated by Jon Stewart.

Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, "They'll be different kinds of additional material," adding, "I think you've seen enough behind the scenes [material] for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be included in there, [including] more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet." Lucas said these newly released scenes would be kept separate from the film itself.

In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage, to introduce one of the new deleted scenes, which he said was his "original entrance" in Return of the Jedi. Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it was for the UPFs in the audience – the "ultra passionate fans."

We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. We see Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death Star. We then cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes Back. As Vader sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him reaching out with the Force. "Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of the Force. My son. It is the only way."

As Vader continues to repeat Luke's name, we cut to a tight close-up of Luke, insinuating he is hearing his father's voice. it's a very ominous shot of Luke, who is wearing his cloak and hood, with the shadows from the hood blocking out his eyes completely - in line with how Darth Sideous' face is mostly hidden. As Vader's voice fades away, the camera pans down to Luke's hands, and we see that he is using a tool to complete work on his new lightsaber. Satisfied, he puts the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would have been the first reveal of the green blade.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no doubt to receive his orders to head to Jabba the Hutt.

That was it for the scene, but the crowd erupted in cheers at what was indeed a very cool new moment, from films we are all quite familiar with.

The panel ended with one more surprise guest – Carrie Fisher. Alas, there were no other deleted scenes shown to us today, but Fisher cracked to Lucas, "Did you put the nude scenes back in?" She then turned to the audience and deadpanned, "There was a huge me and Jabba porn scene. That's what got me into drugs."

No further details were given on the Blu-rays as yet, which leave plenty to speculate about. It's safe to say from the Return of the Jedi scene being shown that this release will include all of the original trilogy, but while it seems likely the answer is yes, there was nothing definitive stated about the prequels being released simultaneously. And no, we didn't get any info on whether the original, pre-Special Edition versions of the films will be part of this set as well.

Suffice to say though, there will be more news to come in the months ahead, so keep checking IGN for more on the Star Wars Blu-ray release!

Update: About five minutes after I published this story, I was handed Lucasfilm's official press release for the Blu-rays. It confirms that all six movies are being released on Blu-ray and that the set is coming out Fall 2011 - so don't line up just yet! We're also told it will include, "documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives."

Considering that it's badass, I wish the scene was inlcuded in the final film. It would fit perfectly after Vader's entrance and just before the droids go to the Palace. (Oh well.)

Cool scene to see, but can understand why it was cut out.

If this scene was in the movie we'd lose:

1. Who's that cloaked figure walking in Jabba's gate? Force-choking?!! What!?!

2. That sense of ..."How's our gang suppose to get out of this mess?" ... when Luke's on the plank. Showing Luke give R2 the lightsaber takes away from the dramatic tension & surprise of R2 shooting the lightsaber to Luke.

Though it was cool to see Luke even more "Darth Sidious-ly looking" & see the hero version of Luke's lightsaber with the flickering lights.

Can't wait for the blu-ray!

1) I always though it was Luke. To me, this scene doesn't take away from Darkside vibe of the entrance. In fact, I think it enhances that feeling.

2) The “how” is still retained as the audience never sees Luke place the lightsaber in R2. The transition would be from the shot of 3PO outside the hut to a wipe of the droids walking.

Overall, I think the scene helps connect the Death Star II story and Tatooine. As is, the entire Tatooine sequence is a set-piece separate from the rest of the film.

At any rate, the damage is done. That scene will be playing in my mind every time I watch ROTJ (my favorite of the six, BTW).

has this scene ever been referenced before in any other material? shooting scripts, novels, making of's or anything? I wouldn't put it past Lucas to have recorded this thing last year. You don't really see anyone's face except Mark Hamill's chin and you KNOW he'd take the job.

Suspicious :?

The scene was in the original shooting schedule for the film.
Here is a matte painting of the cave as well as a story board for the scene inside it.

That scene is surreal. We finally get to see that hallway on the death star II. I have to wonder how much is original footage and how much is digital, though. If the set includes the Toshi station scenes in HD I'll be ecstatic.

If the press release is to be believed then the scene has had finished effects since '83 and thus should not have any current age digital effects. It says the scene made to postproduction before it was cut.

starwars.com wrote:
What makes the Jedi deleted clip so remarkable is that it made it all the way to postproduction before it was cut, so it is a rare example of a cut scene with completed visual effects and music.

Upon repeated viewing I'm certain that is correct. My first thoughts were that they rotoscoped out the meditation chamber from TESB and had James Earl Jones dub the scene ala the 2004 DVD. It definitely looks likes all original footage.

FUCK. I didn't even know they filmed the lightsaber construction scene, makes me wonder what else Lucas has up his sleeve for the Blu-rays.

I agree-this is one scene that should be shoe-horned into the pic.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure that matte painting Mike_Droideka posted was first seen (by me anyway) on the old Shadows of the Empire game for the Nintendo 64.

NYTimes interviews Lucas

Quote:
Mr. Lucas said the versions of the first three “Star Wars” films – “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” – included in the Blu-ray boxed set will be the special-edition releases that were shown theatrically in 1997 and digitally restored for a 2004 standard-definition DVD boxed set.

Not surprising. I'm fine with the SE's but if they're going to be using the digitally restored '04 masters I really hope they recolor-time all three films. Unless of course George now prefers things like the Tantive IV corridor walls or Hoth snow to be blue tinted. That's the main reason I don't watch the '04 versions too often because the color cast problems bother me more than any of the actual SE changes.

There's that above from 2009, then (yesterday?) at CV's Main Event, Hamill walks out on stage and says;

Quote:
Mark Hamill: I just saw this clip for the first time on a golf cart on a computer.
12:04
This is my natural entrance as a Jedi.
12:04
When they told me, I said "I vaguely remember this" and when they showed me I really remembered it. It's very short, but it's very special.

I guess it's 28 years ago and little things like that, just get forgotten about.

I wonder if he'll CGI ice monsters into the Echo base deleted scenes. I've read that this scene might be fake? That the Vader helmet is the design from Revenge of the Sith and that Mark Hamill has stated he never filmed this.

This is the perfect (and let's face it, probably last real) opportunity for Lucas to fix the lingering problems with the current transfers. Spike is running the OT right now in HD and if the BDs end up looking like what I'm seeing right now, I'm going to be very disappointed.

Lucas @ NYTimes.com

[spoil]
[align=left]Though nearly 35 years of “Star Wars” fandom have yielded all kinds of memorabilia inspired by George Lucas’s outer-space epic, including light saber lookalikes and wearable replicas of Princess Leia’s slave costume, one holy grail has lately eluded fans: a video version of the “Star Wars” films that takes the fullest advantage of their top-of-the-line home theater systems.

That’s a Death Star-sized void that Lucasfilm plans to fill shortly. On Saturday, the studio is to announce that it will release all six live-action “Star Wars” features on Blu-ray DVD in fall 2011. A boxed set containing the Blu-ray versions of the movies, spanning from 1977’s “Star Wars” through the final 2005 prequel, “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” will mark the first time the films have been offered in a high-definition home format, and will include documentary features and previously unseen footage.

Given Mr. Lucas’s exacting standards for film presentations (he founded the THX company) and Lucasfilm’s embrace of digital movie technology (digital projection was used for the theatrical release of all three “Star Wars” prequels, and the last two prequels were shot digitally), many fans expected that high-definition versions of the “Star Wars” features would soon follow.

But in a telephone interview, Mr. Lucas said he had been waiting to see if the Blu-ray format would be widely accepted by home viewers.

“We’ve been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it,” Mr. Lucas said on Friday from the Star Wars Celebration V convention in Orlando, Fla.

When the original “Star Wars” movies were released on VHS in the early 1980s (along with other short-lived home video formats), Mr. Lucas said sales were slow to take off at first.

LUCAS: “We came out with ‘Star Wars’ right at the beginning of VHS,” he said, “and we sold 300,000 copies.” Within a few years, he added, “They were selling 1 million, 2 million, 10 million. So we learned from that experience that if you’re too early in the marketplace, there’s just not enough demand for it.”

In the case of Blu-ray, at least the potential for galactic-scale sales exists: a recent report by the media firm DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group said that nearly 2 million Blu-ray players were sold in the first half of 2010, an increase of 103 percent over last year, for a total of 19.4 million such devices in the U.S.

Perhaps bracing for the reactions of fans who decried some of the changes made to the special-edition films – like, say, an exchange of gunfire between Han Solo and a certain green-skinned bounty hunter – Mr. Lucas said that to release the original versions of these films on Blu-ray was “kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.”

LUCAS: “You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally,” he added. “It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”

And while some viewers might want the “Star Wars” Blu-ray release in time for this year’s Life Day – that is, the Wookiee holiday that roughly coincides with the start of the holiday shopping season – Mr. Lucas said a 2011 release was the earliest possible date. (The boxed set will be distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment; Lucasfilm did not give pricing information or indicate if the films will also be sold individually.)

That, he said, was partly due to continuing work on the additional Blu-ray features, and partly to factors beyond his control.

LUCAS: “We’ve been working on them for quite a while,” Mr. Lucas said, “but still, there are pipelines. Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things.”
[/align]
[/spoil]

George has confirmed we won't be getting the OOT. I find it pretty pathetic when George is blathering on about how it would be too expensive to restore the originals. I just really don't believe he can't afford to give Star Wars the Blade Runner treatment.

I doubt we'll be getting the 2004 versions, but if that is actually the case my interest in this release just went down further. I can watch the deleted scenes on youtube or whatever and cg Yoda in TPM isn't that big a deal.

The idea of Han being killed in ROTJ mid-way into the film isn't a good idea and I don't know why Kurtz crucifies Lucas for going with a 'happier' conclusion. It's a fucking fairy tale.

I do think the Second Death Star was a cop out, especially because they never really go into detail about the Empire's plan to assemble a 'fleet' of Death Stars. Had that been established in the prequels or ANH then it might have worked.

As for the lightsaber scene...I've known about it and I've always thought it wasn't needed. I'm happy I've seen it, but I think it's less cool of an introduction for Luke and it's kind of redundant to have Threepio there considering he explains it all in his first scene in the final cut.

I don't think we're getting what we want from this BR set. We're not getting the OOT and the transfer isn't going to be any better than what we see on HDTV. The music will still be fucked and the awful PT score butchering will never be cured.

It's such a shame.

Starwars.com has The Main Event with Jon Stewart up in it's entirety.

No Live-Action Series announcements :vfuckoff:

Despite the fact that there was no mention of the Live-Action Series - the BD box set news and Clone Wars video somewhat made up for it.

Hoping Empire's Wampa Attack deleted scene and Jedi's Sandstorm deleted scene are on the disc also.

I do find it pathetic he talks about preserving things but says it's too expensive to restore the theatrical prints. He's back peddling when it comes to this shit.

Anyways regarding the box set next fall I for one will buy it. I really hope though they get this right this time both color timing, audio corrections everything. I also hope to god that they reinsert the original actor for Anakin back at the end of Jedi or I'm going to be super pissed.

Supposedly too that a complete soundtrack for each movie is being considered to and will coincide with this release.

Well, there was that whole thing about the sound being remixed again awhile back, so I'm thinking they are actually taking another look at this whole thing and not just slapping HD versions of the 04 release on BD.

Then again, considering Lucasfilm's general sloppiness and laziness in the last decade or so, I wouldn't be all that surprised if that's all they do. :what:

I could also see George using the 3D release as an excuse to hold off on any further changes.

Glad George finally explained the dialogue change when Vader talks to Palpy in Empire. No wonder he didn't talk about it on the commentary.

What did he say? I'm sure it was a lot of nonsense.

The implication of the new scene is that Vader is aware that Luke is his son and tries, rather poorly, to feign ignorance.

Lucas Main Event Play-By-Play @ Starwars.com
[spoil]
[align=left]

"As you can see it's quite a turnout at the Main Event of Celebration V," Stewart says.

"It's just like your show only a smaller audience," Lucas says.

On being in Orlando:

Stewart welcomes Lucas to Orlando, asking if he's spent time here previously. "Yes, I live at Disney World. I went on the Star Tours ride before we take it down and open up the new one."

On an uber-long funny fan question from Chris in George about landspeeder inconsistencies in A New Hope:

Why is C-3PO driving when he's only been on Tatooine 60 hours, and he was wandering around the desert lost now he's driving a landspeeder. And earlier he's not even sure what planet he was on. But the question is his landspeeder wasn't an XP-38 but an inferior X-34, and he has a confused robot navigate. George, why?

LUCAS: "It's amazing what wonders a good oil bath can do for you"

Does a protocol droid come with a GPS?," Stewart asks.

LUCAS: "No, Artoo is the GPS. So without Artoo, he's lost"

On seeing a room at Celebration full of working astromechs built by fans in comparison to the R2-D2 units he worked with originally on film:

LUCAS: "It's a tragedy" "It's the great irony of life. I spent literally 8 years trying to get R2-D2 to work no more than 10 feet in a straight line. To be able to have one droid that could actually take its leg out and go into the tripod position and move forward all at once. In the end, the droids -- there were eight of them -- were so inadequate that we had to take a fiberglass mold of one of them put it on a couple of sticks and run them with some wagon wheels on it and pull it by a string. Here they have the most beautiful Artoo units you'd ever possibly imagined and they are magnificent. If only I could make another Star Wars."

On how Lucas comes up with character names (question via a fan called Chadmiral Ackbar):

LUCAS: "Right from the very beginning, the one thing about writing is that I don't want to do it. So I go to work at 9, I get up at 6, and all the writing is done between 5:45 and 6. I have to get my three pages a day done or I'm toast. So I spend my day doing things that are supposed to be important but don't really matter like waiting to get the mail, and one of those things is to write down names. I have a book that has names and I write names with my son. Wherever we are if I see something I like I'll write it down."

"Why don't we have characters like Friendly's?" says Stewart. "Oh, there's the new Admiral Nabisco!"

"If you look real hard, you'll see some of that," Lucas says. "Where we live and where Skywalker Ranch is an old Indian site of the Miwok Indians. So that's where Ewok came from. Dexter Jettster is named after my son who I call Jettster. Darth Vader is dark water or dark father in Dutch, or Dutch-ish."

On the 501st Legion elite costuming organization:

LUCAS: "The thing about the 501st that's great is that it sprang into life from the fans, from going to conventions", "Two guys getting together wanting to build suits, and now it's like 5,000 strong in 32 countries. They're everywhere I go; wherever we need them. And visiting kids in hospitals and you don't understand the significance of that until you see it in action and see the smiles on the kids' faces being overwhelmed. It's just a great thing all the way around."

"Is there any concern that the largest 501st overseas is in Germany?" Stewart jokes. "They're called stormtroopers. Do the Polish 501st ever get nervous?"

"The Belgian 501st have TIE fighters, so no one is going to take over Belgium," Lucas says.

(A fan yells "What about the Rebel Legion?")

"I don't think you were supposed to put that information out there," Stewart says to the fan. "That's a secret!"

On staying true to his vision when faced with obstacles:

When filming A New Hope, how did Lucas stay positive given everything was turning against him? (question from Matt from Orlando)

LUCAS: "It helps to be nuts"

STEWART: "I think you've just written the title to your autobiography"

LUCAS: "You have to have such persistence and be so stubborn and just say, 'I'm right, I don't care what the rest of the world thinks.' It's the only way you can do it. March forward no matter what happens. You just keep going no matter what the odds are to get there. On New Hope and even then on Empire Strikes Back it was very dark. Even after A New Hope, getting the next film going was very, very difficult. And there were a lot of times where it looked like it wouldn't get finished. And you just say, 'I believe in this completely. And I will sink with the ship if that's what it comes down to. If you don't have that commitment, it won't happen."

On Luke Skywalker's name not being changed to protect his identity:

LUCAS: "There is a logic to that", "The first part being is that there's a lot of Skywalkers. Is there one Skywalker in the universe? No. You should see the phone book!"

STEWART: "I always thought Skywalker name was somewhat unique?"

LUCAS: "No, no, no, there's even the Skywalker wine"

"Then the other part which is the one place that is the most painful for Anakin Skywalker is Tatooine, because that's where he grew up, that's where he lost his mother. The core of his sense of loss is on that planet. It's called denial. You'll notice also the Emperor has long suspected that there are children.

You got to remember that Vader didn't even know that there are children at all. He killed Padme and didn't even know that the babies existed. He just put that out of his mind. "But the Emperor knew there was a possibility because he told a lie that said, 'You killed her,'" continues Lucas. "He knew she was pregnant and that there was a possibility these kids might still be alive.

When Luke blows up the Death Star and you come back to this movie we're celebrating now, the first thing he says is 'Skywalker's alive. You son lives.' And that's the first time Vader really finds out he does have a son. The Emperor kind of knew it, he was just waiting for something to get in sense a ripple in the Force and say 'A-ha!'"

On creating backstories of the characters ahead of time:

STEWART: "Is all this planned out beforehand, all these backstories, or do you have to go back in once you lay it out and create a backstory through it?"

LUCAS: "No, I just make it up as I go along"

On the psychological impact of the darkness of Empire on kids:

LUCAS: "I was ending it on a real downer", "After all, 'I'm your father' -- cut your hand off, that's a little rough. I did bring in a few psychologists and asked them, 'If you were a 10-year-old boy would this be a harmful thing to you?' Mythologically speaking that is a real key psychological motif, not including the thing about your mother. And I talked with them and they said it won't hurt them at all. I was worried about it.

They said, 'Well, Darth Vader is a bad guy and some of the kids will be able to handle it and they'll just say, 'Hmmm, that's interesting.' The others who can't handle it emotionally will just say, 'Darth Vader's lying. He's a bad guy he lies about everything.' And they won't believe it. So they have a built in safety net to keep them from understanding the true nature of the father.'"

On annoying characters:

LUCAS: "There always has to be someone who takes the brunt of the ridicule", "In the first film, it was Threepio. Nobody could stand Threepio. They hated him, he was the worst character on Earth. All he did was talk, he was fussy, etc. Then, in the third film, we introduce the cute little Ewoks, and that then took all the pressure off Threepio. The last victim of this ridicule is poor old Jar Jar Binks, which is basically the same fussy mumbly guy that Threepio was."

On the generation gap between trilogies:

LUCAS: "We know we have a real honest-to-God generation gap with Star Wars, which we found out after Episode I", "Anyone over 40 loves IV, V, and VI, and hates I, II, and III. And you'll notice the kids under 30 all love I, II, and III, and hate IV, V, and VI" (at this point, a din of friendly protests arose from the audience). Now, we've got The Clone Wars for the under-ten-year-olds. Come on ten-year-olds, fight for your rights!"

On the new animated series:

LUCAS: "We are working right now with Seth Green", "I convinced him that we could do a fun little cartoon show like Spongebob Squarepants for four- and five-year-olds, and he still believes it's for 21-year-olds. It's going to be a strange mishmash that nobody really knows what's going to happen, but I know one thing -- it'll be funny!"

On the role of the Jedi:

LUCAS: "It's the monk idea", "In Star Wars, the monks are really not warriors, they're negotiators but they negotiate with a big stick."

About the Force:

LUCAS: "The whole idea of the movie, ultimately, is that you have a light side and you have a dark side", "The light side is compassion, which means you care about other people, and the dark side is that you care only about yourself."

About the fate of Darth Plagueis:

Jon Stewart asks if the insinuation that Palpatine killed Darth Plagueis in his sleep is true

LUCAS: "In theory, yeah he did kill him", "That is what apprentices do."

On his legacy:

LUCAS: "Star Wars obviously snuck up and grabbed me, threw me across the room and beat me against the wall", "It's been a very slow process of me accepting the reality of what's happened and also to get my head around the enormity of the whole thing.

And I'm philosophical enough to know that maybe it will go on, maybe it won't, and that we've made a mark on the twentieth century. Maybe it will still be there in the twenty-first century [audience applause]. My only hope is that the first guy who gets on Mars says, you know, 'I wanted to do this ever since I saw Star Wars.'"

About Obi-Wan's planet of origin:

LUCAS: "This is one of the first things I wrote in the very first script" , "He comes from the planet Stewjon."

On Baron Papanoida in The Clone Wars?:

LUCAS: "My daughter actually wrote an episode about the family", "And of course my son was upset because he didn't get to do enough of the fighting. He said I got to do most of the fighting, because, of course, I am like Arnold Schwarzenegger."

The audience was then given a brief sneak peek at a scene from Season 3 which involves the Baron in action-hero mode, defending family members with twin blasters blazing in a cantina-like setting.

About a new characters in The Clone Wars:

LUCAS: "In another episode my daughter wrote", "on the planet where Asajj Ventress comes from, there's women on one side and men on the other. The women control the planet and the Emperor used one of the men for Darth Maul. Ventress finds disfavor with Dooku and plots to get him another apprentice that she controls."

According to Lucas, this new Zabrak character -- Savage Oppress -- may share some close family ties with Darth Maul.

On a Blu-Ray Star Wars release:

LUCAS: "I wish I could say it was coming out this year but it's not", "It's coming out next year"

HAMILL: "You can see my cleft chin sticking out of the hood, but the first thing that gets applause is my lightsaber"

[/spoil]

At the end of RotS Vader thinks his unborn child died with Padme, so when it gets out that a Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star he doesn't realize it's his son. George said that last names work in Star Wars the same way they do in the real world. Vader is probably suspicious over that matter but he doesn't actually know what's going on until the emperor confirms it's his kid. Up until then, Vader just thinks it's some random Skywalker that Obi-Wan picked up hoping to train as a Jedi. "He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him."

In Verboten's post is a link to starwars.com's play-by-play with the Q&A hidden - minus the extra stuff - such as the "comedy".

Below are notable exceprts:

What gets me is that Lucas is going to have two animated series out (both will be or are viewed as "child-friendly") including the new Seth Green produced Original Trilogy-Era "comedy series" (Star Wars meets The Flintstones or ½-hour Robot Chicken Sketch?) and yet there was nothing brought up about the Live-Action Series. The questions Stewart asked were fan-submited and there had to be few LAS questions placed.

I'm pretty sure any questions that were asked by Stewart on behalf of the fans were vetted closely by Lucas and/or those close to him well beforehand. Since the live action series wasn't mentioned I think it's safe to assume that it's on the back burner for the time being.

I really thought this was stuff that most people got while watching the movies but there you go. It never ceases to amaze me the things some people are confused by. It's all keeping in line with the succession of apprentices "rule of two" idea that Lucas introduced in TPM. Of course Palpatine would try to hide the fact that Anakin's son survived-since the father is now damaged goods (in more ways than one) it only makes sense that Palpatine would hope to turn the son and have a "far younger and more powerful" Sith at his side.

The idea of Han being killed in ROTJ mid-way into the film isn't a good idea and I don't know why Kurtz crucifies Lucas for going with a 'happier' conclusion. It's a fucking fairy tale.

True. It also wouldn't have left much room for Lucas to explore the darker territory of the prequels. While the details of the back story may have been missing, I think Lucas had a better idea of the big picture than Kurtz or his critics really want to give him credit for.

"It's amazing what wonders a good oil bath can do for you," Lucas explains.

That's priceless! And yeah kid, shut the fuck up and go back to watching Star Trek. :monocle:

I still don't exactly dig the idea that every Sith kills or attempts to kill its teacher. Are you telling me these guys never got together and thought, "hey, wait a sec--if we stop murdering each other, we could work together and kill the Jedi."

I was at CV and saw this event. Regarding the cut scene, there is no doubt in my mind that it is original, not some sort of CG "SE" style newly filmed scene. It was very clear in person that it was a young Mark Hamill and the effects were original.

Secondly, at the Ben Burtt/Matt Wood sound panel, Ben Burtt showed some personal footage he took of the filming of the cut "sand storm" scene from ROTJ.

Yeah but that's basically what happens in ROTS. I don't think it's so much being a Sith that makes you inclined to kill your master but rather the person and the choices that he or she makes that ultimately leads to that point. I mean it's all about power, right? You rationalize every decision until there's no turning back and the only choice left is to take out anyone you see as a threat and may stop you and your power grab. It's kinda like Lord of the Rings only without a lousy MacGuffin.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the most telling exchange in the prequels, maybe the entire saga, that really hits home what Anakin's turn really means is between Obi-wan and Padme from ROTS...

Quote:
Obi-wan: Anakin is in danger-

Padme: From the Sith?

Obi-wan: From himself.

I've always had a problem with the seque at the beginning of ROTJ from the Emperor and Vader in the DS2 hanger (notice how there is a slight slow-motion blur just before the wipe) to R2 and 3PO taking a stroll towards Jabba's palace (in fact, I still have a lot of problems with most of ROTJ). There always seemed to be something missing in that transition, like there needed to be more of an establishing shot of the planet or something. This cut scene would fill that gap perfectly, and I think would have added to the tension of the following scenes rather than taking away from it.

In this cut scene, Luke doesn't say anything, like "Hey R2, remember to fling this at me when I give this hand signal," so that moment on the plank would still be exciting and applause-worthy. Hell, it's 35 minutes later in the film. I think they needed to have cut a bunch of other silliness in the Jabba scenes if they really had to slice 90 seconds somewhere. And we don't see Luke's face until he's inside Jabba's chambers, so there would still be a sense of mystery behind what Luke is up to and how he plans to rescue Han.

Anyway, I'm really hooked on this scene now and wouldn't be at all bothered if it was added back into the film itself (which it won't be; I'm sure the sheep would go apeshit if it was).

Joel, I think that's a little unfair.

The reason it was confusing is that, like Stewart, we assumed Skywalker was a unique name. That's generally how names work in the fantasy genre. I personally got that impression."There is another Skywalker."

(I'm going to assume that comment was directed towards me.) Confusing or ambiguous? Before Lucas' clarification you could easily read into the exchange between Vader and the Emperor that either a) Vader knew his son was still alive and tried to hide that fact from the Emperor in the hopes of making him his apprentice or b) the Emperor knew Vader's son was still alive and used this knowledge as bait to lure Vader into fighting and capturing his son for his master. Lucas pretty much states definitively now that Vader had no knowledge of his son's existence before the Emperor spoke to him about this.

I think too much is being made of this as there is precedence set up in the films that certain names in the Star Wars universe are common, take Antilles for example. In the films we've had three relatively prominent characters all with the surname Antilles: Bail Antilles, (TPM) Captain Antilles (ROTS & ANH) and Wedge Antilles (ANH, ESB, ROTJ).

You can obviously assume that Vader is trying hide that he knows Luke is his son in the new scene, but I don't like to. It makes Vader come off like an enormous ass. The original scene, it's like they both know the truth and they just go with it. Cool. Now it's just silly.

I'm not trying to be a jerk about this but why is it silly? Is it the reading/slight dialogue change that's tripping you up?

I only just found out about the deleted scene release. It's brilliant!

I'm curious if there will be any more deleted scenes with comparable impact. Since the Behind The Magic release, this was always THE still unreleased deleted scene.

I don't know about ETAndElliot4Ever, but I think it's silly to retcon the original films because of inconsistencies created by the new ones.

I can see both sides of the ESB phone call scene augmentation argumentation. I could go either way with it, personally. It is a bit silly to tinker with so much of the OT just to relate it further to the PT. Putting McD in as Palpatine makes sense, as he wasn't in the original cut. The dialogue changes don't bother me in this instance so much, however. The conversation does seem a tad "clunkier" than before, so I can understand the consternation.

Someday, technology will allow fans to piece together (like Lucas did once he went digital) thier favorite versions of performances, a'la Choose Your Own Adventure books from back in the dizay. Then, everyone will be happy, and we shall have peace. I have forseen it.
