This movie made my head hurt, but in a good way.

While the analysis of perception is a well-worn theme, Nolan’s in-depth and intelligent approach of the subject matter is unique.

Technically, the film is brilliant. Nolan ups the ante for editing with fast and logical intercutting between five in-movie realities.

Be warned that the first hour of the film is very expository. This isn’t a slight; as the film needs to be structured this way. Because the internal logic of the story is highly nuanced, Nolan needs the audience to understand the rules before he can push the envelope in the extraordinary final act.

It’s funny how you can identify a Nolan film by its look. Pfister and Nolan have a very specific way in which they light and frame shots. When the movie begins, it almost feels like Nolan is going back to visit Ra's Al Ghul in Mongolia.

In terms of performances, the intelligent cast is mainly solid. Unfortunately for them, the actors largely serve as a means for forwarding the story. There is an emotional pay-off for DiCaprio’s character, however.

Overall, I think Watanabe and Cotillard were especially good in the film. It’s possible that Cillian Murphy gives the best and most human performance. (I can’t determine if the outcome for his character is tragic, therapeutic, or both.)

In the end, Nolan continues his streak of good to extraordinary filmmaking. If The Dark Knight made him seem like one of the more important directors alive today, this movie confirms it.

I can't believe we didn't have a thread up earlier.

My take: amazing. I've seen it twice already and plan on going again (and again, and again, and again...). I know it has its detractors but whether you liked the film or not you can't deny Nolan is in a completely different league than his peers. Oh yeah, and the final shot is the best goddamn "Blade Runner" homage ever.

I didn't want to hop on the e-bandwagon of Nolanatics out there, but I'll admit, this does look fascinating and I intend on seeing it soon. Considering how lame-as-fuck this summers movies have been, I have high hopes and low expectations. But from what I've read (admittedly with blinders on, so I don't spoil myself too much), people seem to agree that it's a'ight. I guess I'll have to go and find out for myself.

There were other homages that I caught, but now I forgot them, now that I'm back home. The one I remember is:

I went in not even knowing what the movie was about and was pleasantly surprised, and I'll have to go back and watch a few other similar movies that are out there again. Don't read below if you've not seen it:

I never made it to the theatre to see this one. I've been checking the local 'Redbox' machines lately, and they only have it on blu-ray. Being cheap as fuck, I don't have a blu-ray player at the moment, so I figure wtf. $19.99 is 1/2 what it would have cost me to see it at the thatre, and I can smoke. So fuck it, I bought the DVD.

I like people. I don't want to offend too many of them without good reason. But what was all the hype about? It was okay. Maybe I'm missing something. I should watch it again to confirm my opinion.

I think a majority of my problem with this one is my disagreement with the idea that dreams are what they are portrayed as in the film. The resting mind is not just 'making shit up' in my opinion. We are geometrically compounding our consciousness when we release the focus our waking mind represents. That release of focus distorts the barrier between our thoughts and space/time. It's far more intense, and less Earthbound, than the maliable construct the characters were exploring. But that's just my opinion.

Still, it was visually very nice. A pretty film, yet it lost me at hello.

The characters were dull and the movie wasn't fun. This is basically what it came down to for me.
