Star Wars to be re-released in 3D

James Cameron has confirmed that Star Wars will be re-released in 3D.

Talking from the set of his latest blockbuster, The Avatar, Cameron confirmed Hollywood's commitment to the 3D format in cinemas with many older films getting converted for the full 3D experience including Star Wars and his own Titanic.

Following the success of Beowulf in 3D, more and more cinemas are upgrading and an increasing number of 3D films such as U23D and even Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus are being released this year.
Cameron's The Avatar will also be released in 3D. Still shrouded in secrecy, this sci-fi epic, starring Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi and Michelle Rodriguez, will be four years in the making and is set for a 2009 release

mintinbox.net caught Lucasfilm's Steve Stansweet at a German Con recently and the 3D subject came up during a Q&A:

LucasFilm is not planning anytime soon any Blu-Ray edition of the saga: LucasFilm and ILM are focusing their efforts to the 3D transformation of StarWars for theatrical release. More information about that by the end of the year.

Star Wars in 3D is gonna suck. I saw Clash of the Titans in 3D, and they couldn't really even pull that off.

Skywalker Sound Engineers Confirm They’ve Remixed Star Wars Again – For Blu-ray? 3D Theatrical?

Star Wars sound engineers Matt Wood and David Acord have spoken to this week’s ForceCast ... debating whether or not Obi-Wan’s scary roar was borrowed from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon called Dino Boy.

- "And, to be honest, that sound effect has been changed again. So at some point the audiences will be hearing that scene again with the new sound effect."

- "[We] decided it should sound even more human. And the human it does sound like… yeah, we’ll talk about that another time."

The sound FX discussion runs from around 53 minutes to 1 hour, 11 minutes.

I guess he's going to sound like Hayden now, which doesn't even make sense since all those tuskens were supposed to have been killed. As usual George and company don't actually think any of these changes through.

All this shit just seems to be a result of "Wouldn't it be cool if..."

Next thing you know, the whole entire trench run's been redone

"Because we thought it looked too 70ish and would be cool if it was CGI..."

There is absolutely no context that can explain why Ben's monster sound would be imitating Anakin. I don't get the fascination with changing the sound in that scene anyway. It was fine for nearly 30 years when it was the Patrol Dewback or Bantha sound or whatever the hell it was. In the magical context of the movie, it functioned perfectly wherein the wizard conjures up a monstrous sound to spook the Sand People.

Some people didn't get it, so it's gotta be changed.

The audience will recognize Hayden's emo voice and totally empathize with the sand peoples' terror.

"Sound even more human" doesn't necessarily mean "sound like a man or woman." You can also infer that the second part of the quote could refer to the actor/source of the sound as Alec Guinness has long since passed away and I doubt Ewan McGregor would make time to lend his talents for a two second audio drop.

In any case, I don't think it's going to do anyone any good debating the change since we haven't heard it yet. There'll be plenty of time for a postmortem bitch-fest following the (eventual) re-release. Just trying to keep things in perspective.

I would have thought Matt Wood would have done the new 'voice'

It doesn’t matter what the noise relates to as long as it is sounds as if it would scare the Tuskens.

That being said, it makes sense that the effect would be more human since its coming from one.

Anakin’s voice would make sense as well. However, I don’t remember him making a noise during the slaughter scene.
