Star Wars In Concert

Who is going to this? Me and my fiancee ... wait she will be my wife at that time, will be attending the one in San Jose.

I heard that the tickets are going to cost around $40-125 dollars.

Looks like a phenomenal event. Hopefully it'll make it to the east coast at some point. Until then, I'll have to make do with The Lord of the Rings at Radio City Music Hall.

The trailer from g4tv.com's ComicCon 2009 coverage. If the tour swings our way maybe perhaps.

This is primarily west coast, right? So that excludes me. I'd see it.

Looks like it starts out on the West Coast but the last few dates are in Oklahoma. Slowing moving east. I'd love to see it.

I hope someone at Lucasfilm has the bright idea to use this event as an excuse to release the complete remastered scores for all six movies.

THE CONCERT WAS AMAZING! If you are even considering going, i say do it. It was breathtaking and surreal. I kept having to remind myself that the music was being performed live. I was able to get the majority of the Imperial March encore on video from my iPhone.

Holy crap! They added a show near me. Now, if I can only get off of work in time. . .
swguru2004, where'd you sit? I'm trying to decided whether or not I should get the $55 or $75 ticket.

I sat to the right of the stage about 20 rows back. I was initially bummed out because I wanted to be closer, however in retrospect I think our seats were perfect. just far enough away to get a great view of the screen and still could see the orchestra. My wife would definitely agree with me. We payed the 75 dollar for the seats. Well worth the investment.

I wont embed this video because it might run the experience for you guys that are going to see it, but if you want a small preview of the awesomeness of what you are about to experience, check out this video

The Somnambulist: I actually was a little envious of the people on the edges of the stadium because they had a slightly elevated view of the orchestra and of the video. I am sure teh seats will be great no matter what. I look forward to hearing what you thought when is your showing

Nov 17th I'm going.

I was watching the making of the “Star Wars In Concert” on PBS this past weekend. It was on this past Saturday twice. Did anyone see it? In the 1/2 hour time slot, it lasted 22 of the 30 minutes where the other 8 minutes was filled with this PBS representative attempting to sell tickets to the show at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Anyway, at the end of the making of video, the editor who put all the "music videos" together for the show told us that in the North American part of the tour of the show will premiere digital Yoda in The Phantom Menace.

I was at a John Williams tribute concert done a few years ago by the local symphony. It wasn't just Star Wars but many of his themes and overall it was quite the experience. I'm looking into going to the Wilkes-Barre show on the 17th. Probably a smaller venue than some, but it's the closest drive.

I got my tix for 11/21 @ the Nassau Coliseum. Everything I've seen or heard about this has been positive. And after seeing the LOTR concert at Radio City Music Hall, I'm definitely stoked to see this.

The whole show was spectacular! The music sounded great and the audience was really energetic. We almost pulled a second encore, I swear.

One small thing that pleasantly stood out were the modifications made to Duel of the Fates (more percussion).

I wish they would have sprinkled more ROTS footage into the montages to make things more comprehensive, but that's a minor gripe.

You were right about the seating - the mid-priced tickets offered a better view of the stage plus a reduced concern over people with big heads.

I am now considering getting a hold of the A Musical Journey DVD released back in 2005.

I got row 10 tickets for Portland OR. It was great, I recommend getting up close, no spoilers, but getting up close is intense. Anthony Daniels looks the same as he did years ago. I heard from friends there was two encores in San Jose, but Portland was only able to muster one with The Imperial March.

It was fun to see the spirit of everyone there, lots of tee shirts and costumes, little kids in Halloween gear. The kid in front of me in line was wearing his Commander Fox getup. Although a guy sitting next to me was outed by his girlfriend as not having seen all the movies, I gave him the appropriate stink eye and shifted in my seat away from him.

A great collection of material is presented and the band was great. A highlight is the Jazzy Cantina song, these musicians are very versatile. If it's coming to a city near you, do yourself a favor and see this if you can!

Trust me on this one ... if you own the Musical Journey on DVD, it's not worth a big investment of $$$ on your tix. This is, essentially, a live version of the DVD. Even Anthony Daniels' lines are ripped (almost) entirely from the DVD. It's not a bad show, but it's hardly exceptional ... especially if you've seen the DVD or the LOTR: FOTR shows. Star Wars In Concert is a clumsy production. The music is FABULOUS ... but the video is lame (see: the Musical Journey DVD) and the lightshows do more to detract from the live music than enhance it. If the LOTR concert was an "A" grade, then the Star Wars shows was a "C."

I was never a big fan of the Musical Journey DVD. The music itself sounds fantastic, but the various "music videos" were kind of lame. The PT looked like more of a cartoon than ever before when its footage was edited in alongside stuff from the original films. The use of dialogue was silly at many points. In "Luke and Leia", playing audio clips of the characters saying each other's name, for instance. "Luke!" "Leia!" What the hell?

I would have liked to have seen this if I wasn't forced to work retarded hours in these economically awful times. But really, I looked over the set list for the show a while back when it was first revealed and let out an exclamatory "yawn". It's mostly the same stuff we've heard a million times before. Why the hell not something else? A live "Final Duel" from ROTJ with the chorus? Why not even the finale and end credits from ESB for Christ's sake? You know, as opposed to the overplayed Star Wars throne room/end titles concert piece. Well, I know John Williams likes to pretend "Han Solo and the Princess" no longer exists.

I kinda expected something *new* for this show and when I realized it was, essentially, recycled material (the arrangements and video are almost entirely from the Musical Journey DVD), I was very disappointed. No matter how many lights or lasers you have, you still have to give your audience something they cannot experience anywhere else. And there's NO WAY that the "Luke & Leia" theme is a musical high point for the series. It's easily one of the more forgetful themes, and should have been replaced by ... well ... anything ... even Jabba's theme would have been more interesting.

I think the *only* new musical moment in the concert (that wasn't on the DVD) was the Flag Parade, featuring footage of the podrace. Though, I cannot remember if that was actually on the DVD or not (I'll confirm that tonight or tomorrow). Not to shill my own work too much, but why not remix the music into new or different arrangements for the concert? At the very least, give the audience something they haven't experienced before. But to make the whole show a live version of an already-released DVD? :what:

Yeah I guess Williams just either didn't have the time or the energy to come up with anything new. I mean, for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (of all films) he composed a wonderful new version of the Raiders March and even a concert version of Marion's Theme!

For Star Wars it's the same old stuff. Then again, perhaps Williams had more time/energy to compose new stuff for Indy in between scoring a bunch of boring cave/crypt/temple scenes. I know this is just a traveling concert, but what the hell. I'm starting to think the prequel scores were actually pretty mediocre. Some wonderful moments in between a lot of generic modern Williams underscore. Maybe I've just become a pessimistic asshole.
