ABC sets Lost fifth season premiere date.

Lost is coming back, and sooner than you might think.

Sources say ABC is scheduling a two-hour premiere for the fifth season debut of the Emmy-winning thriller on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The premiere will be preceded by a one-hour clip show (so three hours of Lost total).

That means Lost is returning to its Wednesday-at-9 p.m. time period. The most recent fourth season aired on Thursdays -- first at 9 p.m., then shifting to 10 p.m. after Grey's Anatomy returned to air following the writers strike. The new premiere date is also slightly earlier than last season.

ABC has lined up 17 episodes for 2009, which is one hour more than the show's now-standard 16-episode tally. The network added an extra hour to compensate for last year, which was cut short due to the strike. Also, yesterday THR reported that Reiko Aylesworth is in negotiations for a major recurring role on the show.

The recently picked up Private Practice is currently in the same slot and there's no word yet where it will go once Lost returns.

Can't wait to catch the 5th season of the best show on TV. No matter what people say of the second season and first half of the 3rd season, overall this show is awesome.

Lost Season 5

Info released at Comic Con in July:

Though Cuse and Lindelof were as elusive as always during the Q&A session, they did offer up a few hints about the coming season.

[spoil]
]1. The producers guaranteed that viewers will finally see Danielle Rousseau's story in season 5, despite the fact that the character recently died.

2. They revealed that Kate will see Sawyer again.

3. Vincent the dog will be back.

4. We will find out if Richard Alpert has four or five toes.

5. Desmond will be back.

6. Michael will not be back. He is dead.

7. Jin is not dead.

8. Ana-Lucia will be back. Flashback?

[/spoil]

However, the most exciting thing about the new season is that the writers are once again shaking up their storytelling techniques. They plan to tell stories on the island, off the island, in the past and in the future. When the season premiere begins viewers will have no clue when or where they are, which is just how the Lost masterminds like it.

This is the new Dharma clip for the promotion of Lost Season 5 that was shown at the Comic Con.

This is the first promo that aired on ABC. This is the same video as Hige's link above. I'm embedding it for convenience.

I love those posters. VERY reminiscent of the first season poster. I love the two sides of the story play here. As for the Fray trailer not bad. Wish Lost wasn't used in a Grey's Anatomy way by ABC (they used a Fray song a couple of seasons back in all of the advertising). Can't wait.

I'm watching the 4th Season again on Blu ray. Have to say this season might have surpassed the first season. It is just so good.

Hercules over at Aintitcool has seen the first 2 hours of Lost Season 5. Beware of spoilers!

The screener begins with a warning: Don't give away the major plot twists of the first two hours of “Lost’s” fifth season (airing Jan. 21). This proves limiting.

A few notes:

* The season begins (again) with an awakening and a record-player. And twitchy scientist Daniel Faraday will very soon throw a little meta-illumination on why producers like to begin season openers with that device.

* This line is uttered in the first season-five teaser: “We went through six carbon drill-bits and the last one just fried.”

* The flashbacks and flashforwards are gone and, I’m guessing (and hoping), gone for good. The show now moves freely between players, back and forward in time, no longer tied to one particular character for the length of an episode.

* The first hour is a corker, aggressively advancing the story in all kinds of directions.

* By far the most intriguing developments in the first two hours occur on the island. The second hour feels like a bit of a time-killer, focused on creating an obstacle that will keep The Oceanic Six from getting back to the island too soon.

* The most interesting part of the second hour may be something Ben says as he directs Jack to pack his suitcase.

* If you’ve been wondering if showrunner Carlton Cuse was just teasing when he hinted that the island may have moved in time, highlight some invisotext for a definitive answer. The Island did indeed move through time, though Cuse was not telling us a key detail about that move.

* Faces from past episodes turn up at unexpected moments. (Hopefully the names of those playing these characters will be left out of the opening titles to preserve the surprises.)

* Characters we don’t see in the first two hours: Jacob, Christian, Charlie, Claire, Boone, Shannon, Michael, Walt and Smokezilla.

* A character referenced since season two but not actually introduced until his or her appearance in the mobisodes (the ones compiled on the new season-four DVD set) plays a memorable role in these two hours.

* The two clips we’ve seen featuring Jack, Ben, Kate and Aaron are from the first 15 minutes of the first episode:

* How does hour one end, spoiler-boy?
“Oxford,” Penny Widmore is told.

* How does hour two end, spoiler-boy?
“Then God help us all,” Ben Linus is told.

:lost:

This season is turning into my favorite. Even back in Season 1 there were episodes that just felt like filler. Episodes to pad to get to the 22-25 episode mark for a full season. This season has done away with that. Every episode so far has been chock full of information and moving along the storyline.

This is what I like so far:

[spoil]
The O6 are back on the island
Ben killed Locke.
Sawyers group have infiltrated the 70's Dharma Initiative
"Thanks alot Plato" and "Eyeliner guy"
Daniel Faraday is a creepy guy

I'm wondering whether the Ajira plane crash and Locke are still in the present day island. And if so how would Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Hurley and the rest get back to the present. How will Ben spin it to Locke about his reason for killing him? What was it Locke said in the Jeremy Bentham episode that set Ben off? Eloise Hawking? Jin is alive? Is the Abaddon character really dead? I loved the brief appearances we've had of him in the past season and a half and would like to think he has more to do in Season 5.2 and Season 6.

Honestly, I really loved this season until the last two episodes. I don't like them being stuck in 1977. It plays like a gimmick.

The Locke episode was the best. I'm starting to really dig Widmore.

It was too easy to figure out that Eloise was Daniel's mother though. What was funny was when they were on the island together when Dan tried to disarm Jughead.

You're right, Obi. Everyone left on the plane is in the correct timeline. They are thirty years ahead of Sawyer, Miles, Juliet, Daniel, Jack, Kate, Hurley, oh, and Sayid. It looks like Christian is going to try and help Sun and Frank.

What I don't understand is why didn't the flash pull Sun, Ben or Locke's body off the plane with the others? As far as Ben and Locke, I think Ben wants to rule the Others again. Locke is in the way. And I don't think that Ben knows that the island will bring Locke back to life. I think he is going to be shocked when he sees John alive.

Also, what is with Horace being the leader of Dharma? Where are the DeGroots? They were the ones who invented the damn thing. We never see them. I always felt that was their bodies that were found at the caves in the first season. One had a white rock on their person. The other had the black rock.

Did you see Radzinski? That's the guy who shoots himself in the Swan station when he's there with Kelvin. Also, Horace's son is Ethan. :monocle: So it just wasn't Ben who survived Dharma. I loved seeing the full statue. Too bad we didn't get a front view. But I just don't like this arc. When Locke fixed the wheel, I don't see how it didn't put them back to where (and when) they were.

And the whole thing about the Oceanic 6 coming back is iffy. John said the six of them had to go back because everybody they left behind suffered and died. According to Locke, none of them were supposed to leave. This is what caused al of the trouble. There's no evidence of this. They've all been fine for three years. If anything, Jack and the others coming back has simply caused more problems. Yeah, they are all in the wrong time period, but Jack and the others aren't the ones who can fix that problem. All of this was caused by Ben moving the island and screwing up the wheel. The mercenaries coming for Ben was the real problem, not the others being rescued.

This season for me has been so so with verging on being great. The last episode "Dead is Dead" was by far the best this season imo. Showing snap shots of Ben's past, how he was raised not only by the others but Charles Widmore himself! Seeing that not only will he do what is necessary for the island but also himself. One part that I loved is when Ben is talking with Sun and saying that he has never seen the island do what it has recently done and that it scares him to death. Dead is Dead he says.

So WTF does that mean for Locke? Is he like Christian in that the island chose to show itself through his body? The producers of the show even said when someone is killed on the show, which both Christian and Locke were, they don't come back. So what does that mean? I for one really like the new Locke, he seems to have something up his sleeve. He has a look on his face like he's the only one in on a joke and loves seeing that people don't even know there was a joke told.

And one last thing, what the hell was going on when the pilot got back to the other island and the people asking him what lies in the shadow of the statue? Are all these people sent by Widmore again and they were just waiting to get the gun case open or what?

And if we're to believe the hype, we'll see why the other LOSTies are stuck back in time and their purpose there...hopefully.

I don't think Locke is like Christian. Christian speaks for Jacob (which is going to turn out to be Jack), but he is still dead. Locke is as alive as anyone else.

I knew Ben would be shocked to see John alive again. He didn't expect that. He wants to return to being the leader of the others and Locke is in the way. I love that Smokey knew that he was going to try and kill Locke again and warned him not to.

The new crash survivors are starting to flip out. The only one that I think could work for Widmore is Ileana.

Caesar is history thanks to Ben.

The problem that I'm having with it lately is that they're basically saying that Sayid made Ben evil by shooting him. This is because Richard had to take young Ben to the temple where Cerberus/smoke monster lives in order to heal him. Richard says that Ben will “lose his innocence, never be the same, and that he'll always be one of them.” So older Ben gases everyone in Dharma except young Ethan and takes off to lead the others.

I don't like that.

What happened to Ben is seemingly the same thing that happened to Danielle's husband and the rest of their group. Why? Because they went down under the temple to rescue the guy who had his arm ripped off by Smokey. They came back different. They came back evil.

Personally, I was starting to like Widmore. He seemed like the good guy to Ben's bad guy. But then he wants to kill Danielle and baby Alex. So now I'm conflicted. They both seem to be scum.

Oh, and more and more I starting to think the temple might be an alien spacecraft. I’ve always thought that the others were simply descendants of the Black Rock, but now I’m starting to wonder.

Actually I blame Kate and Sawyer more than Sayid. Ben wanted to go with the Others long before Sayid ever pointed the gun.

He wanted to go and live with the others. That's it.

That's a long way from mass slaughter.

Ben was changed by Cerberus because Sayid shot him.

Yes but without kate and sawyer taking him there he would have been dead. That is all sayid wanted. So Kate and Sawyer have more to blame for him becoming an other. They didn't have to save him.

My point is that it is silly to put the blame for Ben's future behavior on anyone from Oceanic 815.

There seems to be a need nowadays to overdue the explanations for why evil characters are evil. Being nuts and/or power mad isn't enough anymore. Mommy had to take away your cell phone and Daddy had to stop buying you ice cream.

Well it's because the James Bond franchise has done it for so long (not given a background to the villain). People now want to give an origin to everything.
