I always liked River Phoenix. As a kid he was one of my favorite guys since I saw him in Indiana Jones. It was pretty messed up when my Mother saw me watching that scene and told me he had died. Unfortunately in the early 1990's he embraced the whole grunge rock thing and started hanging out with guys like John Frusciante. I guess from there it was all over. In the retirement announcement video, his brother reminds me of River late in his life when he was clearly doing drugs. what pisses me off are these so called "friends" that hang around these people and that CLEARLY know they're on the edge but they won't say a thing to help them. Casey Afleck is following Joaquin around now filming these antics, not doing a damn thing to stop it or intervene.

The same thing happened with Britney Spears, these hanger-ons that just want to milk as much money out of the sinking ship as they can before it goes under. These people are human beings, they need help, not encouragement.

Anyway, it's pretty clear that Phoenix is out of it, but from what little evidence is available, it's very possible that Affleck is simply protecting Phoenix's career by masking the real issue as some sort of media event.
