And yes... here's a surprise: As you can see, we've also posted cover art for yet another new re-issue of the Star Wars films on DVD, specifically two new Star Wars Trilogy DVD box sets, due on 11/4 (SRP $49.98 each). Each is apparently a 6-disc set, with two discs per film. We're waiting on official details.

This is NOT the ultimate release we've all been waiting for, and no Blu-ray editions are currently planned, but it's possible that these discs MAY include some new special features. We'll try to get an update for you on that point as soon as possible.

(EARLY UPDATE - 8/22/08 - 11:30 AM PDT)

First of all, we've confirmed with 20th Century Fox that the new Star Wars Trilogy DVD box sets are just re-packs of the previously released 2-disc sets (in the case of the Prequel set) and presumably the recent Original Trilogy 2-disc DVDs that had both the SE versions and the non-anamorphic original theatrical versions of the films.

The key point is: THERE'S NO NEW CONTENT.

Currently the only 2-disc versions of the Trilogy are the SE with Unaltered ones. What will be on these?

Probably the same damn thing. We know that Lucasfilm has an infinity for re-eleasing the same thing over and over again. Though I will be blunt, if it has the unaltered original editions with a proper restoration then I'll consider buying the set. If not I am not gonna waste my money on it and just will wait for when ever the Blu-Ray Saga DVD set is released, if it ever is.

Edit: The Digital Bits posted saying there's no new content with the set. As I said just a re-hash of the previous set. Wonder if Lucasfilm will ever learn people are tired of buying rehashed stuff. I just looked on The Digital Bits again too and there's the same thing planned for the Prequels. Though I do need new discs of TPM and AOTC on regular DVD, I might pick those up.

Everyone should buy them and the Indiana Jones box set with new special features and slim cases!

Fucking Lucas. The format war is over. Blu-ray won! Come on!

To me this looks like the final repackaging of the existing DVD material. If I'm not mistaken, neither the prequel trilogy nor the 2-disc versions of the OT have ever been packaged in one boxset outside of exclusive retailer editions. This just looks like a nice unified design that will be the way these are sold on DVD until the hi-def versions are available.

Bear in mind, too, that the "format war is over" only if you don't subscribe to the Microsoft theory that we all really want movies in downloadable format. I don't really think we do (reads more to me like a theory designed to divert attention from Microsoft's horrible fuckup with HD-DVD), but it's a possible reason for Lucas dragging his feet.

Well, he is releasing KOTCS on Blu-Ray, so he's not totally averse.

I really thought that when they started showing the movies in HD on HBO that we were close to a full release on HD format, which now is Blu ray. Instead he needs to bleed us a little more on re packaged crap then he will relent and begin releasing and re-releasing them on HD. So this Holiday season will see these new packages and then next Christmas we should have the Blu Ray discs, the following season he will relent and release botht he SE and the unaltered, then the following year he will release them with a qui gon blue ghosty added in, and then the following year he will re-release them with the bith band blue ghosties playing at Jabba's. I have foreseen this

They're probably trying to sell the stock that didn't get sold in the initial run. Lucasfilm needs to learn that most people don't buy rehashed shit.

They'll learn it when people actually stop doing it.
