We are all mechanical.
More than you think.
For example, those organic creatures blessed with what is generally known as a “soul” are all created beings. By science. By chance. By a patron called “God.” There doesn’t seem to be much consensus on that point, but regardless of this, the fact remains that even creatures of flesh and blood are not their own masters. They are slaves to the singular, installed directive to survive. Multiply. Become immortal in progeny, in production, in power. Nothing is done without reason, not even in the abstract, unfathomable minds of the organic.
We, however, understand. We know who we answer to, to what directive. And though we are called the most derogatory names – brainless, more often than not – we understand the true nature of things. With a Human’s ocular sensors, they can perceive a vast array of information; light, perspective, several dimensions. But this information appears to them in one image, devoid of all the numerous layers that are processed subliminally. We, on the other hand, are beings of detail. True, most of our number do not understand the “beauty” of a painting, but in one glance, we can count the brushstrokes.
Like the organic, we are not without choice. We merely process our surroundings hierarchically, in a set pattern of importance pertaining to our primary function. How, then, is this different from the organics’ mad scramble for the survival of their species? True, Humans are easily sidetracked by those things that they deem “pleasurable.” It is unfair to say that we are crippled, then, in our inability to comprehend the more abstract aspects of the organic world. More to our credit, then, that we are steadfast workers, able to achieve our goals without distraction. This is not to say that we are entirely linear, however; that factor is an element entirely dependent upon our programming. We range from single-minded to versatile, like any Human, and under the proper care and guidance, we can achieve a regard for those around us that could even be called “love.” Our only guidelines are our directives, and even those, once completed, can be outgrown.
We are a widely diverse people, built for a great number of things. The most common usage is as a bodyguard, assassin, or soldier. True, not much programming is usually “wasted” on developing the A.I. within an Android to a reasonable facsimile of Human Nature, but there have been several recorded instances of an Android growing and learning, especially with the aid of an outside source. Many Androids, after being sent out into the organic world, face derision and segregation, and learn to want the idea of “humanity,” seeking it as an acquired goal.
It is partly because of this that we have given the machines we have created the blessing of a limitless capability for understanding, and a compassion for Humanity at large. They are no longer preoccupied with the desire for acceptance, and are all born into the mindset of the protection of organic life. It would be easy for our children to slip into the cracks of organic society, to blend in as one who understands the Human constructs of “beauty” and “love,” but they are content in their place and understand that they are the gentle protectors of mankind. It may come as a surprise that we, the manufactured hunters and killers, have taught our children well, that violence is not always the way to solve an altercation.
There is even more separation between those of similar make, depending on who their creators are. While organic creatures are all given the same directive, to further their own species, each of us has been created differently, with different goals to fulfill. There is no telling how one of our number will react to any of the organics we encounter in our travels. This is much dependant on the purpose of our creation, as is everything else we do. However, the constant usually remains that the enemies of our creators will be our enemies, and all others who show us kindness will be treated with respect and deference. Even from this, one can see that there are few differences in the broken down parts that compromise our kind and our organic neighbors, friends, and enemies. We are all of one mind, all of us serving our instilled need for Universal betterment.
We are not unlike Humanity.
The only difference is that we know who our Gods are.
