Release Date: August 7, 2009
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Director: Stephen Sommers
Screenwriter: Stuart Beattie
Starring: Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui
Plot Summary: The movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

Although I haven't really kept up with G.I.Joe as well as I have with Transformers, as a kid TF and G.I.Joe were my bread and butter for cartoons. G.I.Joe is enjoying its 25th anniversary right now with new figures based off the original 80's figures. I've picked up a number of them myself. It will be interesting if this can come anywhere close to matching the success the TF movie had. But I hope it can.

New review of the third draft of the script from Latino Review. Exclusive: A Look At The Final G.I. Joe Script!
[spoil]
Reviewed by: El Mayimbe - 01.31.08

EL MAYIMBE STRIKES BACK! A LOOK AT THE FINAL G.I. JOE SCRIPT! LATINO REVIEW’S FIRST BIG SCRIPT REVIEW FOR 2008! ONCE AGAIN HERE WE ARE MAKING NEWS!

Rating: A+ A Complete Miracle

WOW! What a week for G.I.JOE! They cast HAWK, DESTRO, ZARTAN and they bring along G.I. JOE DEMIGOD LARRY HAMA along for the ride. The casting has been absolutely on point. Ok, so Marlon Wayans is an odd choice, but I’m diplomatic and will give him a shot. I read the first script by Elliot and Lovett, I then read the second one by Skip Woods, and FINALLY to bring it completely full circle, I just finished reading the third take by the best working genre screenwriter in Hollywood today – STUART BEATTIE!

What’s the verdict? A ****ING MASTERPIECE AND A LOVE LETTER TO G.I. JOE FANS! A+ THE THIRD SCRIPT IN THE TRILOGY IS THE ****ING BEST! HENCE THE $170 MILLION GREENLIGHT! THIS SCRIPT IS ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I WANT TO SEE IN A G.I. JOE MOVIE! Finally! Oh my God! Ok, so I am a little biased towards G.I. JOE…BUT Stuart Beattie’s craftsmanship has absolutely alleviated all my fears. From the bottom of my heart, I congratulate and tip my panama hat off to Paramount, Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, and Lorenzo DiBonaventura FOR ACTUALLY LISTENING TO US FANS. I have been asking for the longest from my previous script reviews that they get Stuart to write this and bring on Larry Hama and HOLY ****ING COW THEY DID! They actually listened! When I first came out to Hollywood, I went to a Hollywood bookstore and asked for the G.I. JOE script that was written in the early nineties. Could never find it. If anyone has, please it email it to me.

Where do I even begin? What rocks about this? Two words, actually three: ****ING SNAKE EYES! In one of the most precise castings of comic book movies ever – RAY PARK WAS BORN TO PLAY SNAKE EYES! When I read this, Ray was all that I pictured. The perfect marriage of an actor and words on the page! In this script, he is hands down the masked silent ninja commando bad ass they we all grew up reading in comics and watching on TV. The first beat, THE INTRODUCTORY HERO BEAT, in other words the first time we see Snake Eyes on screen will be memorable if executed according to the page! I was like OH ****!

A COMPLETE FAITHFUL TRANSLATION! ON BEHALF OF THE FANS, THANK YOU SO DAMN MUCH STU! Brian Goldner specifically said this movie would be based on the old Larry Hama Marvel run. Well, the Snake Eyes origin from Marvel is in here namely – THE ARISHKAGE CLAN. We see the HARD MASTER, SNAKE EYES, and STORM SHADOW! It is actually a subplot/back-story in the script. That’s all you need to know. No need in spoiling it.

Let’s talk about STORM SHADOW for a minute. He’s like BOBA FETT in this – a bad ass ninja assassin who actually kills a G.I. JOE character with his katana blade! Again another faithful translation. My favorite villain. YES FOLKS, A G.I. JOE IS GOING TO DIE! YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST! I WON’T SAY WHO! Don’t get me wrong, Destro is the diabolical, conniving, scheming, arms dealer who plays both sides for financial gain and is really cool. Zartan is the chameleon master of disguise. But I love Storm Shadow. Doesn’t say much. Has a chip on his shoulder like he always had. In screenwriting, he is a great character a dope writer would love to toy around with because of the complexity of the character. Not a one note villain.

What else do I like? It is really cool that they completely avoided any Arab conflict of any kind in this script. The script is completely universal to be enjoyed by audiences around the world in how they remembered G.I. JOE. It’s a straight up action adventure story of good guys Vs. bad guys. Just like the comic and the TV series. Nothing more. Nothing less. Simple and executed brilliantly. Out of respect for the filmmaker’s and Paramount, like I did with Transformer’s, I’m going to keep the spoilers lite. Let’s take a quick look at the first act.

We start off with a title card against black with a quote from GENERAL CLAYTON “HAWK” ABERNATHY – Whenever a new breed of evil emerges, a new breed of soldier must fight it. We are then in Paris, 1641. We meet a prisoner in Bastille Prison – JAMES MCCULLEN – a huge Scotsman with a proud defiance in his eyes, a RED SQUARE MEDALLION dangling around his neck. The prison guards take McCullen to the furnace where a priest reads the charges against McCullen. McCullen is found guilty of treason for the sale of military arms to the enemies of Lord King Louis XIII while he sold arms to the Lord himself.

McCullen played both sides and is getting punished for it. Before McCullen is sentences he swears that the Clan McCullen is bigger and far more powerful than the French could imagine and his legacy will continue with his sons, and their sons, and their sons. But McCullen is not sentenced to Death. The French want to make an example of McCullen for his treachery. Therefore, they pull out a metallic mask from the fire so that he shall wear it for his the rest of his natural life – THE DESTRO MASK. McCullen screams, they put on the mask around his face ala THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, and they melt the lock.

We are next at NATO headquarters in Brussels where we meet JAMES MCULLEN with the red medallion around his neck too, and like his great ancestor, the same proud defiance in his eyes. He briefs twenty two NATO commanders on NANOMITES – originally developed to destroy cancer cells but at McCullen’s MARS INDUSTRIES they discovered how nanomites can destroy anything. General Hawk is at the briefing and is not feeling McCullen. Hawk is there with his aide, a gorgeous German Lieutenant, COURTNEY “COVER GIRL” KREIGER. Hawk assures McCullen that his team is ready to transport warheads from his Mars Factory in KYRGYZSTAN.

We next meet the four man security detail convoy lead by DUKE and RIPCORD. Remember the opening of the 2nd G.I. JOE T.V. miniseries? THE REVENGE OF COBRA? When Duke, Scarlett and Flint and the Joe team escort THE LASEER CORE and COBRA ambushes them? Similar situation here. It’s our INCITING INCIDENT here. Duke and Ripcord’s convoy get’s ambushed and blown to smithereens by VIPERS – menacing foot soldiers clad head to toe in black battle armor and armed with fearsome pulse rifles. QUICK NOTE: Of course there are cool vehicles and such here being used by both sides, but for purposes of the review I decided to keep them out of the review for simplicity sake. Hell, they may not be the final vehicles that Hasbro sells but they are sure as hell in here like they were in TRANSFORMERS.

Who is leading these vipers and kicking serious ass? Long, slender legs in high heel black boots, the rest of her covered in black, form-fitting BODY ARMOR. She’s beautiful, exotic, and most of all, lethal. Her dark glasses glint menacingly – THE BARONESS BABY! Just as Duke is about to be smoked by The Baroness, on page 16, a HOWLER appears above them. Guess who comes to rescue? In the immortal words of Chud.com’s Devin… Ready for a geekgasm? Ladies and Gentleman, G.I. JOE geeks and fans around the world…I present this to you…A black-clad figure fast ropes down out of the Howler and lands behind a Viper and snaps his ****ing neck. Moving in a blur, he draws and buries a Katana blade into another Viper. Then he glances at the last Viper who’s lining up on him, too far away to reach with his sword. He quick-draws a Glock pistol! BAM! Right between the eye slit in his helmet – all this in the space of six breathless seconds. ****ING SNAKE EYES!

Duke glances at the almost mythical figure of SNAKE-EYES baby! Snake sheaths his sword on his back while holstering his smoking Glock. Red ninja clan markings on his triceps – THE ARISHKAGE CLAN LOGO FOLKS! Bad ass defined. As another Viper lines up a shot on Duke, a laser-like arrow bolt rips through his eye-slit and electrocutes him courtesy of SHANA “SCARLETT” O’HARA who fast ropes down from the Howler holding a gas-propulsion CROSSBOW PISTOL.

I’m not going to spoil the rest of this awesome sequence, but here we also meet LAMONT”HEAVY DUTY” MORRIS with his dual machine gun/ grenade launcher and ABEL “BREAKER” SHAZ wearing a computerized surveillance suit. Scarlett tells Duke that someone wants to meet him, a hologram of Hawk appears. THE CALL TO ADVENTURE. Where is HAWK broadcasting from? From a control room in THE PIT where Duke and Ripcord are then taken to in the Howler. The Pit is located in Egypt. Here we get the cool exposition where we find out that technically G.I. JOE doesn’t exist but if it did, it’d be compromised of the top men and women from the best military units all over the world. The alpha dogs. This seems realistic. How so? Folks, today we live in the era of BLACKWATER and the outsourcing of the military. If there was a G.I. JOE or an elite group of soldiers, it would most likely be like mentioned above. Ten nations signed on in their first year. Working together, sharing Intel. Now there are twenty three.

Well there you have it. A couple of more pages and Act 1 ends. Like I said, I wanted to keep the spoilers lite. What sucks about all this? That I have to wait a year and a half to see this movie. Damn. Hopefully they will have something at this year’s Comic Con. There is a part of me that wishes I didn’t read this and saw this movie with fresh eyes but, I rather you hear it from me, a dedicated Joe fan. This was the biggest reading pleasure of my entire career because I love this title so damn much. My favorite script of all time. Thanks again to the hard work of Stuart Beattie. You’re the man! At heart folks, I’m still that 10 year old that ran home in September of 1983 to watch the first miniseries on WPIX 11 in NYC. This was a dream come true for me and it will be for the legions of Joe fans around the world when this movie hits in August 2009. Some people are Star Wars geeks, some are Star Trek geeks, some are even Transformers geeks. I’m a proud die-hard red blooded G.I. JOE geek! SO NOW YOU KNOW! AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE! YO ****ING JOE BABY!

HASTA EL PROXIMO CAPITULO…YO SOY EL MAYIMBE![/spoil]

ComingSoon, IESB, and LatinoReview are all reporting that:

Left: Channing Tatum as Duke
Middle: Dennis Quad as Hawk
Right: Maron Wayans ( :XD: ) as RipCord

Wayans Brothers :whateva: The casting decision that gets me is Sienna Miller as Baroness. Baroness needs to be played by a brunette such as Eliza Dushku.

HissTank.com has a report on Hasbro and Paramount's Live action movie presentation at Toyfair.

[spoil]
The start of the preview featured Producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Hasbro's Brian Goldner and G.I. Joe Movie Director Stephen Sommers first comments on the filming and direction of the film.

They all had a look of pure excitement and you can tell the bar is really set high for this film from what they had to say. They really wanted to let everybody know we are getting a real deal G.I. Joe film. A lot of what was said was the same feel I got from reading the Live Action G.I. Joe Movie script. This film is set up so people who do not know what G.I Joe is all about get a nice back story explaining what G.I. Joe is along with MARS and Cobra with character background stories.

The film centers around a speachless Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-Hun Lee) and the female roles of The Baroness (Sienna Miller) and Scarlett (Rachel Nichols) play huge roles equal to if not more important then Destro (Chris Eccleston) and Duke (Channing Tatum).

What we got to see from the concept art, 3D renders and other production materials was mind blowing. The Costumes look more along the line of Hasbro's G.I. Joe Valor Vs. Venom Line more so then the Classic RAH 80's Series.

We got to see a nice eye full of Scarlett with a form fitting suit classic feel crossbow included (and used often in the film). There were a lot of others shown at the speed of light so it was hard to catch names but I would say Heavy Duty and Duke did flash by and they were very close to the VvV style.

Vehicles!!! Did I mention vehicles yet? There were a ton of concept art and 3D renders shown of the vehicles. There was at one point a full wall of just concepts showing what they will look like for the film. Each vehicle looks like an upgrade of old favorites we all as fans will instantly reconize. There were more than just a few shots of Military GM vehicles show. This is unofficial; but, with the huge connection to the Transformers films I would say they are on-board for the G.I. Joe Movie.

Vehicles for the Movie:

G.I. Joe Vehicles and More

Cougar - Patrol Vehicle
Grizzly - Armored Attack Vehicle
Howler (Attack/Transport Hovercopter)
The PIT (Egypt FTW You get to see the base and them train)
Jet Packs (J.U.M.P.)
G.I. Joe Battle Carrier Submarine (Shark Transport)
Shark (Many)

Cobra Vehicles and More

Typhoon GunShip (Attack Hovercopter)
M.A.R.S Factory - Destro's Base (Polar Ice Cap FTW what a great description of this place M.A.R.S. Logo On Everything)
Trident (Destro's Submarine)
Night Raven
Mole Pod (Buzz Bore)
Scarab (Baroness - Attack Vehicle - The SUV From Hell)
Mantis (Cobra Attack Sub)

There were many more shown at the Hasbro - Paramount preview. I will list the names and try to give you a description or each.

Cobra Night Raven was sick looking. They showed a lot of production material for this jet. It's used as Destro's personal air transportation and plays a key G.I. Joe plot point in the film that I will not give away. This attack jet gets serious screen time and is a complete upgrade from the cassic 80's RAH vehicle. When G.I. Joe fans see this in the film you will know exactly what vehicle it is.

Scarab - The Baroness has a killer SUV that is included in a huge city battle sceen.

Shark There will be many of these in the film and they showed a 3D render of one in the making. It looks to be really close to the original in shape but had no skin attached to the 3D render so it was hard to tell.

Polar Battle Bear - Unofficial Name - Very good 3 person upgrade to the classic RAH vehicle.

Trident or G.I. Joe Battle Carrier Submarine was shown and looked like the future of a realistic nuke sub.

Howler (Attack/Transport Hovercopter) or Typhoon GunShip (Attack Hovercopter) was shown. The only 2 vehicles that come close to a description is the Sigma 6 DragonHawk, but not as big and is more Jet then Copter.

Destros M.A.R.S. Base was amazing. It looks to be massive and have both underwater and above ground sections to the base. There was so many things going on in those images its hard to put down into words.

There was also a 3D downtown city battle shown with Neo-Viper fighting the Joe Team. The Neo-Vipers were in very Classic looking red body armor while the Joe team was sporting the new power suits that make them be able to run and jump fast and higher and boost human power. Hi-Tech was show in the command vehicle giving the Joes intel for the mission.

From what I can tell from all the information gathered we will see more then the confirmed cast and crew of the film. There is a lot of room for NON-speaking G.I. Joe's and Cobra's to show up. I fully expect the film to be riddled with easter eggs and Cameos. Its going to be a huge mix of Sci-Fi meets Military. So do not be let down by the core small teams because there is going to be a lot in the background going on to make up for it.

With that I just want to send out a huge Thank You to Hasbro, Paramount and the G.I. Joe Team for such an unexpected treat at this years event.

First image of Sienna Miller as The Baroness from JFXOnline

    Image

Supposedly the scene this pic comes from is a flashback in the film before she has joined M.A.R.S./Destro and become "The Baroness" which is why she has blonde hair. EDIT: Sienna Miller was interviewed on Access Hollywood.com where she revealed that she will indeed have black hair and a black leather costume for The Baroness. :wicked:

Another image from JFXOnline. This time with Channing Tatum as "Duke".

Since principle photography recently started we can expect the pics and news to start flooding in from here on out.

Say hello to Snake Eyes — just don't expect him to say anything back.

This is the first character reveal from next August's G.I. Joe movie — the mute, faceless, black-clad ninja commando, among the most famous of the good guys from the 1980s incarnation of the decades-old Hasbro toy line.

Just as Paramount breathed new life into the Transformers franchise last summer, the studio is hoping to do the same to this sci-fi soldier series about a team of military experts battling the villainous Cobra organization.

G.I. Joe refers to the team, not any one person, and Snake Eyes is its mysterious lone wolf. In the movie, shooting now and set for August 2009, this fearsome figure is played by Ray Park (Darth Maul in the first Star Wars prequel).

"He's the world's greatest ninja, but he's also next-generation. He's not afraid to use a sword one second, and a split-second later he's pulling out his Glock," says director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy and Van Helsing). "His chief nemesis is arguably the world's other great ninja, Storm Shadow. The two grew up together, were blood brothers and now are mortal enemies."

Channing Tatum (Step Up) plays all-American team leader Duke. Rachel Nichols (Alias) plays the crossbow-wielding Scarlett, Marlon Wayans is paratrooper Ripcord and Dennis Quaid is the commander, Hawk. On the evil-doer side, Sienna Miller plays the raven-haired Baroness, Christopher Eccleston is Destro, the arms dealer who hides behind a silver mask, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock From the Sun, Brick) plays multiple roles, including the Cobra Commander.

Depending on which decade you grew up in, the name G.I. Joe can mean very different things. Hasbro initiated the G.I Joe line as 12-inch dolls in the 1960s, with generic figures representing the U.S. military branches.

The franchise was relaunched in the '80s with smaller action figures, new heroes featured in comic books and a popular after-school cartoon.

Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura also is overseeing this project. He says the appeal then, as now, is broad, across race and even gender. (G.I. Joe was one of the few toys for boys that had female characters.)

"There are quite a few characters in it, and almost certainly a character in which an audience member can see themselves, or want to be," he says.

Sommers stresses that the movie is an origins story, so his challenge is to explain why the bad guy wears a metal mask, why Snake Eyes doesn't talk and other strange things kids took for granted. "For people who know nothing about it, it'll make sense," Sommers says. "And to people who love this stuff, it'll show where they all came from."

Ah, very cool! I like that pic much better, but the lighting does make it look slightly computerish for some reason. It's certainly a faithful recreation of the costume. Can't wait to start seeing more on this.

I don't agree with many of the casting decisions. However, I have to admit it has potential.

Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow will need to go at it at some point. And Zartan needs to be cool.

Fuckin' A! Snake Eyes looks pretty fantastic, especially in that last pic.

And I agree with Darth Hade -- a fight between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow would be excellent.

well I think this film will lie on how retarded Destro and Cobra Commander look. If they're cool looking and keep to the history, then it will probably do good. But if they look like:

Then it will bomb.

Well here's some good news. According to this site Alan Silvestri has been attached to the film. So he should produce a good score. :)

Sexay is sexay! I was kinda hoping her costume would have some color like the original but why complain when it accentuates her ass so nicely. Can't wait to see the Baroness. :bounce:

Still I hope not everyone is going to be in black leather ala the X-Men.

I gotta Road Block for her! Her suit is very New Batman outfit. Give her a cape and cowl!
I was on board for this movie the second they said, "GI Joe". I don't think it could be bad. Even if it sux, it will still be pretty good. Ray Park was a smart & fantastic cast on their part.
Casting hot chicks never downgrades movies either!

Many Pix of EVERY major character. Storm Shadow, without the mask :( :armshead:

Direct Link - GI JOE IMAGES Disabled pic-saving, so if someone could leach the pix, that'd be great :)

Um... that was quick. In regard to Stormshadow, I can learn to live without a mask. The trench and the haircut are kind of goofy, however. What's up with Snake Eyes having a nose and mouth on his mask?

The Snake Eyes I know from the 80s has always had a very skin tight mask so every action figure and every pic I remember was always showing the nose and mouth under it.

Funny thing about Ray Park, what doesn't he look cool in?

You could dress him as a clown balerina and somehow that muthafucka will make it look cool.

Yeah, Ray will be great. After all, he's basically playing Darth Maul again. :)

Well looks like they're keeping things pretty good looking as far as costumes go. Seems to be on the right track. Hopefully it turns out to be a good movie.

This has "Mortal Kombat" written all over it.

I see the future, and it is a techno soundtrack.

I think it was reported Alan Silvestri is attached to the project. I hope the remains true, if so it could have a very good score then and hopefully not too much techno crap.

It's odd how much Christopher Eccleston resembles Desrto.

I wonder if the movie will be true to Snake Eyes' and Cobra Commander's look?

Yeah, there are definitely a lot warning signs with this film. Personally, I’m more worried about Steven Sommers than I am about some of the casting choices or the costumes. His movies are average at best.

I think the movie will turn out okay if a) Sommers doesn’t venture too far from the reportedly true-to-the-source script, and b) the producers and Larry Hama enforce quality control over the end product.

I like how in practically every movie these days there are cars being flipped left and right. Romantic comedy? Flip a car! Indie film about incest? Flip a car!

Ok that said, I like that last video. Nice car flips in that one. :D

Thanks for posting those!
