This looks to be a visual treat, starring digital incarnations of Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie.

Is it me, or does it look like Final Fantasy The Spirits Within?

I'm still convinced I'm the only person outside of Japan that thought that movie kicked ass, for it's time anyways. This does look a lot like the Spirits Within style, but far improved. The character animation looks a lot less jerky and more natural. And from the looks of the trailer they seem to be staying true to the actual story, which I had assumed would be butchered in a feature film format. I had no idea the whole thing was going to be digital. That gives me hope that it will be good. Can't believe I completely missed the 'digitally animated' bit when first hearing they were making it.

I expected shitty hack-job, but this looks pretty decent. Grendel is creepy.

Wow. I'm actually psyched for this movie (although it looks like they took Angelina's head and put it on someone else's body) it looks pretty kick ass. But the last line of the trailer with the I AM BEOWULF!!! Reminds me of THIS IS SPARTA!!!! Wonder if the net will be induced again with the youtube clips with that dudes head now.

Hrm, didn't much like that trailer. The earlier one I didn't even notice it was digital versions of the actors (which is good), but this one looked like a big cartoon. Which, for a movie from a historical epic adventure story, looks just wrong.

I saw an early screening of this tonight, and I have to say the film's shining points are in its CG rendering. The visuals blow previous films like Final Fantasy and The Polar Express out of the water. Character detail and performance is amazing. Angelina Jolie shines in her digital nakedness. The story, however, does not come across as the timeless tale one might expect from an adaptation of the epic poem.

I saw it in 3D projection as well, and having seen Harry Potter & A Nightmare Before Christmas this way, I'm unfortunately being persuaded that this is a failed gimmick. The effect is either very convincing, or very poor. The majority of scenes feel 'layered' rather than truly dimensional. Action suffers from annoying flickering, similar to aliasing in game engines. But again, when the effect works, it works splendidly. Beowulf is very much centered around ways to flaunt the technology.

Though I do have to admit that I'm looking forward to the experience one more time, and I'm seeing it in IMAX 3D tomorrow. If the technology improves down the road, Star Wars will be awesome. But if it stays how it is now, then I hope the 3D fad passes sooner rather than later.

Please. I am so sick of hearing how great this "New 3-D technology is. This is self masterbatory bullshit. And it looks like crap. All the characters look like the walking, soulless dead with their vacant eyes.

And I hate them for it.

I’ve some friends surprise me not liking Beowulf. Like New York actor they came away from the movie w/ a negative opinion. These guys I knew thought the animation was corny and story not so interesting. I thought it was great. Beowulf consistently had great lines that most times I thought were clever and voiced well by Ray Winstone. I had not read the book in high school for whatever reason and so the story was new to me and I thought good, although I read the movie and old book don’t quite jive. I didn’t expect it to unfold as it did. The thought struck me funny how this calamity seemed to only really impact the merry making in the Meade hall but otherwise it was business as usual in town. John Malkovich’s character was a stand out for his beating of servants and interest in the “new Roman God, Christ Jesus”

I guess I found it to be dumb entertainment, but entertainment nonetheless. I liked it.
