Could be just the evolution of the Joker through the movie. Starts off in the crow style look, little more thuggish, then as the movie progresses he takes on the new persona to the head of a crime 'syndicate'.

I think that the scarring just isn't as gruesome as the initial sneak peek shot lead people to believe. It was an extreme closeup after all.

There's a big debate now as to whether or not the Joker's clown look is self-applied makeup.

In all the spy shots it's clear that the white stops at his jawline.

I have a feeling that Nolan is going for the idea that the cut smile is what causes him to take on the insane clown persona rather than a chemical bath that bleaches his skin.

A lot of hardcore Batman fans aren't too happy about it.

The "chemical bath" is still a possibility, Verboten. Jett (Founder/Editor-in-chief of BOF) had the below input about this topic:

Jett wrote:
Remember my guy "Slappy?" His scoop was that "The Joker would have greyish skin with lots of scars." That was poo-pooed, laughed at, and made fun of, right. Well, The Joker HAS scars as he said. Heath is clearly wearing white makeup, red lipstick, and black around the eyes. HE'S WEARING MAKEUP -- "The Joker" -- TO LOOK LIKE THAT. WHITE makeup, not gray.

**Jett needs to shut the hell up**

Jett wrote:
The last thing I'm going to say is this (which I've said over and over):

The Joker in TDK is, IS, "THE JOKER." Probably moreso than we've ever seen on screen, animated or live-action.

Here’s one last set pic:

Not really spoilers but fun anyway. I got this over at Cinematical

Maggie Gyllenhaal Trash Talks Katie Holmes

"I'm not thinking of it as a role that anyone's played before. I'm not walking into Katie Holmes' performance. I'm thinking of it as an opportunity to play somebody who's alive and smart. Chris (Nolan) asked me to do this because he wanted me, not because he wants some generic lady in a dress."

it's only the batsymbol being lit up from behind with Bruce talking to Alfred. Then at the end we hear the Joker say: "Starting tonight, people WILL die. I'm a man of my word, ha hahahha" He has a low raspy voice. no high pitched laugh at all.

Is it just me or does Heath's voice remind anyone else of the one Keaton used for Beetlejuice?

I don't know why, but I really wasn't expecting him to use a different voice.

The more I listen to it the more I like it. It's deep and raspy but also has a squeaky quality to it, which seems very fitting for the Joker. Love the laugh too.

Yeah, ditto the above. Mind you, the sound/video quality is total shit so it could just be the SUPER AWESOME mic on the camera phone he's using.

Either way, much what I expected way to far out to be giving away money shots.

There was a poster on another board that said that Joker is most likely mocking Dent with the "I'm a man of my word" line. Makes sense and might explain the Beetlejuice style Southern accent.

I wonder why Joker has it out for Dent, anyway? Maybe they're doing a Cape Fear type thing where Dent screwed the Joker over in a trial years ago or something.

On G4 they said dollar bills were circulating at ComicCon that looked eerily like the Joker. They also named a web site: http://whysoserious.com/

Well the Youtube video has already been taken down. Hope you saved it. The website above ^ gives coordinates for San Diego. It's probably when the trailer goes online tomorrow, or maybe something huge who knows! Their marketing guy should be given a huge raise for coming up with all this shit! Good Job

To me, the voice fits with Nolan’s vision of the Joker. Specifically, it’s creepy and very different from the other onscreen characterizations.

Also, Bale uses a “raspy” voice when he’s in the Batsuit. So, the two compare nicely to one another. (This also makes me wonder if the croaky voice in the trailer is the Joker's "real" voice or simply his "Joker voice.")

I agree with the Beetlejuice comparisons as well (Beetlejuice Sound Clip).

Overall, I find the dialogue pretty interesting. First off, the Joker’s impending death spiel reminds me of the below panel from Batman #1:

Image

Secondly, we finally understand what Nolan means by “escalation.” The Gotham cops are working with Batman and now the mob appears to have solicited the Joker as a response.

At this point, I wonder which mob faction Joker is working with (Maroni?). I also wonder if the Joker is really a hired gun at all. He may simply be implying that he is aligned with the mob in order to ratchet-up the confrontation between the police, crime factions, and Batman. As other have speculated, he could be undermining all sides equaling in order to create pandemonium for his own means.

Verboten wrote:

The antagonism between Dent and the Joker doesn’t have to relate to a personal history. Dent wants to bring law and order to Gotham while the Joker wants chaos to rule. It’s only natural that these two wouldn't like one another.

now there's online "challenges" at the above site. it's still got 4 hours left till all is revealed but it says you'll have to work together in teams, people on land looking for stuff and people online getting the clues. this rocks

His voice does sound better in this version. Especially the laugh at the end. I'm even more stoked about this now than ever. I LOVE BATMAN!

and about the new pic. it's obviously makeup. now the question is, is this a progressive turn to the Joker or is this it? Does he start out just putting makeup on and then gets hurt somehow and actually turns into that permanately or is he just going to wear makeup and that's the Joker? I hope it's a slow turn. a buildup. ESCALATION, as the ending to Begins told us.

Actually, I remember seeing a picture of The Joker after the bank robbery when he was wearing that mask. He was walking away from the bank and looked completely normal.

I think it is a process that we see happen over the course of time in the film. I can't wait to see what happens but I also hope it doesn't take too long for him to become THE Joker.

a full description of what went down today:
"The International Comic-Con began yesterday, and found on the convention floor were phony dollar bills (see here) with clown makeup scribbled over George Washington, and the message "Why So Serious?" sheep everywhere visited www.whysoserious.com to find a defaced "I want you!" poster (here), and a Joker-esque message encouraging people to apply for a "job." There was a clock ticking down to noon today, and a set of coordinates (which pointed to an area just outside the convention).

A later update revealed that fans who showed up there when the clock hit zero would work together with fans online to some end. When the time came, the hundreds of fans who showed up were all painted in Joker makeup, and moved from checkpoint to checkpoint getting clues to help solve the puzzles for those online. Finally, when all the checkpoints had been reached, one fan was selected (by what means I'm not sure; perhaps he wast the first there) and driven away in an SUV with Gotham City plates.

Online, with the last puzzle solved the teaser trailer (here) was revealed. Shortly afterwards, a mock police report appeared, featuring a photo of the selected fan, having been "killed" (here). The police report mentions him holding the note "See You In December,"

Image

Prior to this, two other police reports also appeared on the site (here and here), as well as this picture of The Joker (Ledger), and Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

The puzzles have since been removed, and displayed on the website (http://www.whysoserious.com/) is the final page (which was originally displayed only once the puzzles were solved). You'll notice a little flashing pixel--if you click it, it brings you to the trailer page, which includes a hi-defionition download."

who else called this number? 1-800-395-9646 it was the first "clue" given at the scavenger hunt. talk about creepy shit. very well acted. some dude is kidnapped and supposedly the Joker, (you don't hear the Joker, just the guy responding to him) is telling him what to tell us to do. Good stuff

also, if you go to the site now, it's at the end page where you can view a HD streamed version that's only 6MB, so that might be an option for you too.

LOVE THAT JOKER

Great teaser to go along with a very smart marketing campaign. A little thought can go a long way in building hype.

Latino review Has some new spoilers

[spoil]
* THE BATMAN WANNABE: There’s a fake Batman roaming the streets of Gotham City. He's 'for' the cops, they believe that he's the real Batman. And it's a connection to the Batman Begins scene with Bruce, Henri Ducard, Ra's Al Ghul and many ninjas, the 'invisibility' scene.
* THE BAT-POD: The “motorcycle” is not a part of the Thumbler (the ‘Batmobile’ vehicle Batman drove in Batman Begins), it's another Lucius Fox's gadget. The Bat-Pod has one big action sequence in the film.
* TWO-FACE: Many have clamored for information since it was revealed that Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) will become Two-Face in The Dark Knight. However Two-Face has only one scene, which comes at the end of the film.
* RACHAEL DAWES: Remember the Joker’s dialogue in the trailer? TONIGHT PEOPLE WILL DIE, I’M A MAN OF MY WORD” It’s from a big party scene where the Joker (Heath Ledger) kidnaps Rachel Dawes (now played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) and she tells the Joker that Bruce Wayne is The Batman. However Batman has a scene in the film with the Joker and through some trickery has The Batman and Bruce Wayne in the same room. This causes Joker to think that Bruce Wayne is NOT Batman and that Rachel lied to him. Rachel is also having an affair/having a romance with one of the main characters of the film and, no, it is not Bruce Wayne.
* THE BIG FINALE: Someone dies - a main character dies. We aren’t going to tell you who dies but what we can say is that promotional materials already reveal who dies, you just have to look for it. You can slice through Latino Review’s Dark Knight photos and find the huge clue? IT COULD! However this is a big fight at the end in which Harvey wants his revenge, wants to kill The Joker, but Batman stops him and Harvey is going crazy. And now he is against The Batman.

The Joker now knows that Bruce is Batman, but Harvey does not.

[/spoil]

sounds good

That's cool, DP. That's one thing I appreciate about these new batman movies, the vehicles are actually MADE and can perform some of their own stunts. They're not just interiors and then cgi'd in later doing jumps and turns.

Maybe you can do some of your Ninja skills like you did on Batman Begins and get the script, DP! ;)

The Batman Begins script was actually leaked semi-publically at the SuperHeroHype forums and all one had to do was private message a member for a link. Only here at MF when we got the script it was posted publically because thats how we roll.

MF got attention due to some *very early* behind the scenes photos thanks to malkie: malkie.

The Transformer script was were I had to use ninja skills or at least had to invoke MF's name at the tfw2005 forums where it was horded amongst forums regulars. There was paranoia tfw2005 thanks to heat by Don Murphy & Co. Luckily one of the members who had it was a MF fan. The Prime Directive Script was later leeched from here by deriative MF sites like :gb2xboards:

Hopefully, The Dark Knight script leaks soon.

Also, can't wait to see the Batpod in action

when it does, do post it hear please. i've been keep an eye and ear out for the script and its been really tough to find. word has it that not one person has the complete script and of the fwe bits and pieces that goes around the script was printed on brown paper (to make it difficult to scan they said). the closest we ever got to a "script" were the Casting Sides, and again that isnt much to go on.

HUGE Wizard World news from SHH

[spoil]The footage started with a silhouette of a dark figure in front of one of Batman’s armored vehicles before quickly cutting to Bruce Wayne and Alfred delivering the brief lines heard in the “Dark Knight” teaser trailer.

“Some people just want to watch the world burn,” advises Alfred before the camera jumps to Batman in action on the Batpod, the new iteration of his motorcycle.

The action built up as the Joker was seen in full for the first time with a mess of white face, smeared red lipstick and sweaty, straggly green hair. Apparently, the clown prince of crime gets arrested at one point in the film, as the montage presented Jim Gordon (complete in SWAT gear) at the Joker’s booking, saying, "no prints, no ID, custom clothes, no tags.” The clown smiles with what appears to be blood over his face from the inside of an interrogation room.

Checking back in with Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy has a brief scene with Eckhart’s Harvey Dent where he says “Rachel’s told me everything about you.”

“I truly hope not,” responds Wayne.

The footage sped up at that point into an intense montage of action, featuring the following clips:

- The new batsuit rising up from a trap door in the ground and held in a chain metal case.

- Rachel Dawes (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) close to an unidentified man either kissing him or being threatened by him as the camera rotates around them.

- The Joker and Batman battling in close quarters (possibly a hospital room). Batman throws Joker over a table and crashing into the ground while the clown smiles at him. It should be noted that the Joker was done up in his signature purple suit.

- Plenty of big, bold Batmobile action including a shot where the tank-like car drives through a wall of flame. In fact, flames were pretty much everywhere in the footage as it appears Joker does actually make the world burn.

- There is also a shot of a somewhat grim-faced Joker walking across a city street mercilessly firing a machine gun as well as a television close-up of the Joker laughing hysterically.

- Two major additions to the speculation that Two Face will appear in the film came in the form of a single shot of a spinning 50 cent piece and the final image: after the action montage has slowed down, the camera cuts to a bartender looking at Harvey Dent, whose only onscreen presence is his left shoulder and a bit of a reddish-purple scarred neck. “Dent! I thought you were dead!” the man gasps, to which Harvey replies, “Half.”[/spoil]

spoilers
A few more plot spoilers have surfaced.

[spoil]# Harvey Dent reveals himself to be Batman at a wild press conference at Superior Court Dent.

# The National Guard patrols through downtown Gotham.

# At Wayne Enterprises, a new character named Reese (played by Joshua Harto) tries to blackmail Lucius Fox using Batman’s identity.

# Bruce Wayne discusses his plans for Lau (played by Chin Han) with Lucius Fox. But the real question is, who is Lau?

# Someone breaks in to the Wayne Enterprises’ Research and Development, and Fox is notified.

# Jim Gordon explains “just enough” to get Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to issue search warrants. For what, we don’t know.

# Jim Gordon tells Commissioner Loeb (played by Colin McFarlane) that his life is threatened, Loeb drinks to that.

# Harvey Dent promises the Mayor a crime-free 18 months right before a fake Batman hits the Mayors Office window.

# A fake Batman dummy hangs from the flagpole outside City Hall.

# Jim Gordon tries to get Reese out out of the street entrance of a tv studio, but an angry mob appears. Bruce Wayne serves as a distraction. I wonder what Reese was doing on TV? May-be he was there to reveal Batman’s identity? But if so, why would Bruce Wayne help him out? The actor playing Reese (Joshua Harto) looks pretty young. May-be he’s an up-and-coming reporter who somehow figured out Batman’s true identity? But this still doesn’t explain why there is an angry mob awaiting his exit from the building.

*The fake batman thing was proven correct today with the released images[/spoil]

I've decided I'm not going to watch any trailers before I see this movie. I don't want to be completely ruined before seeing this. They give away too much in trailers now. All the plot points and suprises and money shots are given up in advertising. I want to sit there in the theater and have no idea about the ending or the big twists. I'm going to have to lay off posting all these damn spoilers though!
