ATTACK OF THE CLONES • Jay Laga'aia on Vader & Live-Action Series

Image
(photo: Celebration III 2005)

EXCERPT:

"Just thought I would give you a quick report from the opening day of Star wars Weekends 2007 at Disney's MGM Studios. As originally reported, (...)

I had a chance to see the short documentary "Behind the Force," which was narrated by Jay as well. During the behind the scenes look, Jay jokes that he was available for the televison show. I had a chance to ask Jay about whether he had actually mentioned this to George Lucas, and he told me he had. Jay told him that he would be willing to play any character, no matter how small.

However, he was informed that the only returning characters necessary would be Darth Vader and a few others, but that anyone could be in costume for them."

Thanks for the heads up. Jay Laga'aia is indicating that Vader will appear in the Live Action series which is awesome news. According to some reports, Hayden Christensen has indicated he would like to reprise his role for the series, as would Peter Mayhew, and Anthony Daniels.

Hopefully Vader won't be a recurring character. And Mayhew rocks!

I always liked the concept of 'highlighting the background characters' or whatever it was they originally said this series was going to be about. Theres a lot of versatility storywise in there. And with everyones fate in doubt, beyond the original characters at least, still sounds like a good idea to me. Hopefully it will be somewhat of a mix between old and new characters.

Obviously you can't disregard the events depicted in the films and still keep yourself in the same Universe with them. They have to be acknowledged somehow to keep some kind of contiguous feel to it all. Vader seems like the most obvious to be capitalized on, initially anyway, considering his almost iconic pop-culture status. C-3P0 and Chewie, maybe not so much. Vader has supposedly spent the time between Episodes III and IV punching the galaxy in the face until it submits to his masters evil will. That could be great on TV.

Or not, whatever they end up doing I'm still geeked for this one. More so than the CGI-Wars. Allthough that still looks great too, don't get me wrong.

I actually like the idea of some characters being revisited. Maybe for only an episode or two, just to add some flavor to the Star Wars that most of the public recognizes, but also for story line. Could be good, could be bad, but I'm for it.

I would love to see Vader in "action". We've never really seen The Vader suit in alot of battle. ANH was old with an old man. ROTJ was better with Luke, but I'd like to see "Darth Vader helped the Emperor hunt down and kill the Jedi knights".

See the Vader suit lead the 501st into battle again against rebels or a band of Jedi knights would be totally sweet!

I too hope to see Vader kick someones ass. I don't know if that will make a great series by itself, but it seem obvious to include at some point. I think it might almost be cooler if they just show him in passing, like "Heh there goes Lord Vader on another murderous rampage again oh noes, Look out!" If he isn't a main character, he still would be important to have around.

He'd have to - i mean, getting someone else other than JEJ would be kinda pointless.

Kinda my point....2 years until it even starts, and @ 100 episodes, that's 5 seasons, roughly. Can he hang on for 7 more years?

If not, I'm sure the sound editing department can slap something together using old lines.

I think that the line "There will be no one to stop us this time" will have some influence on the live TV series. Perhaps we will find out exactly what Vader is talking about.

What "role" exactly could Hayden revisit? Well, we've got voice, as filled by JEJ, and then random tall guy in a suit, which could be filled by someone taller and less expensive than Christensen. Are we going to be treated to Vader-flashbacks-of-Anakin's-misadventures?

I don't recall what movie site reported it but as I remember reading it was something along the lines of "Hayden expressed interested in guest appearances as Vader".

It was a uncredited James Earl Jones voice-over and a very weak one at that in my opinion. Lucas, may have been trying to pay homage to Luke's "Nooo" from Empire's "I am your father" scene.

We could see shots of vader without his helmet, as various henchmen report their successes or failures.

Let's not revisit that whole "Sith Lord whining like a ninny" moment...I still can't watch that part.

Or we could see battle damaged Vader with his helmet cracked open. Wasn't there a figure from the video-game shown off somewhere a while back that looked kind of like that?

Who knows how many times Vaders been rebuilt over the years.

The force unleashed is going to have a figure like that...or maybe it's the purge comic vader.

I thought we knew that he had lost several more parts of his humanity...like the rest of his legs and all.

Actually, I saw a neat article one time that pointed out where exactly Anakin was wounded over the course of Episodes II and III and compared it to stills of Vader being electrocuted in ROTJ (where his skeleton was visible), and showed that (amazingly enough) the bionic parts in Jedi match up fairly exactly to each of Ani's wounds in the earlier movies. Not that I hold a lot of stock in that continuity being a sacred cow (especially since it's somewhat of a fluke), but at the moment it would seem that the only major injuries he took were those from the movies. Besides that, what else does he really have to get injured?

When I said rebuilt, I was basically talking about the mechanical parts. He could take a hell of a lot of damage to the cybernetic bits and still survive.

I see Vader Flashbacks from his chamber. You could bookend the shows with him reflecting on events.

Man, I'd love it if they'd do it like a sequel (or adaptation of) to the Dark Lord novel, that would be awesome. I just love the very idea of a group of Jedi being on the run from the Empire, with Vader chasing them across the galaxy. Would make a good series IMO.

We all know that lucas is bounty hunter happy. Any time he can throw someone with some tech and armor and try to make him sound badass, he's all over it.
