Yes, it sucks that Will Smith is going to play Neville in this but the plot has great potential.

It's basically about a virus that takes over everyone and turns them into something like a vampire. Everyone except Neville. He then goes about during the day time killing all these people who've been infected.

Eventually, Neville discovers that while he is the only person immune to the bacterium, he is not the only one still alive. Others who have been infected have discovered a means to hold the disease at bay. However, during the daylight hours, they appear to be fully involved vampires.

Thus, along with the vampires, he has been killing these still alive persons. He becomes a source of terror to the still living, since he can go abroad in daylight (which they can't) and leaves their dead behind.

These still living “vampires” capture Neville and reveal their nature to him, and how monstrous he appears to them. Just as vampires were regarded as a legendary monster that preyed on the vulnerable humans in their beds, Neville has become the last of a dead breed; a mythical figure that kills both vampires and the infected living while they are sleeping. He becomes a legend as the vampires once were, hence the title.

Johnny Depp has been attached to this as well. Due in Nov 2007

Now that sounds like a good movie. I like the premise, but yea Will Smith? Who knows.

They will be filming this Saturday, in my neighborhood, (the23rd) on 5th ave in Manhattan between 23 and 31st street.

BUT here's the interesting part:

According to the flyers taped around the block, "Will Smith plays Robert Neville, an Army doctor who stays behind on the island on Manhattan, after a plague forces the evacuation of the island. He is immune, and has stayed behind to find a cure..."

So an Army doctor goes ape shit and starts killing everyone infected with this vampire plague??

According to that link Bear posted, the talkbacks are claiming that Depp is no longer attached. Which is a relief because I don't want to see Depp staring with Will Smith.

script review
Quote:
ROBERT NEVILLE (Will Smith) is the last man on earth. He hunts down deers off Park Avenue in New-York City. During the day, he finds food and equipments to continue his existence. Before sundown, he goes back to his bunker residence awaiting daytime again. A former army virus-expert, he's trying to discover a cure for the virus that has mutated 90% of the population. Those 'infected' are allergic to sunlight and UV light. They eat whatever they can find. Neville is immuned to the virus and uses his own blood to find a serum. He broadcast a message everyday on the radio to have survivors meet him at the South Street Seaport at noon. We flashback between Robert's memories of how the whole infection began and how he lost his family. Finally, one day he's had enough. He decides at the sundown to take on the whole infected army. (His idea of suicide...) Just as he's about to collapse from the evil onslaught, a young woman called ANNA and a boy ETHAN appear. Is he dreaming? I need to say I've never read the legendary script that Mark Protosevich wrote or Matheson's novel. With that in mind, I'm not able to tell you how faithful the adaptation is. But I'll say this, it's a fascinating story. I like the script from beginning to end. Goldsman, who's usually either great or totally off, has managed to write a very strong storyline. It reminded me of the first half of 28 Days Later.

More pics are up on AICN from the shoot.
Will Smith now has a Mustang Cobra to fight da Vampires in. :whatevaho: oh, and a sidekick dog.

It looks like a trailer for a random zombie flick. Nothing to get excited about.

yeah, I saw the trailer on ET the other night. Looks mediocre to say the least. Like an American 28 days later. They're playing this all wrong too, Will is once again the cool, hip muscular rich dude that comes to save the day in his flashy car and sharp clothes. They should have played it like he was just another ordinary dude, joe average who just so happens to be imune to this disease. He then slowly figures it all out that he's the last person "alive" and grows into this persona of being a "LEGEND" to those infected. That I could dig.

This is just more of Smith like ID4, just replace aliens with vampire zombies.

If you were the last man on earth, you wouldn't pick the best looking car you could find to drive around? You'd pick the station wagon?

realistically, when the shit is just going down, I'd still be driving whatever it was I had at the time. I'd be trying to find out what was going on, I'd look for someone else still alive, I'd go stock up on supplies, probably steal a few guns and get as much info as I could about what just went down. I WOULDN'T be doing chin ups I know that! They really should go the more psychological route with this thing. Ground it in reality. What would the normal person do in the case of something like a chemical attack or a neutron bomb going off or whatever and you're the only one to make it out alive? How would the mind cope? Play it off something like "Cast Away" with Tom Hanks. You'd probably grow your hair out, your mental state would deteriorate, start talking to yourself...really freaking out for awhile. Make it believeable dammit! You wouldn't be acting like a badass, king of the world. But then, maybe a few weeks go by, and you start noticing the people come back to life as VAMPIRES! Everyone but YOU! They try to attack you but during the day they go into hiding and are weak. So you start killing them during the daytime and you SLOWLY become this LEGEND to them. YOU'RE the monster. The freak that kills people during the day while they're sleeping. You're freaking THEM out now. End it shockingly somehow, maybe suicide, I don't know.

THAT would be a kickass movie. Instead we'll be watching "AW HELL NO's". He's even using his real life daughter in this man!

Did you not hear the part about 1001 days later?? You might do those things, but that wouldn't make for a good movie. But I do hope there aren't any Aw Hell Nos in here.

I've always been a big fan of 'empty world' scenery and decimation fantasy films. I have been formultaing an 'end of the world' contingency plan for years. But you're correct, the practical application of it probably wouldn't make a good movie. Nobody is going to want to watch me raiding Home Depots, and looking for :weed: in the pockets of corpses. And crying like a bitch about the whole 'never getting laid again' thing. Allthough I'm willing to write/star in it if anyone wants to make that movie. Still, I'm interested to check this one out.

But that trailer was pretty boring. I'm surprised they released such a 'less than intriguing' promo for something that probably cost quite a bit to make.

As far as the car is concerned, I'd be driving one of these around everywhere:

With one or two of these in the back, just in case you gotta gtfo a' dodge.

But that's just me.

new trailer up:
I am legend

you get flashes of the vampires. they're all gray and hairless, large jaws, not human looking at all. skinny. doesn't look to be very psychological thriller type at all. at least we get the Dark Knight trailer in front of it though!!

Better resolution: I Am Legend 480

Yeah, I'm a little upset about the vampires. There was nothing wrong with the vampires from the novel. The great thing about it was that they were intelligent. They didn't just run after Neville, they tried to coax him out. Plus, some would actually speak, not just growl. Definitely could have stuck closer to the book on that point.

After hearing what you two are saying about the vamps, I'm going to hold off reading the book till after the movie. I thought the trailer looked great. The effects could be touched up some, but looks great none the less.

I'm a fan of The Omega Man, so I look forward to this. But Will Smith is no Charlton Heston.

allright, i watched it online tonight. it's average at best. here's the spoiler:

[spoil]it's also 80% a one man movie. you've REALLY got to like Will Smith to enjoy this movie because it's basically just him talking to his dog for most of the movie as he searches for survivors and a cure to the virus. Also, he becomes a different type of "legend" in this film. The vampires aren't scared in the least bit of him. He doesn't go around killing them during the daytime either, he only kills in self defence. He only becomes a legend because he finds the cure in the end and blows himself up to protect it when he gives it to another "survivor". So it doesn't follow the book, it's a one man show, he's a scientist that talks to his dog looking for the cure and he's a legend for a different reason. oh, and the vampires look like shit and can hang on the ceiling and jump a story high. Not very realistic. They should have named it something else. 6 out of 10[/spoil]
