The coming of Galactus and Silver Surfer.

imdb.com: Fantastic Four II

[hr]
Source: Variety May 4, 2006

Variety reports that Marvel's Silver Surfer is on course to become a linchpin in Fantastic Four 2, which 20th Century Fox is readying for a July 4, 2007 release.

The character has evolved into one of Marvel's more sophisticated comic book heroes. A Surfer feature has been in Fox's arsenal for a decade, but the studio waited because the project is so ambitiously f/x-heavy and Fox has been busy with other Marvel franchises.

The wait ends with "FF2." The storyline is being finalized, with the studio about to choose between a script by X2: X-Men United scribe Mark Frost and another by Don Payne, who scripted Fox/New Regency's My Super-Ex Girlfriend.

According to the trade, Payne's script is the frontrunner and includes the Surfer.

Now see, there is a time when you should know your limits, and that's clearly proof they don't.

FF wasn't such a bad movie and the effects were okay, but honestly, sequel... I don't know.. Galactus, I'm definitelly certain I don't want to see them uncapture the esssence of the big guy.

And who will play Silver Surfer... Josh Hartnett? Sean William Scott? ooohh oooh I know Ryan Reynolds.

I suggest they get the guy that played the T-1000 in T2 to reprise his silvery facade. I thought the first F4 film was decent, I think a sequel will be pretty good actually. As long as they use half as much fabric on Jessica Alba's costume as they did in the first one anyways.

Agree also with DP on Ultimate Galactus. I think any attempt to recreate 616 Galactus' appearance will kill all future comic-book films with the non comics audience.

If true, my preference would be Ultimate Galactus and Marvel Universe "616" Silver Surfer.

Fantastic Four II: Fantastic Four and The Silver Surfer
Due: June 2007

One rumour that has been making its way around the Internet in recent weeks is this one about Vin Diesel possibly playing The Silver Surfer in “The Fantastic Four 2”. I’m sure you’ve all heard it. And the rumour mill went [further] into overdrive last week, when it was announced that Diesel had left his new film “Black Water Transit” – for undisclosed reasons.

That rumour? Not true. It is on the fast track to the recycle bin. Wham. Bam. Boom. No xXx fighting alongside the troops in blue, I’m sorry to say. Whatever reason Diesel left “Transit”, has nothing to do with “FF2”.

The film’s director, Tim Story, told me this morning that although The Silver Surfer is indeed in the movie, it won’t be Vin Diesel playing him.

“No truth to it”, Story said, when asked about the Diesel rumours. “The Surfer will be a new CGI design being developed especially for the movie. It's going to be incredible”.

The Silver Surfer is a galaxy-cruising defender endowed with superhuman strength, who is able to control and direct cosmic energies, with enough force to destroy a city.

Initially, he was going to front his own picture (and probably will, sometime in the future), but the studio have decided to team him up with “The Fantastic Four” for his first movie out of the gate.

Am I the only person who believes that this will not translate well on screen? I mean superhero films are not suppose to be taken as factual anyway, but bringing in a cosmic entity to earth to either work/fight the F4 is sort of beyond believable isn't it? Superman works because EVERYONE knows his back story all too well. He is from Krypton. People grow up knowing that shit. But I'm guessing unless you have read Marvel comics at some point in your life, you do not know of SS. And I believe that a guy flying in from outer space on a surf board is going to make some people laugh at this movie.

Superhero films need regular movie goers as well. Especially with the shittiness of the first F4.

Anyway, if they do CGI, make it like the T-1000 from Terminator. Not like Colossus from X3.

It's definitely a risk, no doubts there.

The first one was pretty terrible IMO. Thery're going to need to pull out all the stops with this one. But if you're FOX, do you throw a huge budget at this thing? Personally, I wouldn't.

Anyway, Superherohype is reporting that there is a new title for the movie.

It's FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER

They also got hold of what looks like/may be a press release from FOX.

"In the sequel, the enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As the Silver Surfer races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben must unravel the mystery of The Silver Surfer and confront the surprising return of their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom, before all hope is lost."

Fat Harry has chimed in with his two cents commenting that it looks like a combo story from FF 48-50 and FF 57-60.

You can read his take here should you wish.

Ah the old Marvel Series character cards. Boy that takes me back. I probably have that card stashed away in a closet somewhere. My favorite was the X-Men series 1 cards completely drawn by Jim Lee. Nobody was better at penciling X-Men than Jim Lee.

I wouldn't get my hopes up on seeing Galactus on screen anytime soon. They'll blow all their wad on the surfer blowing up buildings and monuments and then he'll turn good just in time to team up with the 4 to defeat uber-doom. this movie will be toilet bowl gremlins. :meatwad:

AICN Surfer Story

Hello Moriarty,

"Man in Suit" note here.

I have a confirmation from a colleague from Spectral Motion FX that the Silver Surfer, played by Doug Jones, is NOT going to be a computer generated or motion capture based character like Davy Jones from Pirates 2. The character is being created using a body-suit that is sprayed in a chrome-ish, silver paint scheme. It also appears that the face of the surfer is a fixed, contemplative expression in the head piece appliance with limited mouth movement that will be articulated by Jones' performance in the suit. Additionally, there have been numerous challenges related to placing him within a green screen environment.

Is it me or does it seem odd that an effect that was perfected in 1990/91 with Terminator 2's "T-1000" is being passed over in favor of using a sophisticated Power Rangers suit? Why this is not Motion capture or a 3D based character work is beyond me. Economics? Performance? After John Knoll's landmark mo-cap work on Pirates, should there be any other contemporary effect choice/tool for this 2 year window of FX production? Very odd choice, seems risky in the land of fickle fan boy culture. We'll see how it plays.

Tom Rothman (aka The asshole) has chimed in with talk of Galactus and Silver Surfer over at IESB.

Tom Rothman interview

[spoil]
[align=left]
IESB: We gotta come up to Fantastic Four 2.

TR: Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer.

IESB: Yes, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, Weta is doing the CGI, Doug Jones doing the motion capture, we want to confirm this, you can’t have the Silver Surfer without Galactus making an appearance at one point or another in the film right?

TR: That’s true.

IESB: Avi has always referred to Galactus as a force of nature.

TR: Yeah.

IESB: Is he going to look like anything like we’ve seen him in the comic books?

TR: Yes, I think that Galactus, look, I don’t want to give away too much, right, but I will say this, Galactus will appear and fans will not be disappointed.

IESB: Do we have multiple villains here? Tim has said we are going to see Doom come back in full Doom gear but Alicia Masters is the daughter of the Puppet Master.

TR: I am very aware of that.

IESB: So, are we going to see any Puppet Master action here?

TR: (laughing) I will neither confirm nor deny, I will not confirm or deny, you got Galactus and Silver Surfer out of me and I am not going to confirm or deny.

IESB: Ok, we’ll try to get that out of you at a later date.

TR: That is correct.

IESB: Obviously we know the story line, we know he’s the herald and we know that he eventually comes over to the hero side, are we hoping to see a spin off of the Silver Surfer?

TR: Well, I don’t want to be exuberant, but I will say this, we are investing a tremendous amount of money, time and care, to make the state of the art CGI Silver Surfer, to make him as great as modern technology can make him. And, the only thing that I would say is that the real, the ultimate pay off of that level of investment and doing it to its fullest possible extent, would really come if we are able to make future films. Like any movie, you have to make a really good first one before you should, let’s put it that way, make another one. So, we need to make this movie great and we need to make the Silver Surfer’s debut incredibly dazzling and compelling. But, we’re certainly putting everything that the business has to offer behind it in the hopes of doing that, in the hopes that the Silver Surfer has a long life.

IESB: And traditional look as well? We will see him with a surfboard?

TR: Yes, traditional look, very, very faithful look but it’s, obviously, it’s taking the comic look and giving it a 3D rendering. We have not yet determined what the voice casting will be. We’ve done a lot of work lately with Weta, as I said I saw some absolutely breathtaking shots of Saphira the dragon from Eragon, and even the test work they have done on the Surfer is incredibly cool. I honestly think it’s gonna blow people away but people will be able to judge pretty soon for themselves because I will tell you that the first teaser that we are going to put out of the movie, which will be very early in the new year, the first teaser will definitely reveal the Silver Surfer. So people won’t have long to wait to judge how well it is done.

IESB: So we will see the Silver Surfer the first couple of months of the new year.

TR: Yes, I can’t say exactly and I can’t imagine there would be a whole lot of it right, but, there will be shots of the reveal that will be in the first teaser.

I honestly think it looks pretty good. Sadly this might be another movie that I'll be catching on DVD. However I might try to convince my dad to see if he wants to go see it in theaters. I never was able to catch the first one since I didn't really know about it but the second one I'd love to see in theaters.

Yeah, but you can't tell me it doesn't already look better than Colossus did in X3. I don't understand why they fucked up the look after he looked great in X2.

Oh and that trailer looks better than anything that was in the first movie.

I'll go see it, but I won't be expecting to be floored by how great it is. I hope that bit in the trailer isn't the only exciting moment in the film.

It is at least a nice compliment considering they have a good amount of time to do even better on the effects. This is a teaser trailer. Most teaser trailers effects aren't complete. Look at anything coming out of Spider-Man 3 right now.

We're kind of veering more and more away from Fantastic Four 2, but the FX in the Spider-Man movies have been mediocre to poor from the get-go. I'm not expecting much in that regard from the third one.

Yeah it's a teaser trailer, with intention of wowing us with the appearance of the Silver Surfer (which is cool and all) and a chase scene. This practically was the teaser. I'm not saying that this is the best they'll have to offer us next June, just that the Silver Surfer looks like shit. This is okay. More things make up a film than CGI (most of the time).

Fantastic Four was a terrible film.

After watching it today, I could care less about what this movie does.

How they handed over Marvel's pride to the bozos that made that film is unbelieveable. On every level it's terrible.

Yeah for me the FX were horrible. I understand there were some problems with the company they first used, so they subbed out the work with the deadline only weeks or so away. Needless to say the second company either didn't have enough time, or sucked just as bad as the first. I think FF2 will have much better FX as shown by the trailer IMO, but who knows. Still don't know if I'll see it or not in the theaters though. I'll probably wait for the first week or two and see what people and friends are saying about it.

Speaking of trailers new TV spot as well as a poster:

Maybe the FX were unimpressive, but they still were easier to get along with than the CG Spiderman

The movie was trashy and had a very lame finale, but I find it strange, that among so many mediocre adaptations this one should be considered as particularly bad. I can understand dissapointment from people, who care a lot about FF and are aware, how much some of the characters and concepts were misrepresented. But come on, storywise X-men and Spider-Man movies weren't that much smarter and closer to it's sources than this one. And the abysmal, pretentious stories of Superman Returns and V for Vendetta make me wish the studios made two more FF-like shallow entertainment movies instead.

I guess I'm among the small minority here who's enjoyed both Spider-Man films and enjoyed Fantastic Four.

By the way I saw the new trailer on TV last night, loved it. I loved the part too where Silver was choking Johnny and Johnny asked gruntly if they could talk.

I've actually loved both Spider-man movies. FF wasn't horribly bad, but the FX for me sucked. The FX in Spider-man were believable for me, more of a comic book feel. Most of the effects in FF were far from that, just seemed really cheap to me. But with that said, did I think it was a bad movie? No.

For the special effects of the Spider-Man films, they made it look comic like on purpose. Sam Raimi has said that in interviews before. As far as the special effects in Fantastic Four I thought they were good, but that's just me.

haha. This is funny shit.

"Looks like a storms comin'."

Well, if I was going to see it before, I'm definitely not going to see it now. For anyone who complains about the way Green Goblin or Venom look on the big screen, at least they aren't a storm cloud.

More details would be good. If it looks like a storm cloud from far off, but is made up of individual 'units', similar to Ultimate Gah-Lak-Tus, it might not be completely horrible. But if it's just a big sparkly gas cloud with lightning etc, that will be a real letdown. In fact, either way, it's still a real letdown. Not making him a big fucking giant traveling space destroying shit proves the filmakers don't understand the appeal of these stories. If this is the kind of effort they are going to put into making them, maybe they just shouldn't. edit:*But then again, how would 'mainstream' audiences respond to a big guy clad in purple wearing some funky headgear just showing up at the end? A redesign was inevitable, but a glistening space-fart would be just as ridiculous.*

I hope the series of Marvel Studios produced films end up less altered/butchered than these big studio clusterfucks.

Didn't you just say something about not letting other people's opinions affect you?

This movie does look like excrement. I just saw the first one this past weekend, and I have to say I'm really getting put off by comic book movies. Granted 300 was awesome, Batman Begins was enjoyable, but with the exception of Jessica Alba running around, this one looks like it has nothing to offer.

For me, the first movie was just bland. No real substance, no real story. It didn't move me at all, I didn't care for the characters or the situation they were put in. It wasn't Batman Begins or X2 good, but it wasn't Batman and Robin or Elektra bad.

Maybe someone would know better than I do about this, but has Redd ever actually cured Ben? I read all of their comics and have for a little while, but I don't remember this ever happening. Also if the problem in helping turn Ben back was the amount of power they had, I understand how doom was able to supply the rest of the power. However, once doom left and Ben realized he needed to be the thing again to save Reed where did he get enough power to operate the machine again? I didn't really like the idea of transforming him, it has always been a conflict his character had.

In the first movie Doom was able to generate enough power for Reed's machine that replicated the storm and turned Ben back to his old self. However Ben's selfishness got the better of himself and once he realized what he had done he turned himself back into The Thing. At the end of the movie Reed said with enough time he could turn Ben back into himself but Ben told him he was good as The Thing. He had gotten used to it by the end of the movie.

The machine continued to generate the cloud even with out Doom's power. All Ben had to do was activate the machine step in it and vola, he's The Thing again since he was once more exposed to the cloud.
