[spoil]Comic book hero Captain America is dead

[align=left]Shocking event for Captain America
POSTED: 2:43 p.m. EST, March 7, 2007

From Larry Holmes, Jonathan O'Beirne
and Glenn Perreira
CNN

Editor's Note: The following story reveals information about the Marvel Comics' "Civil War" storyline and a key character. If you'd rather not know, stop reading now.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- He fought and triumphed over Hitler, Tojo, international Communism and a host of supervillains, but he could not dodge a sniper's bullet.

Comic book hero Captain America is dead.

After close to 60 years in print, Marvel Comics has killed off Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, one of its most famous and beloved superheroes amid an already controversial story line, "Civil War," which is pitting the heroes of Marvel's universe against one another.

In the comic series, Rogers was to stand trial for defying a superhero registration law passed after a hero's tragic mistake causes a 9/11-like event.

Steve Rogers eventually surrenders to police. He is later mortally wounded as he climbs the courthouse steps. (Watch the story of an American hero )

Marvel says the comic story line was intentionally written as an allegory to current real-life issues like the Patriot Act, the War on Terror and the September 11 attacks.

"Every child knew about 9/11," says Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics. "If [he] could see a TV he knew what 9/11 was. The other similarities [to] things going on are just part of storytelling."

It was a violent and strange end for an American hero.

Captain America first appeared in 1941, just as the United States entered World War II. He was a symbol of American strength and resolve in fighting the Axis powers, and later Communism.

As originally conceived by creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Rogers was a man born before the Great Depression in a very different America. He disappeared after the war and reappeared only recently in the Marvel timeline. For a superhero many thought perfect, it was perhaps a fatal flaw for "Cap," as he became known.

"He hasn't been living in the modern world and the world does move," says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada.

Quesada said he wanted to readers find their own meaning in Cap's end.

"There is a lot to be read in there. But I'm not one who is going to tell people, this is what you should read into it, because I could look into it and read several different types of messages," he told CNN.

The character's death came as a blow to co-creator Simon, the Associated Press reported.

"We really need him now," Simon, 93, told The AP.

Still, one has to wonder: Is Captain America really dead? Comic book characters have routinely died, only to be resurrected when necessary to storylines.

Joe Quesada agrees -- but said times are different now.

"There was period in comics where characters would just die and then be resurrected. And the death had very little meaning and the resurrection had very little meaning," he said. "All I ask of my writers is if you're going to kill a character off, please let that death have some meaning in the overall scope of things."

Besides, he said, there are other important questions left unanswered.

"What happens with the costume? And what happens to the characters that are friends and enemies of Cap?" Quesada said with a smile. "You're going to have to read the books to find out."[/align]

Is this in an upcoming storyline? It must be a very slow news day at CNN...

Captain America #25 comes out today and for some reason the variant cover was "released" before the issue.

:siren: UPDATE: Captain America Volume 5 #25 is up.

I was kind of pissed that I read about it first on CNN.

[spoil] I would have prefered to read it in the comic first. Allthough, in fairness, the CNN article didn't have a give-away title, and did have a warning in the first paragraph or so. It was my own fault for not listening to them I guess. I did overhear the evening news just blurt it out, however.

I guess I'm not sure what to think about the actual event, though. Kind of saw it coming, but I thought after the end of Civil War maybe I was wrong. I'm curious what they intend to do with this, storywise. The Captain America solo title was pretty popular and I was a fan, so wtf happens to that? Punisher picked up his mask and Iron Man nabbed his shield and his costume is soaked in super-soldier blood plus extra ventilation, so it's not like anyone else is going to be putting on the costume anytime soon. I hope there's a riot at the funeral.

I'll give Marvel credit for one thing, though. They let Brubaker write it instead of lumping it into the poorly written (but great looking!) Civil War main title. I wonder if Cap' collectibles are going to go up in value, hmmmm.......[/spoil]
Umm, yeah, now I'm not sure of anything, considering Ms Marvel/Jessica Drew dialogue in Initiative#1, wtf.

Hmm, the way it was handled was actually fairly moving. I don't follow Marvel that closely, but it'll be interesting to see what they do with the series. I'd personally like to go back to the WWII/Nazi-asskicking stuff.

While I didn't get a chance to read the issue yet (due to uploading twenty 0day books to fast non-rapidshare webhosts) the news sorta did get me down also. :o

You think the Punisher will be the next Captain? There was that comment by Peter Parker in Civil War that the Punisher and Captain America were the same man, different war.
More cover(s)age and more carnage :vsuicide: :seppuku:

Now I don't know what to think. Ms Marvel told Spider-Woman Cap was still alive (Initiative#1). Seems like the kind of thing she might say just to draw Jessica over to her side, but maybe not. They were pretty good friends pre-CW, in fact I had imagined them being exxx-tra special really good friends considering they are both drawn perversly well. Rogers sure looked like a corpse at the end of Cap#25, though.

Punisher might attempt to don the mask, but I don't know how well that will go over with anyone in his world or ours. Bucky would be a better fit, I think. At least he feels bad about the bunches of people he's offed over the years. Honestly though, if Steve Rogers is really dead, I'd rather they just not had a New Captain America.

Oh and is that
[spoil]A dead Aunt May on that cover? [/spoil]

Captain America will continue to be published despite the very real death of Steve Rogers. In May, Captain America #26 will reveal the aftermath of his death, beginning with the autopsy of his body. This is no hoax - Captain America, Steve Rogers, is dead.

I guess that answers that. I really fucking hate it, but I can't wait to see what happens now. The marvel.com forums are abounding with messages of "you suck!" which kind of made me giggle that a lot of people joined just to tell them that. A lot of people are bitching on there also that it wasn't a death befitting a hero like Cap, but as social commentary I think it's pretty intriguing.

Planet Hulk is looking like a gigantic ass kicking-festival, considering the level of tension and division amongst the Marvel characters from here on out. At least I hope so, I'm actually kind of sick of watching heros fail. I can get that in the real world.[/align][/spoil]

first read this on the comics discussion thread.

i'm like wtf?

but given that this is the comic book universe, is this gonna be permanent or another sales tactic the way they did with Superman back in the day?

because all this dying-resurrecting stuff is really starting to lose its effectivity....

Well Captain Marvel apparently didn't stay dead (Civil War: The Return) and yes that is Aunt May on that cover. This weeks Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (which was 0dayed btwfyi) also apparently gives away her fate.

Also I went ahead and changed the title since it's out in the open and has been since Wednesday thanks to CNN, Drudge :siren: , and even Colbert.

Those replica shields are dope. I am willing to accept one as a present from Marvel at any time.

I just ordered that variant cover with spidey holding aunt may. I had already bought the original cover, i don't remember it addressing aunt may or not. I have to re read it now.

WW Hulk definitely looks good. He is crazy pissed at the illuminati. But hey he got a piece of ass out of it all so it kind of worked out for him.

via Marvel.com & Newsarama.com

Without preamble, Marvel has posted the following cover on its website with the question: "Is this the new Captain America?"

The cover seems to prove some fans right who noted that Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, was the man who picked up Captain America's mask at the end of Civil War #7. The cover on the right is Punisher War Journal #7, due in may. No further information about the image on the right was given.

Cap isn't dead. Brubaker (obviously) has too much affection for the character to have been the one to kill him.

Go back and re-read the Nick Fury dialogue in Cap #25. It's pretty clear there's some behind-the-scenes shenanigans going on.

In the meantime we'll get six months to a year of Punisher-as-Cap while we are beaten over the head with reasons why Cap never adopted Punisher-style methods.

Apparently the new look for Mr Castle is legit. Found this image in Marvel's June line-up here: newsarama.com

I like the look, if not the idea of it.
