They should have digitally cropped his hair a bit to lessen the obviousness of the change.

The head shot of Hayden looks as if it was taken from one of the webdocs. I don't expect that we'll be getting legit screenshots until closer to the release of the set in September.

did a bit of jiggerypokery and the anakin doesnt seem to stand up too much scrutiny

Image

the glow is wrong, his hair looks modified, his skin tones and detail dont match obi's, the neck line of the jedi robes is not the same as obi's(though i dont have a ROTJ at hand to compare, is it a new body? or just mapped onto shaws body? i guess not!)

tern whats the story on the one you got? same exact shot? did it arrive within the timeline of lowry working on it? from the same source as the emperor pic around the same time? i know u cant answer but im getting carried away!!

Image

the highlights on his head are wrong, his forehead is shinier than his hair, the neckline, the line of sight more than likely a fake but could also be shit fx work! i bet anything that the top guys arent set to work on any restoration projects! no matter how big the project

honestly, how hard was it for you to debunk this, pj?

Didn't take a whole lot of time did it?

You'd think the morons at AICN could take the time to go through the same process and check their work; they didn't even need to know photoshop. Just get a pic of Shaw from the scene in ROTJ and compare. Its obviously Hayden's head on Shaw's body (even down to the wrinkles in the robe).

But, no. Instead they go and post it without any proof. Now all we're going to hear about until the actual pic surfaces is this fake one.

Thanks, AICN. You're swell.

so, they're literally just going to paste Hayden Christensen's head on Shaw's body as it already appears in ROTJ?

Why wouldn't they just insert a shot of his entire body?

As for the pic, the version I have is CRYSTAL clear. The blues match, the colours are even etc.

Very good points, x Sith Happens x. So do the "insiders" believe the high-resolution picture simply because of the quality of the pic or because of who provided it? I'm still very skeptical. Does the "high-resolution" picture show Anakin's face on Shaw's body?

I think it's crap. Someone's been having too much fun with PhotoShop and the Talk-Backers are making something out of nothing. Not until the actual DVD's come out will we know for sure.

Look on the bright side... because of that silly TB, more folks like me are going to show up to MC.com! :whateva:

I know this is going to piss a whole shitload of people off, but that's what the end of ROTJ is going to look like, now.

I don't care about that. I can wait to hear George's comment about it. But other than "gee the secret picture looks great", is there any other reason the picture is accepted as authentic?

well, that sucks.

I don't like the way it looks and I don't understand why he needs to be there (I'm of the belief that Vader became Anakin again when he killed the emperor).

I guess I'll have to wait for the force ghost explanation we've all been promised, but it doesn't make much sense to make this change now and explain why it was changed half a year afterwards.

It's good to hear the picture quality is not the only piece of evidence.

Does the hi-res picture show Anakin's face on Shaw's body?

Do we have a Carl quote about this particular issue?

ROTJ DVD Changes?

Many people have emailed us about the article at AICN regarding the "changes" to the end of Return of the Jedi for the DVDs. While we believe the image is a fake (it is still online and makes no logical sense), we do give credit to the creator for excellent work.

I really don't see what the big deal is over these changes, I mean Lucas is just altering what has already been altered.

And they're minor-freaking-changes at best, from the looks of it.

Nah, this all comes down to Prequel Haters. All the people who are yelling loudest are the folks that like to make "Lucas has lost it" and "Die! JarJar, Die!" comments. Now they're freaking because they can't pretend the "wooden" Prequels aren't a part of Star Wars Proper. Lucas just hammered his new films right into the heart of the old ones and folks can't live in their little world of denial anymore. Because, other than that, this change amounts for about jack or shit.

Whatever. It's funny, the longer this shit goes on, the less I care. I'll just be happy when the whole thing is done and there's no more fucking around with it. Other than that - whatever happens, happens.

These are the archival editions, so lets hope the 2006/7 release will be the old school originals."

Well, looks real-enough for me - I'll reserve my judgement until I see that full shot in 'motion'. It was always going to happen though....

Big "meh" either way.

Question: I wonder if LFL releases these 'pre-pictures' through un-official channels to gauge how well recieved the 'idea' of changing these shots in the original films - I mean, it's not like they can't just go 'fuck it - people hate it...back to the original'

It's a sensible change, I just wish Hayden looked "older" in that shot - I mean, surely he ages in the "Vader-suit"

...oh and, if this turns out to be legit, one can assume the "un-masking" will be hayden as well?

I can't wait to hear the audio commentary from Lucas during that scene.

I'm not against this per se, I just hope he has a better explanation than what Josh is spouting.

I'll laugh my ass off if the commentary during this scene is from Coleman discussing how they changed it rather than from Lucas about why he's changed it.

And now we need the Ian shot from ESB.

Ternian, it is time to put those shots up.

I don't like this, but everyone is saying it is true... everyone that matters anyway...

man, this sucks.

I really hope it's not true. Besides, shouldn't Lucas be too busy with Ep III to be making these changes...

Call me a twat, but Luke in ROTJ won't know what young Anakin looks like. I'm sure he'd figure it out, but it kinda makes the whole scene fucking stupid if you ask me.

Somehow I don't think this boils down to a business decision. I think if Lucas wants it there, it's going to be in there.

If you say so. Personally, I'm going to offer it the generic write off excuse that can explain any Star Wars screw up - "He knew through the Force".

my guess would be the unmasking is still shaw (though where he got his accent from??) then the spirit will be hayden as he is a "jedi spirit" and the last time he was a jedi he was young, anakin "died" during ep3 from then on he was vader/sith so the jedi that we see would be in the form of hayden, though i did like to think that we see shaw because anakin had redeemed himself by killing the emperor! it all comes down to old anakin was sith and young was jedi and as there are no sith spirits(at least not yet, though i dont read the comics etc!) though george"im so rich i dont need no neck"lucas is in charge not us and he can and will do whatever he wants! think of him as michael jackson he lives in his own world surrounded by yes men, can u imagine anyone at ILM or LFL saying no, no, thats a bad idea to his face? personnaly i like him he was nice!

I have no problem with this change, save for the suggestion that's going 'round that Hayden won't be fully comped into the scene, but that his head will be pasted onto Shaw's body. That, I just don't get from an aesthetic standpoint. I mean, a guy's head pasted onto someone else's body is always going to appear odd. And surely that would be more work for the ILM guys, than a complete element replacement. But hey, what do I know?

From a story/thematic standpoint, I think it makes perfect sense. All of Anakin's AOTC angst about "stopping people from dying" is highly suggestive of laying the groundwork for an expression of this in EP3 no? I love that Palps/Sidious will be the one who demonstrates this ability, and that it'll mean a return to slavery for Anakin. It means a division of self for Anakin - a mechanical husk, powered by hatred, with only a seed of the old good self buried within. We're back to the mystical Star Wars, back to the days when the Force was all things to all men. The science of the midichlorians gives way here. It's back to personal interpretation with this. Has us arguing whether Vader really is Anakin or not in a metaphysical sense. To me, that's when Star Wars is at it's best.

We should remember too, that Lucas was banging on about one of the main themes of the Prequels being duality. What describes this more than the Anakin/Vader division. It' the ultimate expression of this theme. I don't get why people have such negative reactions to this, or get caught up in the black & white, yes or no. We're basically spoon fed this stuff growing up. It's not all about sense or easily definable and quantifiable events. We dealing with the body/soul division, and all the father/son/holy ghost stuff. Division of the one. We are able to rationlise this in our daily lives - why all the brouhaha just because we're being asked to deal with it in a movie?

Everything needed to make sense of this is in the OT. The biggie being the description of the Dark Side consuming Anakin, and the result being Vader. The "more machine than man" quote also is a give-away now when we look at it. We can see that Vader is an abberation, and that in a very real sense Anakin did in fact die, and was thought completely gone. It's as though only a small echo of the once-good person survives the death, and it takes the son to awaken it. And there's the new way of looking at the OT we were promised. It's a battle royale between the spirit and this physical manifestation. This is one of the central themes of the entire saga no? Just as the more primitive Gungans & Ewoks gain victory over the more technical mechanised forces of the Federation/Empire, so the spriit of Anakin finally wins out over the mechanised nightmare that is Vader. Repetition of theme. It also is a great reason for Lucas' suggestion that DOTF would be perfect for the Anakin/Kenobi duel in EP3. Remember the translation of the Sanskrit words, as something like "one battle rages in the head, and one in the heart". (far from exact I know). We're seeing Anakin subsumed by all of the desires that come from the head, and not the heart. In the end it's all about what happens when a person makes all of the wrong choices. The figure of Vader is the walking talking and perpetual reminder of this.

It’s the next morning… I had forgotten all about this until I checked for new posts: and questions I’m dying to know the answers just popped into my head…

Why the funk does anyone take this crap so seriously?
Why does anyone take anything Harry Knuckles says seriously?
Does invoking Kevin Smith’s shitting blood really make some people feel better?
Why is Lucas still funking with the OT when he should be working his magic on Jones4?
And most importantly: Why does the grubbiest grocery store in town sell the best coffee?

The Hayden thing is really a non-issue to me. The whole Force ghost thing has never made sense anyway. Why do clothes disappear along with the body but cloaks and lightsabers don't? Anakin as a ghost can regrow hair and limbs, remove his scars and wear robes he never wore during life but he can't appear younger?

Damn whiny sheep. :whatevaho:

I know it's not happening, but to tell the truth that wouldn't bother me at all.

I never liked Yoda until AOTC. Never could shake the feeling that Star Wars had turned into Sesame Street in ESB.

It's nice to see Harry talking out of both sides of his mouth in addition to stuffing food into both sides of his mouth.

I'm sure he will jizz all over his computer when the first Ep. 3 footage comes across. Or when the Dolby Digital sound of the OT on DVD hit his fat-encased ears. Or when he sees The Duel for the first time.

I just thought I should let you all know that a friend of mine, who's obscure relative whom works for the still needs to remain nameless company that LFL contracted to produce the DVD's has given me an actual, physical copy of the Original Trilogy DVD set.

Yes, that's right, I have the actual discs in all of their consumer packaging. While I could very easily prove this to you, I won't. Why, I could lay them on the floor, and take a quick snapshot with my handy digital camera, but I suppose I'm too lazy for that.

Or, perhaps I could quickly scan in the Return of the Jedi DVD cover, maybe an insert or two, but, I won't provide anything like that either.

I will assure you, however, that the DVD DivX quality rips of RotJ that you may have seen online are indeed a work in progress. (I like to use, and am quite fond of the acronym WIP).

These WIP DVD rips do showcase WIP changes to the movie. However, more WIP alterations are being added everyday to this WIP set, most likely up until the WIP DVD's become finalized from their WIP state sometime in late August.

WIP.

I've captured a screenshot of one of the WIP character / actor replacements that George Lucas himself requested be done of the movie over a year ago:

http://homepage.mac.com/etek/.Pictures/christopherwalken.jpg

That's right.

Harrison Ford's sketchy and sometimes outright bad performance of Han Solo is replaced by the much more fitting and original vision of Han Solo by none other than one of the first candidates for the role, Christopher Walken.

Even though it does look a little flat, maybe even 2D, the WIP video looks much smoother, and the WIP head match movements are impressively realistic. For WIP, that is. I can assure you this WIP replacement will look phenomenal, and will not be in its current state of looking like a 4 minute Photoshop job on the final DVD's. WIP.

I hope this post has been educational for you all, and I can't wait to see what else LFL has in store for the DVD releases in September. If I have anymore facts to post, I'll do so immediately!
