This was my fav Harry Potter book in the latter ones. I am anxious to see how it turns out.

Although the last movie was absolutely shit.

I've read OoTP three times now and I'd have to say it's my fav of the series so far. I wonder how long after this they will release HBP because these kids won't be kids anymore...

The films are getting darker and darker, which I like.

I think this was the book everyone liked, and from the stills, it seems to capture it.

So far, I've only seen the above ten seconds, and it looks pretty good. But how old is Harry supposed to be in this one? Because he looks like he's old enough to vote. Not that I care, I just hope they don't verbally refer to the characters ages this time. It might not be as noticeable if they don't mention it like they did in the last one.

looks to be another promising movie , cant wait for it to hit the screens.

although i havent gottent around to reading the books, but i promised myself once Book 7 comes out and they release the box set i'm damn well gonna get it. that would look so great with the rest of my book collections.

So there is some sort of flashback in the film? Your post made me think that they were going to make a prequel to the Harry Potter films called "Young Marauders". Silly me.

Heh, sorry I guess I've been just assuming that anybody reading this thread has read all the books too. But yeah there is somewhat of a flashback scene in the book, it's actually one of Snape's memories from when he was in school that Harry views through the pensieve.

No, I haven't read any of the books. Unfortunately, I've heard spoilers concerning Snape and Dumbledore, but I'm trying to stay as surprised as possible as the future events unfold on screen. I'd rather watch a director's interpretation of a book on screen than actually read the book myself.

I know most people that read books that movies are based on, are ultimately disappointed with the director's interpretation and don't enjoy the movie at all.

So if I don't read the book, I can't be disappointed, and I can enjoy the movie for what it's worth.

I have all the books, and have read them numerous times. That hasn't kept me from liking the movies. Sure they change some things, but as long as the story line stays pretty close to the book I'm good with it. Afterall, it is pretty hard to translate an 800+ page book into a 2 hr 15 minute movie that kids will understand.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but apparently in the IMAX version, the last 20 minutes are suppose to be in full 3D! It also gets a simultanious release too.

I was about a hairs-width away from being dragged to the midnight opening of this one tonight. Once the Mrs realized that she wouldn't be getting home till almost 3AM, she decided maybe later this week would be better. I would have gone, though. I like these movies, I'm just not really emotionally invested in them. Looks to be one of the better in the series, but we'll see.

Got back from Grauman's not too long ago. Close close close behind Prisoner of Azkaban as the best Harry Potter film.

^ yup, I'd agree with that statement...I havn't read any of the books, just watched the films...but yeah, I really enjoyed this one...helped by the fact that the kids seem to be acting this time around, and it shows...which is good...and I'd watch Garry Oldman paint a ceiling....he was brilliant, especially at the end when he turns up...and the Dumbledore wizard battle extreme thing was cool too, thought Harry Should've really ponied up then and helped him out though...

Great flick, first Harry Potter I genuinely enjoyed.

I liked it. Definately one of the best of the series, and my personal fave so far. Seems to really keep it's pace the whole way through. No really uncomfortable eye-roll moments in this one for me either, a first for the Potter flicks.

The acting and the action both took big steps forward this time. The effects were great, and the movie as a whole seemed more properly put together than any of the other films. Thats not to trash the others in the series, it's just this time I didn't feel like I just walked out of a kids movie. And I finally stopped hating the new Dumbledore.

I'll be the black sheep. I thought it was an alright movie in and of itself, but I couldn't stand the actress who played Umbridge. She was kind've over the top. I also (and know this is in light of being a reader of the series) thought they screwed up some of the characterization; e.g. making Cho out to be a bad guy, having Dumbledore yell at the students. To be fair, they did a lot considering the source material; that book was definitely exposition-heavy. I guess I've got a hard time shaking the influence of the read.

Also, they tweaked me by leaving out one of (I think) the best pieces of exposition in the book: Harry's aunt, who's sister was Harry's mum and a witch, is in a beginning chapter shown for the first time to have some level of awareness of Harry's world. When Harry comes back and tells his Aunt & Unc about the attack, and the fact that V's back, she reacts with fear and helps explain the situation to Uncle. Obviously this isn't necessary to the story at all, and I've got no real problem with it being left out - but it would have been all of a 2-minute scene that would have given some depth to his otherwise one-evil-stepmother-dimensional aunt.

Yeah, I also hoped there'd be more with Petunia like in the book.

I've read the books, but in no way am I dissapointed with what was cut or not. So many of the same lines and situations are straight from the book. Apples and oranges of course. All the novels are really bloated.

Umbridge IS over the top. Her character in the book is just pure bitch. Even when I read it I thought it was a little out of place to have such an over the top comical evil woman in the mix with great characters.

In the book she was definitely evil, but not just for the sake of being malevolent. She did see anything as a means to the end of "doing her job," which included going out of the way to make Harry's life like hell, but the tripe in the movie about her turning Hogwarts into a gulag and enforcing Victorian-era standards were kind've out of place. The whole "ha ha look how many rules she put up the janitor can't even reach the top" bit was pretty ridiculous.

I liked it a lot. Up until now, Chamber Of Secrets has been my bag. That was my favorite one, but this was pretty stiff competition. I'm not sure if I like it more, but it was definitely much better than Goblet. Best movie I've seen so far this year.

I understand your point, but I thought of it as being a shorthand way to visually convey how much control she was taking over Hogwarts. The only other alternative would be some kinda boring and clunky expository dialog. You are right, though, about how goofy it looked like. They should've played it more seriously (the teetering ladder, etc).

OOTP wasn't as big a trainwreck as POA and GOF (which I loathed) so I'm somewhat happy with it.

I couldn't stand Chris Columbus' first two films. They lacked any sort of style or imaginiation.

It's as if Columbus simply did it for the paycheck--and he recieved a shitload of money.

Cuaron's Azkaban was the perfect adaptation visually and stylistically, although Kloves' screenplay missed some important information to the story.
Goblet of Fire was an acceptable adaptation I think. It shows the kids being kids which can become hard to do with complicated plots. The past three films have been a great improvement from the first two.

I can't really praise Columbus' directorial, um, style but at least the basic plots were translated faithfully (more or less) from the books.

POA was way too dark. I'm sorry but nothing all that bad really happens in the book. It's not a cutesy happy ending, but it's not as gloomy as the tone of the film had been up to then. That tone would've fit OOTP perfectly though. Don't even get me started on the plot points that got dropped.

GOF was just a piece of shit from start to finish. It was an abortion, there's really no other way to say it. It had no redeeming value whatsoever.

The movies suck overall, but the first two and OOTP suck substantially less than POA and GOF.

I think that Goblet of Fire was pretty faithful in adaptation and style. I didn't have any problems with it.

These movies seem to be the only blockbuster sequels that look like they were actually touched by human hands.

It looked like the editor was on speed when he was in the editing room. There were some really harsh changes in scenes, with the expectation that you pick up on all the issues from the sudden mood changes of characters. I hadn't read the books at that point in time and had no idea about why things were going on at times. It felt at times like there were scenes missing from the version I was watching.

I still think the end of OOTP was decent enough to make it my fave of the HP series so far. Grown-up magic is a far more spectacular than all the 'kiddie' stuff we've seen before. And as someone who only keeps up with the series from the films, I like that it's not so 'cute' from here on out.

I saw this today in IMAX, and the last 20 minutes or so were in 3D. It's not perfect yet, but it did look great. I can't wait to see how the technology progresses in a few more years when Star Wars gets released in 3D

So they gave you 3D glases and said, "Here, put these on at the end of the movie." ?

A logo flashed on the screen when it was time to put them on and take them off.

Some bits were great, like the long hallways and the shattering glass. But sometimes the picture seemed to be more 2.5-dimensional, like flat elements arranged in 3D space. This was more apparent with simple shots of characters walking; the characters and background would seem flat, just separated from one another.

However, the wizard duel was mind-blowing in its complexity and bad-assery.
