I don't feel bad for him, but I do think this so-called "prank" missed the mark. It's not really that funny. Not Daily Show funny, or even Jackass funny, if that's what they were going for. Whatever they wanted to achieve, it was poorly executed.

I'm not the biggest Cruise fan, but after all the roles that he's done & trained for like the samurai movie. He could seriously fuck someone up. No, not going. Every bit of information about the making of the thing suggests that it was thrown together very quickly. They won't let critics publish reviews ahead of the wide release, or else they're preventing them from even seeing it till then. The producer-star has gone way overboard in what would seem like a desperate attempt to hype it -- except that he seems far more interested in talking about his fake girlfriend than the movie. All these things add up to teh suck.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure it will be around long enough for me to change my mind.

We will anyway. Tom Cruise doesn't know the meaning of doing things quietly. If this movie were to bomb, he'd likely become a bigger asshole than ever before. Nothing incites desperate measures like the appearance of failure.

I just fed the fire the other day by checking out some scientology sites to get an iea of what it was all about. I found out that the only reason he is really pushing it now more than ever, which isn't to say he didn't before, is because his sister replaced his old publicist and she, if I remember correctly, is also a scientologist.

His old publicist knew it would get too extreme, and wouldn't let him talk about his religion and relationships. His sister gave him the green light. Boy, wrong move.

That's where I went. When Cruise went nuts on the Today Show about Brooke Shields, what he was saying about psychiatry/ridelin/pills not really curing anyone, but rather masking the problem, made sense to me. With an open mind I was curious just how scientology would do that.

Then I hit up that site, and oh man. I don't care if the stuff they teach cures bearvomit's mental problems, if you believe in Xenu and all that unbelievable shit, then I can never take anything you say seriously again.

Here's a theory:

Tom Cruise is playing the main character of War of the Worlds in real life.

He is intentionally rallying the forces of the media around his suddenly obnoxious, know-it-all, narcissistic persona because he knows, as does Spielberg and the creative team behind War of the Worlds, that people are heavily influenced by what they see on television.

Here's the deal. On June 29th, War of the World hits and those same people that watch the infotainment news shows and wrap their minds around this Tom Cruise deal will head to the theaters to see the film. The immature, child-like Cruise (reviews have already described his character) that has been built up on television will play identically to the main character in War of the Worlds. In this way, the audience's familiarity with this actor is linked to his character in the movie, giving the film a greater strength and self-awareness that makes it a much more interesting experience.

Heh. That would be a good move.

EDIT: It helped a little. The most interesting usage of an actor's actual personality came with the Ogilvy character. The loud rant he lets loose represents the over-zealous lefty against the million-year-old right-wing conspiracy. (see cod doc)

I agree with what some have said about Katie Holmes being given all the interviews about Batman Begins when she's just a small supporting character. I mean, come on, where were the interviews with Christian Bale? I guess he's not important, because he ONLY played Batman....
