As an avid follower of all things politic, the political aspect of Star Wars has made only a tiny bit of a blip in the news, and that was almost a week ago (which is an eon in the age of the 24-hour news cycle). People here seem to think that Lucas' message, whether meant to reflect current events, past events, political philosophy, etc. is some sort of grand revelation that will totally reframe the way we look at government, its actions, and its role in our lives.

I love Star Wars as much as the next guy, but I don't think Bush is sitting in the Oval Office, chewing on his fingernails, whining to Rove and Cheney: "That flanneled, grey bearded bastard exposed my plan! This changes EVERYTHING!"

Probably not, but at least it's getting people to open their eyes and mouths and think about what's going on in the world. Lucas may not have started a revolution with ROTS, but he's at least tried to inject a little subversive political dissension into the culture of a country that seems to pride itself on conformity.

It's just too bad that the only way we can get any edgy political drama from movies anymore have to come from starwars and the like.

I did not realize that the world was asleep. I hear and see people protesting/questioning/chastising Bush, his policies, American "arrogance," Western culture, etc. on the TV every night on every national news broadcast.

Anyway, if war, taxes, economics, judicial activism, growing government, and pork barrel spending are not enough to make someone to pay attention to the world around them, and suddenly a science fiction movie, awesome though it may be, with only a glint of political applicability does get them to wake up, I am not so sure their priorities are in order.

Our president says he doesn't read the newspaper, yet his wife admits they watch Desperate Housewives every Sunday. Now you tell me who needs to get their priorities in order.

I'm a conservative. I used to like Bush but gave up on him for many reasons.
