I can understand it not being in someone's taste, but Carter and the gang consistently put out film quality material on TV

As a viewer, I cant argue that. I didn't like every episode, but the even ones I didn't completely enjoy were done well. Except for the episode titled "3". Everyone involved with that one should have a contract hit out on them right now. And parts of the last three seasons were kind of annoying. But the movie was good. I don't know if the story in this one will be the greatest ever told, but I expect the film to be put together pretty well.

Exactly. I agree completely. I didn't pay much attention to the last few seasons of X-Files, so I'm really basing it on its prime. But for the New York Actor clown to come here and claim to be some kind of expert in every thread he goes into and then to turn and bash the craft of Chris Carter and the other folks involved in creating the X-Files is a bit amusing. Seriously, very few shows and show-writers/creators share the kind of universal critical acclaim that the X-Files and Carter earned during their prime seasons. It's a sci-fi cult hit that was nominated for all kinds of stuff year in and year out. As you say, it's simply well-made, regardless of whether you're into the content or not.

I've often been surprised about the heat that the show took in the last few seasons. Robert Patrick did a damn fine job considering. A couple of his episodes are at the top of my list for the entire series. The episode where he finally finds out who killed his son was nothing short of spectacular. It was as good an hour of television as any I've seen.

Personally, I've always been a bigger fan of Millennium. I think that was Carter's best work. However, I still find myself watching X-Files reruns on The Sci-Fi Channel or TNT when I'm up late at night. It was a damn good show - period.

As for the movie, I definitely going to see it. I'm pretty excited about it.

I liked Robert Patrick's performance a lot as well, except I kept waiting for him to ask someone, "Excuse me, do you know John Connor?". If they would have done it just once, that would have been spectacular.

There's two short clips up on yahoo.com. They aren't too spoiler-y or anything, but they look pretty solid. As I've said, these guys are good at their craft, and I trust them to create good stuff.

[spoil]One interesting note was the reference to Samantha in one of the clips, I'm banking on that being just a metaphorical reference on Scully's part, I'm not taking it literally, but it makes sense for them to go back to that theme and that aspect of Mulder's character given the nature of the story.[/spoil]

I don't trust reviewers, I think it was going to get bad reviews no matter what. People want to bash it because it came out of no where years after the show ended. Now, it very well may be one huge lump of poo, but I loved the show and will give it a fair shot and keep an open mind.

Saw it and had very mixed feelings about it.

Walking out of the theater, I was in complete shock about how underwhelming the horror/thriller aspect of it was. That part of the film truly did not stand up to the standard Carter set. There was no strong antagonist and we never really learn the bad guys' motives - or we do, but the story is largely left untold, the women who were being taken were not developed and we had no strong attachment to them, the new FBI characters were pretty flat and 2D. Truly, I was in shock - having just rewatched the first 5 seasons of X-Files, I can say that for them (Carter/Spotnitz) to make these kind of fundamental mistakes is incredibly rare. Normally, they are pro's when it comes to this stuff - and they churned out standalone episodes that would have been great on the big screen and made truly great films (Clyde Bruckman, Beyond the Sea, Corpohages, Bad Blood, etc., etc)

However, on the plus side, as a character drama, it was quite good - and it raised interesting and complicated questions about religion, science, faith and tied them back to the characters. They did Mulder and Scully justice - and didn't just bring them back for shyts and gigs - they advanced the characters and really treated them in a satisfying manner.

Honestly, if they had just spent another ten minutes developing the thriller aspect, it would've been a really great film. Or if they had spent ten less minutes on the thriller plot, and just acknowledged that the horror backdrop was just a vehicle for a strong character drama with well-developed themes, it would've been a really great film. As it is, its film thats both plodding and unremarkable and thought-provoking and moving.

Bottom Line: If you're an X-Files fan, see it. If not, probably don't bother.
