Was there a reason why this episode wasn't aired last week? I'd assume this Friday would be no episode since it is Halloween weekend.

Great episode. I assume there won't be anymore breaks for this arc?

So what are your thoughts about Anakin being called back? I think Palpatine had to make a crucial decision here to set a trap for the Republic. But why?

In addition to presence of Krell - from the episode title (Darkness On Umbara) and future titles (see below) this arc possibly incorporates elements from Apocalypse Now - Heart Of Darkness.

Speculation: Palpatine recalls Anakin, sending in the rogue Krell - of which either Anakin or Clones have to eventually take out.

Episode S0408 • The General • November 4 2011
Episode S0409 • Plan Of Dissent • November 11 2011
Episode S0410 • Carnage Of Krell • November 18 2011

Episode S0411 • Kidnapped • November 25 2011
Episode S0412 • Slaves Of The Republic • December 2 2011

I just have a feeling that Anakin was ordered to return to Coruscant and to be replaced by Krell, so that he will lean more towards the dark side.

Krell's military tactics is reckless, even though he considered himself "by the book", but charging into suicide is not exactly a good tactic, despite what Krell thought. Krell reminds me a lot of how the Russian military fought during WWII, which was throw large numbers and overwhelm the German military.

With Krell's questionable leadership and tactics, I think Palpatine knew that there would be chances of Krell leading to the death of Rex, Hardcase, and the other clones. Like Krell said, if they fail their mission, then the burden would be on the shoulders of Obi-wan and the clone forces on Umbara.

Episode 8: The General - preview:

[flash width=640 height=385]http://www.youtube.com/v/Dc6lS7pXy9o?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1[/flash]

Description:

General Krell orders Captain Rex and the clone troopers of the 501st Legion to conquer a heavily fortified Umbaran airbase, and will not accept anything less than victory. It is an almost certain suicide mission, unless the clones can use their ingenuity to defeat their new enemy.

I find it interesting that Krell is depicted as such a Master Asshole. Perhaps he and Sidious are in cahoots?

Krell came off more like Patton to me (if Patton were a more ignorant tactician). I thought it was a very good episode but Krell's attitude, tactics and overall character is very, very uncharacteristic of a Jedi. So much so that the episode's credibility as a well-told narrative depends on his character arc.

Unless this dude turns out to be some kind of impostor or under the influence of Sidious, it's a major writing flaw. I understand he was kind of redeemed at the end when Rex spoke up, but that doesn't excuse his lack of compassion and complete ignorance of his surroundings. *Nerd Alert* This guy would never have passed the trials let alone become a Jedi Master.

This episode does illustrate how hamstrung the Jedi are as characters. They all have to be prim and proper to stay believable. None of them can really be "edgy" or "unique" without the assumption that they must be bad or leaning towards the dark side (i.e. Voss, now Krell).

I agree that Patton and the arrogance quote are the starting points for the character. I’m going to guess that Pong is soon to be offed by the 501st. This would foreshadow order 66 and take the clones in a darker direction. Prior to the start of the season, Filoni stated that “Rex doesn't like what the clones are turning into." So, if there is a mutiny, I wonder if he’ll side with his men or not?

Seeing the 501st clones actually killing Krell would be pretty cool, but I don't see it happening.

I think the whole Rex not liking what his brothers are turning into doesn't have to be his fellow 501st troopers turning on Krell, but maybe some of the clones have the thought of doing it?

I mean, Rex already sounds, acts, and even looked different in this season than in the past. He looks and sounds exhausted, whether he has been fighting nonstop or he is just plain tired of the war. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a flashback of a not-on-screen conversation with Cut back in that one episode and he's been thinking about it since.
