And some of us are composers because of the original Star Wars score. But if you think I'm going to post my review of the score on this board you're freaking high. I'm not that masochistic. I just like reading the posts where people say they are moved to tears... that's the shit that makes me write music in the first place. I don't care if it's JW or Queen Latifah.. if a piece of music makes that much of an impact in your life, I'm for it.

I have been listening to the soundtrack all day. I admit I was a little worried with the Grievous speaks to sidious track because of familiartity to harry potter. But of course that fear washed right away, listening to teh whole soundtrack as a whole it is just amazing. I love battle of the heroes, it just has such a nice sound to it. I cant wait to see the video that they come up with for us on that dvd for battle of the heroes.

I am just really pleased with the whole thing. Williams did a wonderful job. The end credits really take me back.


I also noticed something - this is the track listing at bestbuy.com why is it different? like "I am the Senate" or "Reunion of Anakin and Padme". Is this just an old listing?

Well coming from a number 3 kind of fan...

This soundtrack gives me quite a renewed hope. This movie has the potential to be very, very good. From where I stand, everything is in its right place. (But this from someone who liked TPM over AOTC).

It just seems like the conversation is degenerating into a cluster fuck comparisons to Harry Potter, Matrix, and LOTR are just plain dumb.

If anything the Matrix Revolutions sounded more like Duel of the Fates especially since the Sanskrit choir was used in TPM long before Matrix. They are rip offs here.

But the real silly thing is that they are all good scores, although some better than others. Why does Star Wars have to be the BEST or WORST of anything?

As far as the soundtrack goes I only have a problem with the end credits I think the ending (the closeout of the Throne Room and on) just keeps regurgitating over and over I love the reprise of ANH's themes and finale but it just goes on for way too long. The repeats just are a bit much.

And on the subject of repeats Lucas has been doing it forever. ROTJ saw a repeat of the Trench Run during the Sail Barge battle. Granted the cuts and edits in the two previous films were terrible If I hear that Escape from Naboo/Podrace Lap Three/Arena Battle cue one more time I'll vomit). But the Binary Sunset and Clash of the Lightsabers is very nice (And there are subtle differences to each just like the cue mentioned in ROTJ)

Well that is my two cents after reading and listening all day.

I could be wrong and be surprised when the movie comes out, but two tracks don't seem to match up. Isn't the "Immolation Scene" supposed to be when Anakin is burning and Obi-Wan is screaming "you were the chosen one!"? That music doesn't seem to match that scene. And "Grievous Speaks to Lord Sidious" sounds like it belongs to a sentimental scene. I figure a scene where Grievous is speaking to Lord Sidious would be dark and mysterious.

Who prefers BOTH before DOTF?? I do as a matter of fact...

Battle Of The Heroes to me is like the evolution of Duel Of The Fates, containing elements of it as well as Across The Stars. I'm currently working on a piano reduction of it and I'm doing quite well.

I didn't mind the Imperial March being included in the Duel. I mean, it's completely associated with Vader and that's exactly who he is at the time. The Obi-Wan versus Anakin track is very disjointed and that makes it work even more to me.

But my current favourite tracks are Palpatine's Teachings, with its great use of Bhuddist chant and surprising lack of the actual Emperor's Theme, and Anakin's Dark Deeds. To me, Anakin's Dark Deeds is the best track on the whole thing.

I liked battle of the heroes from the start. It's got that epic feel to it, but I don't think it surpasses duel of the fates.

Are they going to release a video for BOTH, like they did for DOTF and the love theme? Just hit me on the head if this information is already known. It's just that they usually start editing and hyping a tv music video around this time for every starwars release.

If so then I can't wait. I thought the video for Love across the stars was pretty weak IMO, but the video for DOTF was fantastic.

I'd just like to weigh in and send a big "thank you!" to MF and company for the music, the spoilers, and the whole shebang! Appreciate it a bunch!

My 2 cents worth on the score: Loved it! Can't wait to hear it in the theater.

I like BOTH 10 million times better than DOTF, and then some. I love TPM, but DOTF is the one thing I was never too happy about. It's good in the sense that it's very recognizable, and it has a couple of clever things, but it doesn't use it's full potential at all. What makes BOTH so great is that it not only has a great recognizable main theme, but it has many great things going on in the background that makes it "come alive", it's got just about exactly 10 tons more depth than DOTF. It's also much more in the style of old Williams. I'm *very* happy about it!

Anakin Vs Obi Wan is a faster/more intense version (but also less grandous) version of BOTH, with the Imperial March (particularly from the Bespin Duel) cutting in from time to time.
I like the faster pacing.

Battle of the Heroes was alright. Though nowhere near the level of Duel of the Fates. The song had the fight fill, it got you pumped, but nowhere near enough for an epic duel. I was expecting a grill in your face brass pumping choral piece and was left with a rather medium intensity quick march style fight song. It was alright, but nowhere near the caliber of Duel of the Fates, or anything by Hans Zimmer. Hans always was better than Williams in that sense.

However, the album is such a departure from the norm for starwars that I actually enjoyed some of the tracks on the album more so than I do other classical pieces I listen to. I'd especially have to say bravo on the "Padme's Ruminitions" (spelled wrong i'm sure), "General Grievous", and "Sidious' Teachings".

The album was good, best one out of all of them. But Battle of the Heroes to me was a disappointment. But then again, perhaps the main focus of the obi duel won't be the pumpingness of a very dark and loud brass piece, but having something softer to allow more focus on word exchange and other aspects of character interaction that would be blotted out by too much noise.

The most epic part of BoTH is the same part we heard in the Tragedy commercial, and much to my dismay, that seems like a small portion of the track. That aside, it's a great piece. I'm all for any Vader like music getting played in The Duel, makes perfect sense to me.

Seriously, however, after listening to it I came to the conclusion that's been mentioned by a number of others: the score sounds rather like a "John Williams Anthology" CD than a standalone Star Wars score. There are cues and themes from everything, from Amazing Stories and Poseidon, to Hook, Indiana Jones and even - ugh - Hairy Pooper. Not to mention the unusal amount of material taken straight from Ep. Ep. IV-VI... Much of it sounded like a score that I would expect from Jimmy "Xerocopier" Horner, or all the Hans Zimmer clones from Media Hackventures (all right, definitely not that low, but all these Gregson Badelt Jablonskies are the proverbial examples of self-copying...) than from Williams...

Still, it's John Williams - ergo, it's good. But it's well below most of his scores, including all other Star Wars ones (except for the bland "Clones", of course). A fine score, but not a remarkable one.

Hopefully the actual recording sessions will be released, too, officially or not , and will turn out to have more new music missing from this disc, as was the case with the previous entries...

'Grievous And The Droids' sounds like James Horner's Aliens in places because of the way he uses the trumbones
I really love this score

Anakin's Betrayal I think is my favorite piece.... lots of emotion. Just the sheer amount of emotion in the very beginning reminds me of Shindler's List, minus the solos....

This one's clever it sounds like a play on the choral piece from Jedi with Luke n Vader fighting after the ''terwinn sissterr'' scene.

Audacious. (but good )

Call me an idiot (I often am) but I think that is the point. In the novelisation and the audio of said book, there are several lines that make me think that this track is perfect for this duel, while DOTF, which is a more "epic" piece, in your definition of the term (I happen to disagree with you here, but I'll go with it for the sake of conversation), is suited for (which we have been told it is played with) the Palps/Yoda duel.

All in all, an excellent soundtrack. It seems a bit short, but quality over quantity. The Force Theme moving into the end credits had me out of my seat and jumping for joy. I've been waiting for that... well, forever.

Excellent soundtrack IMO. Repetition and reuse bothers me not as long as they're good things to repeat/reuse.

I work for a music distribution company and that is the listing I got on the one-sheet from the record label, the same as on bestbuy.com.

Well, there is only room for so much on one cd so that may have something to do with it. Also, the music for these scenes could be intertwined in what's already on the soundtrack. Another possibility is that the re-release a special edition of the soundtrack as a double cd set with all the music in order according to the movie (which is what I prefer because some of this soundtrack is confusing. LOL)

Yeah! And that music doesn't seem to go with "Grievous Speaks With Sidious". I think there was a mistake in linking the music online and titling the tracks. That music sounds more like something between Anakin and Padme. The music is too soft and sentimental. Same with the "Immolation Scene". I think some of these tracks don't match up with their titles.

This soundtrack is definitely unique. I hear hints of Terminator music; Spiderman music; Batman music. It's definitely interesting.

I'm puzzled by the inclusion of the Throne Room theme in the end credits. I guess Williams is celebrating the conclusion of the saga, but it doesn't seem to fit in. Plus there are some awkward transitions in there. Overall, though definitely a winner.

I love the end of "Anakin's Dark Deeds". It sort of has the feeling of "Ah shit, what just happened?"

There's a really interesting turn at the 1:33 mark which I'm curious about. The progression is suddenly ennobling for just a couple of beats which can't be random... Williams is most likely putting an emphasis on a piece of dialogue which is particularly ironic or otherwise conspicuously meaningful.

Someone here mentioned that Immolation Scene doesn't fit right - I think it's perfect, immolation is sacrifice (usually by fire), and the music seems to fit with the tragedy of Anakin's demise and Vader's rise. To me at least.

I can't wait to see what this underscores... I can easily picture a slow-motion scene of him burning and the requisite close-ups on his face... that sort of thing. Similarly, the emperor rescuing him and the uncertainty of his survival seems to fit, imagery-wise, as well. The ending of the cue is interestingly fragile (mortal?) and tragic. I love the presence of delicate flutes in the orchestration of a cue featuring such harsh, graphic images.

P.S. Just a further thought on this: I hope the presentation of the emperor rescuing Anakin in this scene leans towards the compassionate - albeit twisted - father-figure dynamic, rather than just another self-serving bit of manipulation on Palpatine's part. The idea that there is any compassion in Palpatine would add a level of depth to the character that would make him irresistably cool in my opinion (versus a two-dimensional, "bad guy" caricature). We'll see.

I believe this is the scene where Lucas said the Emperor will display any sort of compassion in any of the movies. He put's his hand on Anakin's forehead because he does actually care about Anakin or so Lucas says. I know I saw it on the internet somewhere, and I believe it was in my making of book. Now the question is will Lucas actually get that across on screen. I find that often times he has all this meaning he discusses that he has in his head but you never really see it in the movies that supposedly contain it...

I hope it is all over the immolation scene track as well. Sounds like it could work.
