Well i enjoyed the Smith trailer, but the only tv spot that doesnt tickle my fancy (Dark side Unleashed) channel ten loves, and seems to play every add brake

I think it is slightly better than the DVD upscaled, but you really have to look.

I think they were trying to say it could have been better if C10 had the right equipment like Channel 9 who have a good record of broadcasting HD movies.

The issue was it was a 24fps HD movie, whereas Australia with PAL need 25fps.

Agreed. Don't they have to compress the last shot or something in the movie so Anakin/Padme and Threepio/Artoo all fit?

Oh I agree entirely - it was really good quality.

The problem was it could have been better. I was very happy with it, but when you see a HD movie in proper 1080i at 50hz at 25fps as Channel 9 have broadcast in the past, you will notice an even better improvement.

It'll be interesting to see if FOX airs the flick in its full widescreen ratio on Sunday; if they do, wouldn't it mark the first time "Clones" has aired on TV in HD in its OAR?

I doubt they would do that. Fox wouldn't show a movie with those pesky black bars at the top and bottom of the screen if they had to.

Those pesky black bars (I think they're more accurately called "unused space" by some) are what I was referring to when I said, "full widescreen ratio." The black bars help to maintain the scope of the image (2.35:1) when viewed on a widescreen T.V. set, which has a ratio of 1.78:1.

The way you described the process of letterboxing for a television format in your initial post, ("those pesky black bars") I'd never guess you were being sarcastic in your second, but hey, that's internet wit for you.

On a side (yet far more pertinent) note, I noticed that while my system renders the audio quite nicely, the picture itself is not as sharp as I remember the HBO broadcast being and I have to wonder if Fox is going back to their old practice of broadcasting widescreen content in 480p. I have no way of truely knowing as my set reads every DTV signal as 1080i.
