Hey, now that's not fair... that Blue elephant was a terrible design. It woulda looked just as bad CG ;)

right back at ya...

I'm sorry, but if you think Gollum wasn't better animation than Yoda, we have nothing more to discuss its clear we have very different tastes.

I think - and this goes for both films - that they did have some very good FX, but the bad shots out-weigh the good.

I always love it when people complain about CG shots like the space battle, then they go watch the countless crappy looking space shots in the OT and don't complain at all.

You're actually watching the space battle from a TV screen. So you can't judge from that. What I can tell, it looked great. But then I never had any doubt about ILM's effects work.

My only concerns from day one were Grievous walking style and his continual coughing. My other concern was why Lucas decided to give all the droids these silly, speedy gonzales voices.

I'll eat my words if it turns out that this battle is indeed the greatest CG to grace cinema screens and is absolutely flawless. and you can bash me to a pulp as I'm sure you will

Yeah, I've also always been worried about Greivous's walk, and those vulture droid noises really did sound bizzare...

Its bs. Where can you see 'bad' shots? This shit looks a million times better then the weak lil space fight in TPM. Maybe the shots in ROTJ look a bit less cgi cause they used models but it still looks awesome.

I mean judge it after u see it on the big screen. Even then its not like im gonna sit there and say "ok lets pinpoint the bad shots"...i mean even if they are a few weak ones, who the fuck cares?

obviously, I care... and I know I'm one of the only ones who does but I don;t give a shit.

and yes, this battle does look a million times better than the TPM one and ROTJ does look less CGI because they used models and that's my whole point!

I have no doubt that this Battle will blow me away just by the logistics of it and the sheer scale!

All I said was that the CG looks less than encouraging... but I have been asked not to debate this here... so I wont.

I have no doubt about that, what I'm saying is that at this stage the technology is not quite there... that;s the last I will say on the matter unti lafter I see the film :)

Lucas said about CG complains in some audio dvd commentary that it's not faker than before when they used mechanicals fx.. nothing is real so... you have to use your imagination to finish the shot :P

What I saw for now seems perfect to me .. but it's just me :chewbacca: :D

Whoever implied that it would be the best CG to ever grace the screen? Now you're just being ridiculous. There's absolutely no doubt it will be great CG and miniature work. I've seen the stills, I saw the short clip of the space battle, and I've seen the trailers. It looks spectacular. Besides, even if it was, there's not a chance in hell that you would admit it.

And I'll say it once again. This space battle has quite a bit of miniatures. Each of the prequel trilogy films have more miniatures than the original trilogy combined.

OK first of all, I think you took my comment the wrong way.... I have no doubt it will be great CG work. My point is that CG technology is not up to scratch yet.

OK? Just to be clear: I think the battle will be amazing!

And as for the miniatures thing, I really don't care how the shots were created it's how the finished product looks, and if it looks too CG to me I'm gonna say so.

Now that's all... I'm leaving this thread now

I know I said I wasn't going to come in here anymore but I think you guys'll appreciate this:

http://s22.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2KGP ... Q99M30NAF8

much better quality than the first one I downloaded... from Sen @ KMC forums. (edit: it's just the new footage 1:45)

Get it while it's hot and please re-upload... I'm not doing it again, it took me forever to upload...

and a translation from nplu1 @ TFN:

The German Hilmar Koch has been working at ILM for 7 years. In Episode 3 he's been responsible for [the creation] of the sinkhole. 2 years worth of work are in that sequence, which take place on Utapau.

Hilmar: This is the world that the model shop people created. It's looks relatively small on this screen, but it was a cube with a length of almost 8 meters, one built with a ratio of 1:2000, one of 90:1. And in the case of the 2000 model we took thousands of pictures, which represent only tiny segments of this sinkhole, which you see here. And we projected all those images on a computer model in order to be able to fly through freely.

Narrator: Once the render/computation is done the model allows for any camera move. Product of a tedious process... (fades out).

GWL: No, we'll develop these.

Narrator: The end result: General Grievous. Loose translation: General [german word for Grievous]. You might think of a vulture walk, and the skeleton like head of a [hammes? No idea what he said here...]. Everything evil, very evil.

Hilmar: This is the first shot where you can see Grievous and he's leaving his first impression on the audience. In this shot the whole background is completely fake, or almost completely fake. It's a set which has been filmed/photographed in Sidney and then brought over to the computer. Right now there is only 3D data, where you can move the camera freely. It doesn't look like much because the photographs/textures are missing. Tons of pictures will be projected on it and at the end you have a world where the camera can fly throught it and the director can do whatever he wants to with it.

Interviewer: Can you show us what is real at the end in this shot?

Hilmar: Uhm, nothing.

Interviewer: This means when George Lucas directs, how does he direct? Just on the computer with supervisors?

Hilmar: In Sidney, when George Lucas makes a movie... (fade out).

Narrator: The fanfare of Oscar-winner John Williams. For Matthew Wood is just one of many segments.

Wood (hard to hear over the German, but you English guys might understand it better when you hear it): Sound is really important to the Star Wars movies. There is so much that has been created by ILM that doesn't exist. So we actually have to create the same amount of material and sounds. For instance the beginning opens with an enormous space battle... we have to create it... So we can watch the beginning of the movie... uhm... space battle as they come in and establish the space for the movie. Uhm, and we'll just watch that now.

Narrator: hardcore Star Wars fans will appreciate the exclusivness (?) of those images. Interesting for mere mortals at least is the difference between the final mix and the sound effects in their raw form, without music.
Similarites with video games can't be denied. Whereas in this case 2 years of work are put into it. It's worth it. The sound department of Lucas' empire alone received 14 Oscars during the last 28 years.

Wood (same problems here): Basically you start with the dialogue ... dialogue... and then the order in which it comes to the soundtrack you have dialogue, then you have your sound effects, then you have your music. So that's how... in the order in which I'll add them as you go through the scene.
Add sound effects... and finally our music.

Well i dont think anything will match the silly, corny, crappy shit called jarjar.

So if Grevious walks like a chicken and caughs like he has a cold, it couldve been worse...i think that walk makes him more sneaky...i dunno what else to call it...

and yeah, haha, i still remember everyones look on their faces when the droids started talking in EP1 like something out of cartoon network...

"roger roger"

lol.

Just watched it. Man the OSB sure is pretty. :) It is slower than I expected. Seems like it will focus entirely on Obi and Anakin, rather than random exploding shots and flashes then return to main characters like the Battle of Endor.

I've still got goosebumps from seeing that OSB footage. Seeing the way Ani and Obi's fighters just scrape past the battlecruisers with pure ease, along with the 'gear shift' change in pitch of starfighter engine noise, as they soar past the camera gets me every time.

The GG footage of him stalking through the IH's bridge is really well lit and animated.

I actually like the jawa-esque voices coming from the Vulture Droids. Random funny noises is very much a Star Wars thing.

Beautiful work from ILM again. Thanks to everyone who's posted links to the footage. :)

The Super Battle Droids speaking didn't work for me. The Vulture Droids did. On first viewing they didn't but after I watched the clip a few times, it worked. The Super Battle Droids haven't grown on me however.

Obi Wan talking about Anakin:

I’m surprised no one has mentioned that the opening cue for the movie seems to have the same music as the opening cue in the soundtrack (braces for flames and :gb2tfn:). Weren’t some of the cats (or insiders) expecting the opening cue for the soundtrack to turn up much later in the film ala Attack of the Clones. I think this bodes well for a score that is not butchered.

He's still coughing because he just got back from the surface of Coruscant... his lungs were literally JUST crushed like an hour before the movie started... if that.

And I guess you guys were right about the date thing.

The vulture droid sound effects were jawas.

Maybe the sound editor was just fooling around with that sound to show the reporter an example of adding sound effects. You can easily change up sound effects on a big digital board like that.

They were jawas.

George has done some weird stuff... but I don't think he'd make the vulture droids sound like that.
